DAILY REE PRESS JOHNSON ANO BRODHEAD EDITORS I 11 I THURSDAY MORKIN'G 1ANUAHY 1 Tr To day Jieing New no paper will lo itwitol from this to morrow Tho Close of the Year Eighteen hundred ynd fifty one has passed away to join the throng of ngew hich have elap sed since the eventful moment when the mor ning stars sang together and the sons of God shouted aloud fur at the advent of Him from whom the calendar of the Christian era in tlm computation of time now dates its birth Marked with tho ordinary vicissitudes and chequered alike witli joy and its careerns thc of its predecessors was to some a season of unalloyed prosperity to others but a thorny pathway a world of gloom and bitterness The good and ill of this life are ever the footprints of sorrow tread dose upon the light step of tho merrymaker tbo iron strands in life web are thickly interwoven with its threads of gold Wisely is it thus ordered by beneficence that our hearts cling not too strongly to the fleeting elements of earthly fdidty and that purified by Htiffiriitg we may be the better fitted for the unspeakable fruition ol the joys awaiting the just made in tho sunlight of the upper world This day is the starling point in eighteen hun dred and fifty two To its unknown wave our barques arc committed voyagers down rapid river laden with the varied experience of tho past ami our hoj and aspirations for the fu ture Cares and anxieties insuperable from hu manity we may not hope entirely to weap' but tempered with merciful dispensations we trust they will but the more endear to us the lllessins which aruuiul vur paths anl our foot The blessed boon of forgetfulness rendering mankind oblivious of the ast for then' better en joyment of the present and the future and custom immemorial have sanctioned the celebration of a new lurtli as a season of merry festivity and the peculiar time for the interchange of kindly greetings between friends neighborsand associates our daily companions in the walks ol life As siieh a season we greet it to day a green spot in the wilderness" which spreads around us its sombre hues born of the corroding influences of interest passion and a gleam of bright ness shining in upon us aJ and lighting up with unwonted radiance the hearts of even the saddest among us Let mirth and gladness rule the hour let the first day of the new year be marked with a whitestone as a memorial of the reinstate ment of old of the renewal ol old friendships of the rekindling of estranged nflec tions a word as an era of universal peace and good will Eor ourselves with grateful recollections of their kindness and support despite our occasional short comings tender to our friends patrons read ers and tho rest of whom together form no inconsiderable portion ol community I our warmest congratulations upon the return ol this pleasant anniversary and our heartfelt wishes that each and all may enjoy many returns of A IJamy New Teak The Late and Present Administration Yesterday closed the Administration of John Bakry as Governor of Michigan The event is worthy" of particular notice Gov Barry was first elected to the office of Governor in IS 11 suc ceeding Gov Woodbridge and meeting on his in duction into otllcc a ruined Treasury and a dis ordered and unsatisfactory administration of the af fairs of the State I lis opponents boasted ot the barren victory which elevated him to the Execu tive chair on the basis of a bankrupt Treasury and a dissatisfied people Gov energies were equal to the task he was called ttjton to fulfil lie assumed the discharge ot his duties ith ail unial tering hand and prudent and careful advice and in every respect an earnest effort ay edjalike by remonstrance or by threats to satisfy every class and section of our infant commonwealth That he had a difficult work on hand it did not require his enemies to infirm him they were intrinsic in the elements he was called iqsin to arrange and systematize Or der was to fie brought out of chaos The works of public improvement ere in an embarrassed and unprofitable condition 1hc tax system embracing an immense quantity of non resident lands was inqici'fcct and onerous the banks which had struggled for existence through a period of unpar alleled pressure lasting for years had exhibited those death struggles hieh are so apt to derange the household and to put in jeopardy even thebenevolent minds who thought by attention to ward oil' the evil of a general dissolution The public debt as large mid the State had upon its hands a serious quarrel with her creditors con cerning the alidity of tho public bonds Com mercial credit had sunken to that low condition in which there was no confidence and scarcely any room to hope for honorable business in the future The State had become a bye word and a reproach in the mouths of her sisters of the Confederacy We do not seek to overdraw the peitnre We might go still further and the resident of Michigan in ISI1 would attest to tho truthfulness of what we might say At that time Gov Barry assumed the direction of the public Administration and he was succeeded four years after bv Gov Kelch and four years ago by Gov Ransom the line of liey pursued by him so far as we know was never changed Two years ago he was aga'n re elected and so complete has been his work as Governor of Michigan in every duty entrusted to his