THE DETROIT REE PRESS: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 20 1910 PART ONE STUDENTS MW OVER VICTORY MAjqh Arbor Alive With Saving Undergraduates ollowing Defeat of Minnesota iBONIKES AND BRIC A BRAC PUT INTO USE Gophers Banqueted and riendly Relations Between Schools is Cemented Special to The rea rees Ann Arbor Mich November 19 Ann Arbor Is happy tonight and don't care who knows It And if there is anyone In Washtenaw county who does not know It he is either deaf or dead The little old college town is far too small to hold the feeling and enthusiasm of the crowd that witnessed the Michigan triumph on erry field Saturday afternoon rom the moment the whistle marked the passage of the contest into history until the cold gray dawn of the morning af ter the citizens of Ann zVrbor were without peace When tlie mob of Michigan root ers rushed out on tile Held and at tempted to raise Yost upon their shoulders he said: boys don't mind me go along and have a good And need less to say they went Slate street shortly after the game was a mass of humanity from curb to curb Pistols rattlers horns and the leather lungs of deli rious students combined to make the bedlam complete Crowds of en thusiastic students bedecked witli the maize and blue pushed andhoved through the mass end kept Up a continuous shouting Some tnotisand students formed a pha lanx 10 abreast and a block in length and danced the rearing tear ing snake dance from erry field to tiie campus continuing through the business part of the city Auto mobiles gaily decorated added to the confusion by plowing back and forth through the seething mass Bonfires Blaze Ou Streets When night fell a huge bonfire across from the campus on North University avenue added a lurid glare to the proceedings of the night In its light students danced and shouted to fjieir content pool rooms and some of the down town drink dispensaries were crowded far into the night Bands of students paraded the streets and carried the celebrations far into tho small hours of the night "tn on all siutn occasions as a Michigan victory over Minnesota we suspended city service in Ann Arbor after said 1 superint ndent of the 1 division of the Detroit ed interurban lines last night exuberance on such an oc casion is always worth seeing and with so much marching in the streets of Ann Arbor occupying the streets from curb to curb we did not desire to interfere or break up the parades with our city ears We therefore placed them ail in tile car (houses after the game and inter rupted the parades as little as pos sible witli our interurban cars We really regretted having to interfere tn that extent but we had to care lor such a large proportion of I lie waiters that we were absolutely forced to give a more than quad rupled number Of cars to both De troit and Jackson All In all it was wonderfully pleasant crowd to handle and we did our best to keep up tho happy results of Michi great At training table tn the evening after the game the defeated men of Minnesota were entertained as guests of the Michigan men at an informal banquet The best of good feeling prevailed and the close relationship was as has always been felt between I ho two schools was renewed In the evening tho two teams formed a theater party at tho Whitney Theaters were racked tonight with students celebrating the Nltclxi gan victory The actors receive little consideration for their pains for the students are in possession of the town and the only thing in their mind is the one 'fact that Michigan won Streets throughout the down town district are in poss ession of floating bands of students ranging in number 'from 10 to sev eral hundred Several of the mov ing picture shows have been be sieged by mobs demanding free shows and it Is probable that many of the managers will have to open their hearts for this one night at least of Tin Pans A tin pan brigade several hun dred strong made the night hideous with their unholy din as they marched through the streets beat ing upon all manner of wash boil ers dish pans stolen spouting and in fact anything that will make a noise Torches of red tire lit up the scene and the din was punctu ated by a shooting of guns which resembled a corps of artillery in action The prize noise machine of the occasion was an auto full of howl ing students trailing a tail of pots pans and boilers fifty feet in length 'Tills terrific silence breaker was JdrJven through the streets at break neck speed DRY GOODS LEAGUE 1 2 3 Bro 684 20 745 Co $19 771 S3 LA Krollk Co 724 778 M3 Co 739 796 743 if Statistics of Continued from Page 15 Tart One a breathing spell and enabled her to take tiie ball temporarily out of danger Scare for Michigan Before the end of tills first period however there was arother and bigger scare in store for tiie Michi gan adherents With tiie ball inMichigan's 25 yard line big Walker broke through like an elephant charging through a canebrake and blocked one of Lawton's punts just as it left liis toe rank a Minnesota end was on the alert and he picked up tiie ball and carried it across tiie goal line without molestation Gloom sat heavy on tho Michigan thou sands while across the field in the cheering section men were going mad with loy according to their various ideas of how to cele brate success One of the officials had been touched by the ball while in play however and rank was beckoned back to the place xvltere this occurred Michigan being given the leather and permitted to try the play over again according to the rules which say that when the ball strikes an official it becomes dead on the spot Then Inwton punted out of danger and Minnesota's last real ehanee to make trouble had fled rumbles Ave Costly Costly fumbling by Michigan's ba cktield kept rite Yost men on the defensive for almost the entire first