Under its influence we instantly lose sight of the darker forms of earth its stern realities sink away and we feel ourselves less of earth and more of heaven it is glorious to cease for a bright moment to be a prisoner ot this sickly body and become as large and pure as nature An ardent love for the beautiful is surely akm to worship for in proportion as we come to a just appreciation of it do we gam exalted news of its author who has dispensed it so liberally But how few are the eyes unsealed to discover this all pervading element Man gazes enrap tured at the mountains of art but never for once sees the greater skill and beauty which is manifest in all the breathing universe around him One of the purest forms of beauty nature is presented us in the flowers They are her mild est sweetest expressions They us like and talk to the heart They are elo quent instructors of morality But like all bless ings so freely enjoyed they are illy appreciated Who would not shudder at the thought of walk ing amidst all the master pieces of painting and sculpture and yet never behold one of them? How many there are who never for once pause to observe these emblems of the lovely and pure which spring up all along our pathway in lite How much flowers resemble the young heart in its bright morning ere it has stained the plu mage of its sinless years 1 radition of them tells us that they were once like youth even in that they loved and talked and had passion like ours Whether the golden age of Howers has passed or not they are still invested with these susceptibilities in song: How often and fondly the poet revels in the field of flowers Do they noftalk to him? Who has ever heard the soft low whispers of the green leaves and bright flowers on a spring morning who did not feel rainbow gleams of gladness running through his heart? Like beauty in the human form flow ers hint and foreshow relations of transcendent delicacy and sweetness and point to the beauti ful and unattainable rom the garden favorite to the dainty wild flower of the mountain all have a charm inexpressible a beauty unapproach able leading the way and wooing the spirit on ward and upward lowsweetly and instructive ly the flower bows its head to the breath of night or the rude storm At morning it yields its fra grant orison borne to heaven on the soft wings of the dew drop Thus the heart learns to bring a a holier offering to the shrine of all good The ancients called beauty in the human form the flowering of virture and flowers were wreath ed around their imagined Elysian They greet dawn with their smiles and sweetly bloom over the grave In all ages great minds have blessed them and gracefully listened to their in struction Some one has asked are exter nal nature and man so Not from any necessity is it thus Man in his riper age ruthlessly tore himself from the kind mother of his youth Nature is ever the instructor of the sou rom her its first teachings are derived She will never prove recreant to her trust Let the soul conscious of her continued favors child like love and learn and it has rich reward It becomes the favored child Its eyes are unseal ed to discover her rare beauties Thus she draws it into so close and endearing intimacy and so happily beguiles the hours of a weary life that it almost forgets its own mortality But flowers die That which bloomed to tell us of purity beauty and heaven in swee ness ofits fading glory bears a yet higher and plainer lesson a lesson not forgotten and which this little monitor must teach or it is untaught We listen for it is a sweet though mournful voice which bids ns mark the bright emblem of our own mortality The departure of beauty like the death song touches us sweetly yet sadly and re minds us how much was lost in our Eden home Under this influence the soul rises from earth in its power and looks and longs for the land where flowers will never fade Ion Madison University But faster still than tidings borne On that electric chord Rise the pure thoughts of him who loes The Christian's life the Lord Of him who taught in smiles ami tears With fervent lips to pray Maintains high converse here on car tn With bright WorldStar away Aye! though no outward ieh is bri (itlitd Nor outward answer gheii The sighing that humble heart is known and felt in heaven Those long frail wires may bend and break Those viewless Heralds stay But last word shall reach the throne Of God though far away 300 BUILDINGS BURNED! 300 to 400 amilies Houseless Ioss from to $300000 al a low cKtimale! The city of Detroit was yesterday visited with a most disastrous conflagration It is estimated that the loss cannot fall short of $250000 anti at least 300 families are houseless The fire originated in the large storehouse be tween Bates and Randolph streets unoccupied bv sparks from the propeller St Joseph winch was firing up at the lime at about halt past 10 in the forenoon and continued to rage until 4 in the afternoon The ware house occupied bv De AVolt the old Beithlct Market the Steamboat Hotel Hotel A'c are all in ashes Not a building is left standing below Jefferson Avenue between Brush st and an alley between Bates and Randolph streets except the warehouse of Brewster vv Dugeoii and Hotel and many are burned above Brush street On Jefierson Avenue every building on the south side is destroyed from the' new Campaii Block which was partially destroyed to the sec ond building below the Congregational church All between that and the river is in ashes It is impossible to give the names of the suf ferers as all is excitement at the time of prepar ing this account The'building was the Advertiser was greatly damaged but the materials were princi pally saved but of course there will be a loss by damage and delay in publication The citizensand firemen deserve great rcedit for their