As we expected and intimated on a former occasion, the great mass of fruits of tho season are now becoming ripe, and the tables of the Horticultural Society, on Saturday, were crowded with the numerous and varied contributions of its members. It.is but rarely in the course of one season that a collection like that of Saturday can be got together, embracing fine specimens of so many of the leading classes of frnits, and at the same time so creditable to each class.

Even apples, which are too plain-facad to command much attention, were well represented. We noticed one plate, perhaps American Summer Pearmain, which was very perfect, of fine size, and, withal, very pretty. We noticed many otfier sorts that were good-looking and no doubt very desirable. In pears we noticed Doyenne Boufaock, quite as beautiful as those we referred to on Saturday last. 'Also heautiful samples of Bartlett, Flemish Beauty, St Ghislain, Kirtland, and many others The leading peaches on Saturday, as also on the Sat-' urday before, were Catharine and Leopold, two clings of fine size the former white-fleshed, the latter yellow.

Stump the World, and half a dozen other peaches were'shown, but none so strikingly beau-ful as the foregoing. We noticed very fair specimens of Yellow Egg and Lombard plums. But upon the whqle we thought the character of the BEN J. D. KENNEDY, Gen'l Agent, For the States of aTApnllcaUf as for local agencies Kentucky and Tennessee may be addressed to BENJ.

About I o'clock Saturday' three drunken men got on a Main street car at the Fourth street crossing, and, when called upon for their fare, they refused to pay; and bullied the conductor in the; most offensive manner. They even went so far in their ruffianism as to attempt the ejection of the conductor. He thereupon stopped the car and succeeded in performing the ejecting operation npon the insolent rascals themslves.

After being put off they renewed their insults to the conductor, and ha drew his pistol and attempted to blow them to the moon, or somewhere else; but the pistol wouldn't explode, and the car moved oa. Determined to carry out their threats, two of the unmannerly scamps grasped the handles of the rear platform and ran along after the car for a square or two. The horses were urged into a rapid gait, and the drunken footmen were soon left sprawling in the road. And thus ended their outrageous conduct. IXACGURATIOX OF GOVERNOR JoHX L.

Helm. Gov. Bramlette and his staff and the different State officials will leave Frankfort on a special train at 3S o'clock this afternoon and reach this city at seven o'clock. The distinguished party will be received at the depot by the Mayor and other city officers and escorted to the Willard Hotel, where they will be entertained until their departure for Elizabeth-town. The special train will leave the Louisville and Nashville depot at 8:13 tomorrow morning and arrive at Elizabeth-town at 10 o'clock.

It is probable that an immense crowd of people will go down from thiscity to witness the inaugural, ceremonies. PltESEXTATIOX OF A MaGXIFICHXT SlL" ver Service to Goverxor Bramlette. At-eleven o'clock to-day there will be a presentation of a fine sold silver service to Gov. Thomas E. Bramlette, from the citi-izens of Frankfort, at- tho Capitol Hotel in that place.

Afterwards at 3 o'clock P. M. a procession will form at the hotel to escort Gov. Bramlette to the cars which are to convey him and the members of his staff to this city. We are sincerely glad to note the bestowal of these honors upon our retiring Governor.

No onemorerich-ly deserves them nor will more nobly sustain them. Ax Attempted Rape. A man named John O'Connor, who on a former occasion had been arrested on a charge of rape or attempt at rape, was arrested on Saturday night and confined in jail for a similar attempt on the person of a young girl named Matilda Marley. The couple mentioned had been to a ball near the corner of Crop and Fifteenth streets, and were returning to the girl's home when the dastardly crime was attempted. Her screams attracted the attention of Officers Martz and Antle, and, although O'Connor tried to escape, he was captured, and will be before the City Court this morning for trial.

