STATIONS What Cows Did After Monday Bain of Home of the member of the West End Improvement Association are Inclined to give up In despair the efforts to beautify that section of the city Miss Cow will ultimately win the day If her present progress Is continued -and some of the lawns made so beautiful and attractive tmpiovmg them and by the removal of the ft ru es will In the end have the unsightly fences put tank In front of them hreo cows owners unknown or at least no animals were at rested wrought teirible havoc In several front yards Monday It la bud enough to go Into yard and up shrubbery and flowers when the weather Is diy Just affer a long soaking rain of several hours tho condition of a yard over which three cows have trampled can be Imagined The front yard of Phillips was a sight to behold Monday afternoon Mr Phillip removed his fence Just a month ago Since that time he has been compelled to resod his yard partially three different times Tho weather has been dry for mime time and the damage was not so great to tho jard Itself aiinouch it was trying experience to have shrubbery eaten and trampled down almost as fast as planted The end come Monday and Mr Phillips says he will he comp tied to put his fence back unless something is done to enforce elihcr the city or the Stale law Three rows trampled all over his front yard Just about the time a continuous rain of more than twelve hours ceased Every trauk was a hol In the ground not than six Inches anywhere and as ninth as a foot some (daces The yard was absolutely ruined Just at a time of year when nothing can be done to again lx notify It An effort Is being made to have the city stock raider move Into the section over which he Is supposed to watch 1 he city law only applies to the central portion of the city and West Nashville and this official livts on Wharf avenue sumo distance out in South Nashville A score or more of West End properly owners have signed an agreement to subscribe one dollars enrh ft month to psv the house rent of tho cow raider a an Inducement to get him to move to West End A house had been scoured but was late rented to another patty and an eftoi Is now being made to find another somewhere near the center of the section It has been suggested that owners of rows taken up by tbs elty stock raider could also be Indicted under the butte law Tlie city law only provides a penalty of fl 60 per day whereas the State law provides a fine of not less than J25 and makes the owner of the cow liable for damage done A rigid enforcement of the State law would soon cause owners to kep stock within a secure enclosure KILLED OVER A NICKEL Negroes Quarrel at Gallatin and One is Slain GALLATIN Tenn Nov IT-fRpeeial John Burns and Alfred Andrews both eol-ored quarreled hers this kept In sickness for months and years owing false treatment and the use of worthies medicines and we are Inclined to bejeeve that Milton thought of this class of almost dying women when he said "The the overwhelming success of a certain bargain sale of silk Monday morning Monday has been called an off-day by the advertisers whose customers are mostly women Will not take the time to read papers on Monday morning" the merchants have said time and time again to the advertising solicitors "Monday morning Is the bluest of the whole wek with housekeepers It Is no good to fill up space on that day" One Summer street firm thought differently For years It has followed the policy laid down by the senior member of the house of not advertising on Sunday Monday morning however It advertised a bargain sale of silks to begin at 8 o'clock only a few hours after even the most energetic early rising housekeeper could possibly have had the paper In lu-r haids Did women see the advertisement? The sale from that bargain rounter proved that they did At 8 o'clock when the sale began over fifty women were walling their turn to make choice of the silks At 815 only a few pieces of the 2J-cent lot remained and at 9 every one had been sold At the 49-cent counter the reduction of stock was almost ns great and the 98-cent lot was over half sold The scene was an exciting one As fast as one woman was served another was clamoring for the attention of the clerk and the rush went on Many customers bought as many as five waist patterns realizing such bargains might not again be had before 'whey had had time to wear out twice that many silk waists A number of the regular customers of the house telephoned to different Cierks asking that they would lay aside for them "anything that would be suitablV" until they had time to get to the store to claim It and In every case the promise was made to accept an choice of color or texture the clerk might select While It was a good-natured crowd in the main It was also strictly business like and If one woman hesitated too long over the merits or the becomlng-ness of a certain shade another standing by would say quickly: "If you want It I do" and she whuld quietly pass her money to the clerk and the sale was made Some men weretin the crowd sent by busy wives who could not leave home so early There were other women who did not realize thil value of time and strolled In after 12 and strolled out again amazed to find the bargains gone The well sustained reputation of the house for fine goods and fair dealing doubtless had much to do with the eagerness of the customers to seize upon any bargains It had to offer As it buys only the highest grade of goods Its bargains could not fall to deserve the name All day the crowd came through the store It as and went estimated that fully three hundred women came in the morning rush In the afternoon a few pieces of the 49-cent silk re left and not quite as many of the Ox-tent lot but It was evident not a yard of either would remain when the- doors were closed for the night Hundreds and hundreds of yards of silk were disposed of some that went for 27 cents being of the richest texture and coloring and originally sold for five or six times as much All of them were the fresh goods of this season and no one went away disappointed except those who come too late As a test of thq value of Judicious advertising It was one of the quickest successes on record As pi oof of the fact that women do read Monday paper It was equally emphatic Mrs Joseph Warner will cnttrCiin a few friends at luncheon to-div in compliment to Mrs Archil) ild Morjorihanks Chrysanthemums will he used In d-to-Tatlng tho reception-rooms and halls and in the dining-room a scheme of pink wdll be attrar lively carried out The polished table will hive covers of C'luny lace and a centerpiece of La France res A menu of numerous courses will he served at which the color nlan of pink will be cartied out as far as possible Miss Mary Neal was the hostess of tv progressive dinner party Monday in honor of Miss Muy Webb nnd her guests Miss Anna Blaine and Miss Louise Arnes which was one of the handsomest aff lira of Its class given this season The decorations were unusually artistic und earned out a scheme of white and green The din-4ng-room had dozens of chrysinthe-murns employed In its adornment banking the buffet and mantel and arranged In clusters agilnst a curtain of green foliage which hung from the doorway The long table had dl'tntond-Shttped pieces of Battenberg lice laid over pale green satin and a crystal vase filled with white chrysanthemums In tho center Single sllvir onridleslhks with white tapers were shaded with gr hi silk and a pale green tlry lamp stood before eaeh date Miniatures of Court beauties were pambd on the pla eards tied with narrow rlbbyns A menu of ten courses was served In which the color plan was observed In the sila Ires and confections Miss Neal wore an
