Charleston April To the intense astonishment of everybody Charleston snatched a victory out of the very jaws of defeat this afternoon The batteries were Voss and Nicholas for Charleston and Widner and Moo-lic for New Orleans The audience was very slim owing to the repeated defeats of the Charleston team and was moreover very much disgusted at the bum playing of the team At the opening of the ninth inning the game stood 6 to 2 in favor of New Orleans When the ninth opened half the audience left the grounds and the Pelicans had packed up their bats and sent them to the depot to be shipped on the train which leit at 615 The weakest batters in the home team were up but strange to say they began the fireworks Two two-baggers two singles and two fatal errors on the part of the visitors netted five runs to Charleston and won the game The Pelicans sent to the depot for their bats unpacked them and went in to win but were retired in one two three order Both clubs left here tonight for Atlanta where they will play an exhibition game to-morrow after which Charleston goes to Memphis and New Orleans to Birmingham It is probable that five men of the Charleston team will be relieved as soon as in 50i's About the first time that I ever remember seeing two horses in one ownership fighting one another in a hard driving finish Fred Fink colt was a good third As filly Laura Storte is robably as good if not bttter than leasing I noted her with interest She is a neat bay not large but chunky built of good length and a fine looker all over A white heel is the only distinguished mark she has There was a great deal of feeling manifested between her party and the Blessing party and by an arrangement with Milton Young each trainer gets half of any stake they may win Long Chance Concerning compact and built on sturdy lines this son of Longfellow is a real good-looker and from the character of his work here is likely to beat more than will beat him in the Derby Last Wednesday he showed a mile and a quarter here in the rattling good time of 2:13 last mile in 1:45 last quarter in 1 have this from un doubted authority and have since had it-oonfirmed by three other parties and the weight carried in this run was 115 lbs This is racing form right now and if the colt stands this treatment and the rest he is sure to get in his present stable and retrograde under it run a good race in the