hands that there are literally none to com plain The strange spectacle is witnessed of the entire of the opponents of tho Deimx'ratic party on tho subject of the State Administration and it is a remarkable fact that the otlieers elected to fill tho several places in the Govermucnt are so discharging their duties as leave no twin for individual or public remonstrance Such a triumph ot the wirn of tho Democratic party in the dis charge of the high duties devolving iqsn them in conducting the affairs of a great State great in its production in its commerce and in its position among her sisters of tho Republic finds no par allel in the history of this country and that we are largely indebted for this to the prudence eco and integrity of Gov Barry none vvil)qutH tiou cannot close this notice without referring in terms of commendation to the able and cotir tevus gentlemen who fill the State otlices In lion Taylor the Secretary of State wc find an able earnest and devoted public officer discharging every duty with ability in whom in deed the whole State has that entire confidence which can alone spring from integrity and ability to discharge the duties he has assumed Hon BC Whittemore is the State Treasurer Those who have been brought into contact with Mr 'Whittemore in tho discharge of his public duties heed no assurance of his fitness for theost he iH'ctqvies A more obliging competent and gentlemanly public officer eannot be found in the State nor one who could have commanded at once greater confidence lion John Sweegles lr the Auditor General is acknowledged by all as an indefatigable oflieer in that most laborious and intricate Department Perhaps there is do ollice in the State requiring more untiring industry and more ability than that of Auditor GeneraL That Auditor Gon Swee gles has sb discharged his duties as to leave none to complain is a compliment of no ordinary char acter The office of Commissioner of the Land Office has been ably and most satisfactorily filled by Hon Kibbee and if there are any who question either his fitness or ability for tho dis charge of the duties which devolve upbn hi de partment we have not heard of them Wo have thus presented such officers as are and have been more immediately connected with the Juvernor in conducting the public Administration and we challenge a comparison on the jKirt of any State tn the Union with what has been di tto elsewhere and at our own Capitol Dur Whig friends are prone to complain when they have the least cause they do not complain They have no heart to ask a change in the Administration of the State and tut long as the ability courtesy and impartiality which now chdractcrizes our Administration shall continue sc long will the lemocraey control tho Public offices of Michigan Gov McClelland To day Robert McClelland will lx? inaugurated as Governor of Michigan to commence where Gov Barrv left off the discharge of tho duties of his office Mr McClelland requires no endorsement from the press As a gentleman in all the relations of private life a friend and cotiqumion ill the social circle a faithful vigilant and talented public of ficer he has no superior in the State Mr Mc Clelland enters upon the discharge of public duties possessing the confidence of his State with a career before him of eminent usefulness to our people and honorable to himself he has every inducement to pursue that cautions but liberal course which has retofore distinguished him as a public officer The people of Michigan have tho iwcr to appre ciate and the magnanimity to' reward her faithful public servants Those who perform their duties steadily and firmly determined to answer the pub lic expectations will be remembered by generous constituency Public One of the best evidences of the united energy and public spirit of the people of the city of Grand Rapids is afforded in the liberality with which they have come forward to secure the apprehension ot the wretches depicted on every countenance The arms of wives were instinct ively thrown around their husbands and the arms of modest maidens on this momentous occasion were thrown around the stalwart forms of their gallants perhaps for the first time Some of the gentlemen reciprocated the embrace while others as much frightened as their fair companions sought safety in flilit The ladies not wishing to bo privates per conqaiiy infantry dragoons and riflemen lesjiectively to SI privates in all companies No new regiment has since been added but bv an act approved June 21 1850 (second sec tion) the was authorized to increase the number of privates in each and any of the com panies of the existing regiments of the army at the srrcral posts on the Western frontiers ami at remote and distant stations to any number not exceeding seventy four" Under this provision of law the President June 22 1850 (General order No 20) directed that some 90 companies out of 158 should be car ried up to the new maximum strength of 71 pri vates each If Congress would authorize a' like extension in the remaining O' companies add two to the is of artillery and organize the fifty eonqxanies into live instead of four regiments as at present with a new regiment of mounted riflemen it would give us (which might suffice) a nominal force ol I 33 enlisted men (exclusive of officers) or only 3 1 1G more than the