activity in endeavoring to arrest the flames At one time it was thought impossible to arrest the progress of the fire untill it hail burned every thing on the south side of Jetlcr son Avenue above Bates street but the wind shifted which enabled the firemen to get ahead of its progress Several buildings were blown up or torn down in the hopes of stopping its progress but without accomplishing the object Jefferson Avenue is almost entirely blocked up with furniture and store goods Mr Wales of Wales saved a great part of bis costly furniture but his loss is quite heavy as is the loss of Maj Biddle who owned the building probably $200(10 above insurance This building was the first brick edifice built in Michigan and was occupied by Jen Hull during the last war with England Mr less who was in the same build ing is large But we cannot give the names of all the sufferers its they are many We are unable to say how much of the pro perty destroyed was insured but we presume very little from the fact that insurance companies declin ed taking insurance in that neighborhood The Steamboat Hotel we understand was uninsured and the large block of Hotel was insured for only $5000 The small wooden buildings occupied as groceries and buchter shops below Jefferson av enue were probably all uninsured The cabinet wagon blacksmith and bake shops lkc were near ly all uninsured and their loss is large One cabi net shop contained about $2000 finished work which was all destroyed It would be just and an act of charity for those of our citizens who escaped the destruction incident to the fire yesterday to lend a helping hand to the poor who have met with such severe loss We hojie measures will be taken to furnish shelter to those who are houseless Many of them are sick and were removed on litters (ErM'he Draymen are deserving of great praise for their free tender of their time and drays yester day in removing furniture and the sick We saw a great number of draymen carting furniture free of charge (£7 The whole city was in danger during the progress of the fire yesterday from the sparks which were in every direction to be seen in the nir Even wooden buildings as far as Congress street were several times on fire but put out It was nec essary to keep a sentinel on the house tops in all parts of the city east of Woodard ave ICellef to the Sufferers The Mayor has promptly issued the following call to our citizens We hope it will be as promptly responded to public A II who fed an interest in those who suifered by the lair terri ble Conflagration are requested to meet at the United States Court Room this (Wednesday) morning at lit to adopt some plan for their immediate relief BUHL Mayor New Motive Power We find the substance of the following statement in McMakins and as it is new to us and presume to our' readers we transcribe it The inventor or dis coverer for we deem it the latter is Thomas Kealy Esq for many years the resident of Rollin Lena we Co The motive power is obtained by means of pul leys cords and weights ingeniously connected with two heavy pendehims suspended on either side of the frame of the machine Across the top of thft pendelums are arms connected with others which are attached to a balance wheel and as one pende lum swings to the right it causes the wheel to make half a revolution and as the other pcndelum swings to the left the wheel completes the revolu tion and by this swinging of these pendehims a con tinued rotary motion of the wheel is secured The simplicity ofits arangement is one of its most strik ing The virtue in the cornice seems to think that it may be applied with success to grist and saw mills and even locomotives 'if so it is one of the discoveries of the age for the original cost must be small and it costs nothing to run it We should be pleased to hear from Mr Kealy a somewhat more detailed and particular account of the machine and what it has accomplished The rest especially has a deep interest in anything that will cheaply and ex pedicionly turn her immense forest into boartfs and other kinds of lumber and her grp in into flour Markluff up tl wroMf tree The Jackson Gazette we often notice the sheet) has the following in relation to the act to prevent the circulation of Canada money: Our readers see from the above net that on the 3d day of April 1848 a Legislature pass ed and a Loeofoco Governor approved of the short sighted narrow contracted act above set A more tyranicnl act was never passed in a monurch ial government Who in the name of our com monwealth did the Legislature expect was to offend against this act save the honest hard working yeo manry of our own Michigan Did they expect Canadians ere to come into our State for the pur pose of putting 1 heir money into circulation here It never was done by them and probably never will be It is a miserable piece of tyranny to abuse our own citizens got up by the bought up Legisla tors and lobbies of the pist winter at Lansing in favor of the and Bank exten sion bill What a shameful story to be brought up for such purposes Let us say by tin bye a greate set (f asses and knaves never congregated together than fell into the new capitol the past winter" Now we feel bound to defend the whig mrinhers when thev are thus attacked The law referred to is it very proper one and was introduced and steadi ly advocated by Maj Terry one of the lead ers of the whig party of Michigan The Gazette should have enquired who the father of this bill was before it denounced him so hard Mr prides himself and justly on the act He made an elo quent speech on the bill on its passage and seem ed to have set his heart on its becoming a law So Mr Gazette you had bettor take in your sails lie mor ru I ic A in ion A meeting of the committee appointed to report a constitution and plan for the organization of a Ie
