H. HUGHES, june 14 No. 6 Com row. Hf A thrive In proportion to our corporeal decay. How rich is the mind then frequently found in its concept ''ons of the power of God, of immortality! Some happy souls ihorc were young young in the noblest Attributes of youth, having only lost iu.tho progress of years, its two great confidence and Its lollies; but retaining the same feelings of tenderness, of generous joy, ol benevolence, of vingleness of heart, and a thirst aftei all those betlci Aiursuils of life, which ate admired in well-disposed youth, and aie not less becoming in age; when the soul is more eager to soar to her nalive home and fears not the grisly band of death, who in vain attempt to affright her in her progress to immortality.

"I can well believe," said 1, "though experience has not yet taught it to me, that in age our longings after immortality become the strongestof our desires, at least in a tiue Chiis-tian. Man is the only creaturo who feels a wish to be immortal; and this wish, however remote it may appear to be, is the great fountain whence flow all Ills hopes and fears. In youth they seem stronger, as more varying passion than at any other period of his being; because their scope is more immediate, the pursuit of present, of tangible things. The hopes and feais of early life are more uncertain than those of age; hence are they more agitating. These feelings in our decay rest all on one point their final destination.

Youth is the lot to be cast, age the lot determined; it has no longer, there fore, the eagerness of one who has to throw for the game. What an anxiety do we witness in some minds respecting futurity! with those who have quick susceptibilities, and melancholy feeling at heart (which, moio or less, evet accompanies the susceptible,) high aims and generous motives; with whom the world is new, how morbidly painful does the obscurity of the future often appear lo such; how eager are they to penetrate into the mysieries of human life, to withdraw the veil, and refer all things to destiny. They are glad to be lid of their own responsibility; and to fancy such events must happen, such circumstances must lead to them, because a conviction of this nature enables them to meet more calmly the evils they cannot but feel evils too often the result of their own ungoverned imaginations and imprudent hopes, that end in disappointments felt with double bitterneess, because they arise from objects that ought never to have been pursued. The fluid came down in the Belfry, passed through the roof in several places and fell upon the cast iron floor of the Rolling Mill. The works were in operation at the time and full of men.

As the fluid reached the floor an explosion took place similar to that of gunpowder and seemed to be scattered in all directions filling the mill with a blaze, and the smell of sulphur. I have therefore been forced to avow that we sometimes meet with things which are above our reason; and not a little repugnant no it. Do not, however; mistake me, for though what I am about to mention borders on superstition, and appears to me as I have already implied, as something beyond the course of nalural events, yet I would not on a solitary instance, however well accredited, build a system of belief that should support the fearful creed of fatality, or afford matter fur the credulous to become yet more imbued with a spiiit of credulity.

My belief is firm in the overruling guidance of a divine Providence. In our least or in ourgreat-est actions, theie is a wheel that never rests: we see the turns of it only, but not the hand that sets in motion the hidden spring. There is a chain in the otdet of events, which, like the laws of nature, works on regularly and orderly, though the one may be seemingly broken by a cross or unexpected accident, and the other disturbed by an unlooked-for tempest the eruption ofa volcano, orany apparent phenomenon. But this in no way affects the whole, no more than a casual cloud, or a dense fog, though it darkens the alter the succession of day and night, and put the first out of place, by introducing the last, contrary to its establshed law. "The divine government of Providence does not interfere with our own responsibility for the motives that give the impulse to our actions.

We make the attempt, and ior that we must answer. God permits it to go forward, to prosper, or to lail, according to his will: sometimes by a leathers weight he can turn our purpose aside, and we have often use to rejoice that though we will, he frustrates; sinje God is magnified in ihe very revolutions of human actions that are frequently commenced on the surest grounds, on the best motives. It has been well remarked bv Sir Thomas Browne, in his Relisrio Me Amongst the many varieties of minerals which abound in this Stale, we now have incontesti-ble evidence of the existence oi gold. We were yesterday shown a lump of nativegold, which was found qu the farm of Mr. Bacon, on the waters of the Merrimac, about 30 miles from this city, in this county.

The lump was turned up where he was ploughing, and was about half the size of a hen's egg. It has been assayed by the gentlemen of the Western Academy of Natural Science, and pronounced to be 17 carats fine. We are told that a number of lumps of the same kind have, at different times, been picked up in that neighborhood, but no one knowing what motnl it was, it has heretofore elicited very little attention. We arc not informed wheliier the indications are such as to justify the expectation that it exists in large quantities. We piesume, from its having been found in seveial places, that there will yet be more important discoveries made.

With regard to the mode of appointing delegates, oi the time when, cr place where, the Convention shall assemble, there is, comparatively, little concern: Neither is it deemed prudent, nor proper, to endanger good feeling in unnecessary, and, as it would be in this case, odious companion of the capability and worth ol candidates.