period Then the nervousness pass er! off will it lite penchant for let ting the spheroid get away and the Wolverines came into their own rom tiie beginning of the second quarter on they had the better of tiie going superiority in tiie newer st vie ot football giving them the call Coach team exhibited wonderful power at times ami its famous play was productive of tt lot of short gains Tiie visit ors from Minneapolis made first down occasionally by hammering tiie line and semi occasionally wore able to advance as much as 20 yards without losing tne leather When it came to a steady parade up the field such as the Maroon and Gold has been enjoying tit the expense of Its western opponents this sea son however things looked differ ent Pittgnmte the Shift Michigan able to guess that shift thing always but tlte diagnosis was right often enough to prevent any stampede In the middle portion of the lot too tiie Minnesota gains were considerably more numerous titan nearer the place where they counted Just when tiie Gophers were congratu lating themselves in having their opponents on the run and tiie Min neapolis contingent in the stands was yelling for a touchdown some one ot Mr young gentlemen broke through and slammed a Gopher so far behind his own line that a punt became the correct thing Michigan played tiie most open game that she had shown all sea son using tiie forward pass time and again In tiie early part of the fray this maneuver work very well for several reasons Sometimes the man designated as the receiver wasn't where the thrower expected him to be some times a Minnesota man Intercepted the ball and sometimes the heaver was bothered before he could sep erate himself from the leather at all Ignore Open ootbnll Tiie Dr Williams people on the other hand practically Ignored open football the on side kick ex cepted until after Michigan had scored Then they tried it in desper ation realizing that they had everything to win and nothing to lose with that big six staring them in the face The sliift play and a little niore of the same seemed to be about all that the boys from up north had to show Tiie play ers hopped and flitted about from one position to another in a man ner which was bewildering to tiie laymen but which didn't seem to worrv tiie Wolverines or one tiling tiie Gophers seemed to get in eacli way Maybe the Interference was so compact as to be easily spilled it a defensive man could reach one of Its mem bers maybe it was slow starting and Hie runner was delayed ac cordingly At any rate the Matzo and Blue tacklers managed to sift through most amazingly ami pick out the follow who was toting the pigskin Time and again it seemed that the Interferers had put all but one man out of the play yet tiiis lone gentleman managed to get his hands fastened on the ball's custo dian and either spill him outright or else slow him up until someone could come to the rescue and com plete the topping process Michigan Galan Strength Michigan appeared to gain Strengtli as tiie game progressed playing much better football in the third and fourth periods than in the first and second Tile final quarter was the one in which superiority was most in evidence but the last few moments of the third stanza led up to some of tiie thrillers of the closer Just before period No 3 ended a forward pass and some good line bucking supplemented by one dash around end by Patten gill had enabled tile men of Yost to take the ball to nine yard line from the center of field It was maddening to the specta tors to action halted at this exciting juncture because the period had ended but tiie rules make this sort of xtliing necessary and there I was nothing for the nervous ones to do lint sit and bite their nails for the three minutes during which the gladiators rested Nine turds to Co Tlay began in last session with tiie ball in Michigan's possession first down on Minnesota's nine yard stripe Here tiie Gophers gave their grittiest defensive exhibition of tiie day stopping two plays directed at the line and putting it up to Michi gan to attempt a score by some other route or else run a very large risk of losing tiie ball Lawton fell back for the field goal from place ment but missed the posts a foot the try being so close that many in the stands thought he had been successful This turn of affairs gave the spheroid tn Minnesota as a touch back and enabled that team to get out of immediate peril or tiie next few minutes there was nothing particularly important accomplished by either side and a scoreless tie seemed certain until Michigan finally got possession of the ball almost in midfield and started the attack that was to turn Ann Arbor into a city of Hie insane and io hang crepe on tiie doors up in Minneapolis Battle Im Hough No rougher battle has been waged on erry turf for many a day Tiie emergency hospital corps of the respective teams were busy after nearly every down patching up a player here restoring tho breath to one there and on an ear or a nose somewhere else husky sons in spite of their superior weight hail more need of tiie services than had battlers Before tiie game was five minutes old Y'oung tiie Minnesota tackle had to leave tiie fracas and later in the day llr dahl went in for Stevens' at half back Some of those who survived were badly banged up but would not give way to substitutes Tiie victors were compelled call a halt for repairs frequently but of tiie eleven men xvlio started not one left th'e field until tiie final whistle blew McMillan the lightest athlete on the field was terribly battered and man handled by big boys from Min neapolis and only a superb courage kept him going It was learned after tiie game that the little De troiter played the entire hour with a fractured rib That he must have endured agonies in such a bruising combat easily