probably aware yesterday was the one hundred and third anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of the Independence which made the American Colonies free Now and then throughout the day some evidence of its being a national holiday could be heard in the shape of the firing of crackers blank cartridges etc but this was confined principally to the small boy whom a wholesome mpect for the police kept from celebrating the day in his usual reckless and uproarious manner Business houses as a rule were closed ermpt in the forenoon Here and there could also be seen a flag floating from public and private buildings The moat conspicuous of these wss a large flag suspended from a rope ertending across Cherry street at the postoffice The banks and other puolic buildings were closed Picnica were the order of the day rim A AT BROWN'S The members and friends of thevarions lodges of the Ancient Order of United Workmen In Nashville and Edgefield spent the day in Brown's beautiful grove three-quarters of a mile beyond the terminus of the Edgefield street railroad Here the committee consisting of Messrs 1 Barnes Doyle and Auten bad placed at the disposition of those in attendance every variety of amusement cakulated to entertain the young and the old From 8 o'clock in the morning until 6 in the evening the grounds presented a lovely scene Near the centre of the grounds a stand had been erected and Bush's string band atationed upon it Surrounding the whole was a dancing ground which was occupied by merry couples throughout the day The management had also prepared a literary programme and some disappointment was expressed at the non-attendance of some who prom sed to take part At 1 i o'clock Robert Caruthers Jr took the stand and to an attentive crowd seven or eight hundred strong made an interesting talk upon the Order its benefits etc By request Mr Theodore Cooley read a choice selection upon "Charity" Music followed after which appropriate to the occasion and to the day Prof Henry Macrery read "Ringing the Bells of Liberty" The utmost good feeling prevailed and everything parsed off as smoothly as could have been desired Taken as a whole it was a complete success and too much credit cannot be awarded the management HOW TR( ODD FELLOWS CgLIHRATED MURFREESBORO AIVM) A Jury Obtained in the Amon Cases-The People Determined lama Justice