Goterxor Helm's Coxditiox. Our advices from Elizabethtown yesterday, we regret to say, were to the effect that Governor Helm had suffered a slight relapse Still, it is not feared thas his ailment will assume a really dangerous phase. He is the recipient of the most devoted and judicious nursing and medical attention. It is now understood that, after the administration of the oath of office to the Governor elect, his inaugural address will be read by Col. S.

B. Churchill. Base Bali. Graxd Match. The first game (of a series of three) between the Olympic and Louisville clubs will be played this afternoon at the Cedar Hill grounds between two and six o'clock.

Johnson, who shot and killed Alexander Boss, a steamboat pilot, at Hamilton, Boone county, abont a week ago, was arraigned before Esquires Riley and Black, at Big Bone Meeting-house, in that county, on Thursday, when he waived an examination, aqd, by consent of the Commonwealth's Attorney, was permitted to give bail in the sum of five thousand dollars for his appearance at the next term of the Circuit Court, which commences on Monday, September 9, to answer the charge of murder. James W.

Charles Stater, James R. Johnson, and Lucien Johnson, who were arrested on the charge of being accessories to the murder, underwent an examination before the same Justices, when the following facts in regard to the tragedy were elicited: Alexander Boss and his brother Marion had been on a visit to their grandmother, and were returning to Hamilton, where Alexander intended to get aboard of a steamboat They were both riding on one horse, and, as they passed through a village called Normansville, Alex, shouted "Hurrah for Jeff. Davis," whereupon Lucien Johnson and George Miller, who were sitting on it porch in front of a grocery, commenced throwing iron weights at the Boss brothers. Marion jumped off tho horse and ran down the road toward Hamilton, and Alexander drew a pistol, and, after firing four or five time3 at the parties who were throwing the weights, put spurs to his horse and also retreated in the direction of Hamilton, which is about three-fourths of a mile from Normansville. Thomas B.

Johnson, who did the killing, was in the grocery, it seems, at the time of the shooting above referred to, and when it was over he mounted a horse and rode rapidly to Hamilton, where he found Alexander Boss with a pistol in his hand. He charged Boss with shooting at him, which Boss denied, saying that he only shot at the two men who were throwing weights at him. Johnson then drew his pistol and fired at Boss, killing him almost instantly. The defendants were discharged, the evidence being deemed insufficient to hold them as accessories. Suicidk ix the Country.

A young man named William Romine shot and killed himself late Saturday evening at the residence of his father, John Romine, near the Eight-mile House, on the Shelby-ville turnpike, in this county. The weapon used was a shot-gun. Tho rash act was committed in a freak of insanity, to which the deceased is said to have been subject at intervals. Coroner Moore, on being notified, held an inquest upon the body. Ikqi-est No.

101 Held Saturday evening, August 31, lh'S7, on the Shelbyville turnpike, on the body of Wm. A. Romine, aged 21 years. Verdict of the jury the deceased came to his death from a gunshot wound in the left side, inflicted by his own bands while in a state of mental derangement. SUDDEX DlJATn OF CoLO.VEL JOSEPH Fible.

On Saturday morning last, Col. Joseph Fible, one of the oldest residents of Oldham county, died suddenly and unexpectedly at the houso of his son, CoL John Fible, near Ballardsville, in that county. The deceased retired on Friday night 'in apparent good health, and on Saturday morning he was found dead in his bed. He was upward of ninety years of age. Worthily Bestowed.

S. S. Parker, courteous, efficient, and popular railroad agent, at the corner of Third and Main streets, was presented with a beautiful and costly walking-cane, as a token of high regard, by his numerous railroad friends, Jon Saturday evening. The occasion was eminently felicitous, 1 Pbksojal. It gave us unfeigned pleasure to meet in the city yesterday, Mr.

For the month of August just closed the total mortality was two hnndred and sixty-five, against throe hundred and fifty-five for the same month last year. This shows the health of the city at pres ent to be unexampled. Receptiox op Goterxok Bbasi.ettb asd StriTB.
