hostili ty of the Indians they readied the French Lick (Nash- ville) about 17tf5 As the country gradually opened the families separated and settled in Rutherford and Williamson counties where many of their descendants now live (The cabin built of cedar logs which was completed for one of the fan-illes on the 1st of March 179R still stands on Spencer's creek two miles north of town in a good state of preservation to this day) Isabella MeEwen the mother settled with some of her children in Rutherford and died there about 1820 In the meantime the father and mother of Isabella died in Scotland after making their will disinheriting their daughter and giving to David their unmarried and only son their entire estate David McEwen never married but kept up and extended his father's business at Edinburgh He died about 1810 after making his will in favor of his sister Isabella and her heirs in whatever part of the world they might be found His estate was supposed to be worth about three million pounds sterling The sister living in the backwoods of America never heard of her brother's will although publication was made in English papers somewhere between 1812 and 1816 for the claimants to come forward and enter their appearance Some efforts were ma he by some of the heirs after the war of 1812 at different times to secure the estate but no vigorous or effective steps were taken until recently Parties have reeen fly visited Scotland found and read David's will and found the old mill still in operation the rentals of which have been paid to the Government for over sixty years It is supposed the Government has in default of heirs held this large estate in trust during this time but an act of Parliament was passed in 1850 providing that all claims to estates in Great Britain should be barred after Dee 31 1880 Several meetings of the heirs have been held legal evidence of marriages deaths localities etc has been secured in North Carolina and elsewhere in this country and powers of attorney executed and Campbell Esq of this place and Dr Stanford of West Tennessee will leave for the old country on the 13th inst to prosecute the claim of the heirs Everyone refuses to divide time with any opposing speaker I shall do so in a courteous manner having due regard for the feelings and for the (Pinions of those who differ with me I shall however at the same time speak the truth freely and plainly Some of the so-called philosophical and historical reflections put forth by that candidate I will show to be without foundation in reason and without any support from history GOVERNING CLASSKS Much was lid by him about the clangers arising from the "governiog classes" and the assertion was made that the encroachments upon the liberties of the people are and always have been made by the Legislative department of the Government This is neither true in point of fact nor sustained by sound reasoning A mail who talks about "I ioverning Classes" in this country shows that he knows not about the American system of govermnent and is entirely ignorant of the simplest facts of English and American historv In monarchies there are "Governing Classes" In such countries some are born to rule some occupy positioris by virtue of their birth and of their families whiliPothers equally as good and as wise are deprived cf these privilegen because unfortunately for themselves they belong to what are termed the lower orders the commonality Men there now occupy the mociety manv of them that their aneestors have copied for centuries Such however is not theca-se in this Republican government There are no "governing PhiSSes" We are all equals we are all sovereigns we all constitute the ngoverning classes" The men who fill the offices are our representatives our public servants dependent for their pesitions upon Our pleasure A breath can make thent and a breath destroy How ridiculous then for a man to be talking aismt "govern-toll: classes" endangering the liberties of the people Such remarks show an utter ignorance of our system of government and of the character of our people-But who are the men alluded to as the "governing clasmes?" Thomas Jefferson who was said to be the apostle of liberty and the fattier of the Democratic party was in office longer than any man of his time He Was in the Continental Congress Minister to France Secretary of State during Washington's ad- ministration Vice President and for eight years l'resident of the United States Andrew Jackson was another one of the "governing classes" against W110111 we are warned He was Circuit and Supreme Court judge in Tennessee Senator in Congress General in the army and afterwards eight years President of the Thomas II Benton another of the so-called "governing classes" was thirty yearsomtinuously in the United States Senate besides tilling other offices Jaynes Polk from the Dine that he was Clerk to the house of Representatives of the Tennessee Legislature which met in Murfreesboro up to the end of his Presidential term was continuously in with the exception of four years I could mention hosts of others whom the people have trusted anti honored but who are now to be derided as belonging to the "governing classes" Bow ridiculous! Have we lost our reason? -Have we no conception of the true character of our Government? THERE ARE NO roon CiASSES IN TENNEmEtc The attempt to array one portion of the community terainst another portion because some are called poor and some are called rich is one of the worst signs of the littlea Really there are no poor classes in this country The poor of to-day may be and often are the rich of to-morrow whilst the children of the rich and the rich themselves often become poor Property is constantly changing hands None need despair Rini none need be elated because of their apparent good fort tine The attempt td'excite one portion of the esinmunity against another portion because of a difference in timir pecuniary condition indicates anything but a clear head and a noble heart DANGERS OF COMMUNISM No doctrines are more dangerous than cotmuunistie duet rifles Communism necessitrilv anti inevitably leads to despotism 'there is no danger of communism here Its advocates are too weak in intellect arid too feeble in in and our people are too sensible and too conservative for such doctrines to flourish anti to take deep hold There are no Dantons no Robespierres no Marats in intellect here and no mercurial Freneh people to be influenced by their passionate appeals It is