can be appreciated The whole history of football re cords no gamer exhibition than this Michigan men who were aware of the boy's condition cheered him un til their throats were sore Lawton Hero There is another Michigan hero whose name is on every tongue this evening He is George Lawton who just a day before the battle was chosen to play fullback in Thomp place or three years now the big Detroit lad lias been trying to win his Twice lie has failed by a narrow margin but tills time lie won it with something to spare It was his fine punting ttiat time after time enabled Michigan to gain on exchanges of kicks and to get tiie bail out of danger after one of periolical advances had been stopped Not alone in punting but on tiie defensive as an end did the tall fellow prove himself one of the most valuable men on the field He dove Into that famous 'Williams shift every time it came near his territory and usually lie broke it up before the man with the ball had gone very far Capt Benbrook set the entire Michigan team a splendid example by itis work on defense and offense lie was all over that field active as an end spilling interference bring ing down runners recovering fum bles and cutting up generally Pit ted against lioblnson one ot the strong men of the Gopher team tiie Michigan captain more than proved liis right to a place on the All Ame rica team for another year 111 Play Splendidly Borleske and Wells who collab orated In making touch down possible Jldmunds Cornwell attengill Magidsohn in fact the entire Michigan team played mag nificently Man for man the Wolver ines outclassed their opponents wore them down and outguessed them The defensive work of team was superb and the tackling deadly in its accuracy and fierceness Minnesota did practically nothing in the way of running back punts tiie Wolverine ends getting down tiie field so fast that the backs were glad to get a grip on the ball at all McGovern made some brilliant catches taking the ball on the dead run several times and thereby avert ing endless trouble for himself as there were hungry Maize and Hine men waiting to take advantage ot any slip Little Johnny seemed so wedded t5 liis famous shift play that lie de clined to try any tiling else even when the Wolverines had demons trated that consistent progress through heir line could not be ex pected In tiie final moments ot the game tiie Gophers showed that they knew something of forward passing which makes it ail the more strange that they did not exhibit it earlier Slight Have Opened Up The same criticism might have been made of attack Py opening up a little earlier tiie men of Yost possibly could have scored another touchdown However six points look considerably larger than a cipher and there is no room left for argument as to the better team Bromley Walker and Johnson were conspicuous in their service for the Maroon ami Gold while rank and Pickering' the ends played some great football Johnson gained a lot of ground from the shift formation seeming to be able to wiggle through openings that his fellows overlooked Playing the old style game with out forward passes it is probable that tiie two teams might go on battling forever without either crossing tiie goal line There can be no doubt that Dr Williams presented a potverful aggregation but it is equally true tliat Yost's pupils knew tiie game better and were quicker io take advantage of in the luck rom a point of view the contest was a corker Although there were few long gains the bail changed hands frequently and the plays wore of such nature tiiat they could be followed easily Daring and strenuous tackling in the open plenty of kicking and considerable fumbling of which both sides were guilty at times served to keep those in the stands on edge from whistle to i 1 1 Penalties aside from those for in completed forward passes were not particularly numerous holding be ing tiie principal offense Consid ering tiie fact that both teams were fighting for every inch of ground witli the result of the battle in doubt right up to its final period the officials had rather a light day It was a rough scrap almost bru tally so at times but tiie roughnesswas of tiie clean sort rather than any deliberate attempt to maim opponents and put them out of ac tion Sportsmanlike Spirit Minnesota showed a sportsman like spirit in accepting lie ruling of tiie officials in the first quarter when rank went over tiie Michi gan line for ills nea touchdown To have had tiie ball called back and five points taken nway on a technicality must have been a bit ter pill for tho Gophers to swallow but they took It like gentlemen and neither at tiie time nor afterward had anything tn sav that in the slightest degree reflected on the men who handled the contest In another column will bo found a complete account of the progress of tiie ball during the entire game LAUBEN TAKES INAL GAME Cliicaco November 13 Getting a long lead at the start Waiter Latibcn of Chi rapj took I he third and final same of tlio home series with St Louts in the 1 li re ion championship of tho Na tional Billiard league by defeating Pierre Maupomo the Mexican player 50 to 3 tonight The Mexican expert did not perform ar consistently ns lie did on Thursday night in itis match with Van I ewin nor was he as spectacular Maupomo did not re sort to much deliberate safety play but failed to utilize a number of openings left him by the Chicagoan The game was tiie longest of tho series taking 111 innings Iauben averaged450 and Maupome 3S7 ootball at Wyandotte What is expected to be a very good and interesting game wifi be played at Wy andotte the winner of the Northwestern Eastern A game for that date Such a game would be a great attraction and one which would be appreciated by the local lootball public Should this challenge be accepted
