Nominations The Washington Spectator says that the nominations of Mr Upshur as Secre tary of State Mr Porter as Secretary of War Mr Henshaw as Secretary of the Navy Mr Nelson as Attorney General and Mr Cushing as Commis sioner to China were transmitted to the Senate ri day morning the 15th Great Robbery No clue had been obtained at the last dates from New York to the whereabouts of the missing trunk Copp arrived in New York on his return in com pany with some of the parties interested in the Housatonic train on riday evening He under went an examination before the Mayor soon alter his arrival which elicited nothing beyond the fact of his extraordinary ami most culpable neglect of the valuables committed to his charge He was still at large Copp was present when the trunk was packed He knew its great value He probably never had charge of one so valuable And yet from the mo ment he received it in charge until he started on his return passage in the Housatonic tram he seemed to have no more care about it or cared whether it reached its destination than if it had been a worth less valise' filled with cast oft rags It is stated indeed that he declined to place it in the care of the captain of the boat whilst he carefully handed over for safe keeping a carpet bag with val ueless contents We understand that the slip where the boat lands in the city of New York has been scraped The trunk may have been thrown over board there or before the boat reached the city af ter the money had been taken out or it inav have been taken ashore on the arrival of the boat Either course was easy enough so far as it was the object of any care by the person to whom it had been com mitted The Troy papers state that the amount of money i sent from that city by Mr Copp on Tuesday has been overestimated the sum not exceeding $3000 The amount of drafts is not stated It is also small probably The cash stolen as far as ascertained amounts to about $45000 'mnamun 5 bovetj ground 1843 Dibble Esq Dear Sir I have just re ceived from you as one of the Secretaries of a pub lic meeting at Detroit in favor of constructing a canal at the Sault Ste Marie the proceedings there of and to which you have been kind enough to in vite my attention as a member of Congress I hear of the arousal of the people upon this subject with great delight and I wonder that our government and people have so long slumbered upon it or the present or the future I know not where $200 000 couldbe more profitably expended than in open ing Lake Superior to ship navigation and making its vast mineral and other resources of as easy trans mission to the commercial cities of this country as the products of Illinois Wisconsin or Michigan Unfortunately however the public have wanted information upon this point which I am pleased to see the proceedings of your meeting give Up to this period altogether too much darkness has pre vailed upon the importance of this project and the very small means requisite to its perfection Let the people understand the value of the Superior country the importance of 480 miles uninterrupted frontier navigation and that a free communication can be had to it all by a canal one and a quarter miles in extent with only three locks of six feet lift each and by an expenditure of only $200000 and they will soon demand a sufficient appropriation for its immediate construction at the hands of their Representatives and in my opinion the only reas on that they have not heretofore made the demand is because they have not been in possession of the requisite information Your meeting must be the means of accomplishing much goodnotaonly from the known respectability of the persons composing it but for the facts it has oot I hoard covoppl of ttlC mCID bers express their commendation of the enterprize who confess that they heretofore had given it no at tention As to myself I have ever been ready to contribute what little influence 1 possess to its fur
