on the canal Aid O'Sullivan who is a big opinion the work should be com pleted "There are two reasontr why the work should not be given up" said this gentleman is that so much money has been expended on the canal and the other is that it would take a large sum to fill in that portion dredged" Some of the There have the knockers was started the latter being great ly In the majority and one of strongest arguments against feasibility of the project is that sand banks will not remain at solid especially at the angle which they are dug One man says there will be a sandbar formed at the Intersection of the canal and the Black river and farmers living on the banks of the river will be flooded out of their homes in spring time The money spent for digging the canal is not all that the city will be liable for if certain lawsuits turn out in favor of the plaintiffs These controversies have arisen over bridges necessitated by the con struction of the aqueduct and be cause of drains the Military street bridge who now have to hold their noses will rejoice and those whose offices or stores are situated In proximity to the river will bless the men who al most 11 yearg ago decided that what was needed to remedy the evil was a stream of fresh lake water cours ing between the banks of the Black river flushing it out continually and giving disease germs no oppor tunity to breed in the midst cf the city's business activities Port Huron October 22 Clean sparkling water will soon be flow ing through the middle of Port Hu ron and the vile odors arising from the Black river that dirty dis agreeable stream will be a thing of the past Delicate noses will have no cause for offense and res idents of pride In a bright of which of This wonderful will be worked by Lake Huron to the project which was years but undertaken only 10 years ago And what a long decade that has been waiting for the comple tilon of a work that was promised two and a half years ago Now the contractor has assured Port Huron that the big ditch will be a reality In less than two months It was in January of 1900 that the canal scheme was voted on as even at that time the Black river had made Itself most unpleasant by producing sickening odors caused by refuse dumped Into it from sev eral factories along its banks while its appearance was almost enough to lurn a stomach That little was thought of the proposi tion to flush the river by means of a canal is shown by the fact that but 890 votes in all were cast and of that number 379 were against the plan It would be a difficult task to find at the present day all the owners who voted on the but it Is an easy matter hundreds who never were of it and never will be And while the more thoughtful citizens are trying to figure out just what the canal has so far cost the city those shrewd' ones who agreed to pay their debts when the canal Is finished are evidently not worrying over the necessity of paying their bills soon City Haa Spent $104000 During the ten years in which Port future has been glow ingly portrayed because of the con templated vcompletlon of the canal the city has expended something like $104750 and the end is not yet At the outset when the people's approval was given the scheme a fund of $100000 was voted Later when it was seen that this sum would be insufficient to finish the work an additional appropriation of $25000 was made and later still $10000 more was placed at the dis posal of the canal commission? However these two latter amounts have not been touched as the money over the $100000 is being taken the government has planted in the vicinity of Marquette about 7000000 fish which is a some what larger number than has been planted in past years The total number of fry planted this year on the south shore of Lake Superior not far from 25000000 At first thought it would seem that this was a pretty liberal allotment but as a matter of fact it is only a drop in the bucket In compari son the fish hatchery of the state of Pennsylvania produces an annual output of over 1000000000 a large proportion of which are planted in Iake Erie in the vicinity of the city of Erie while the government hatcheries add considerably to (this quota When it is considered that Pennsylvania is not a fishing state these are quite remarkable and go to show that the Marquette fishermen are not far from right when they say that Lake Superior has been fished out Her So you ast daughter her hand hey? she done give yo it I presume? This is a question that Marquette fishermen in common with others on the south shore of the lake are asking Catches have never been so light The result of an all day trip with one of the fish tug Is often not more than 800 pounds of fish which is not enough to pay the op erating expenses A half ton is considered an average catch on a single trip That Lake Superior known as the abode of the finest whitefish in the world is fast becoming a fishless sea Is a startling statement but that is what the fishermen assert The fishermen have been doing les and less business each year for some 1 time The tugs have been going! farther and farther out each suc ceeding season and now the nets are set as much as a five run out of Marquette and even in those unfrequented waters there very few fish in the a and rloyment was as engineer steamer Neighbor Is any one sick at vour house Johnny? respected love atory skat rival with Kent but failed to beg hla pardon This led to complications in the young mind as to how he stood in the admiration Tak ing advantage of a few spare mo ments next day in school he penned an epistle the music of his heart strings The tender composition was placed in an envelope and sealed but then something happened just what no one will ever know However the letter never reached its destination until this week when the book in which It was placed by its author was taken from the supply room of the school board and sent to the Houghton school It was opened and the letter drop ped out The address was plain so a messenger was dispatched with the letter to Miss Emery who read it over very carefully and the school teachers with whom she con fided regarding the "case" of her youth had good laugh as Kent is now married and has a fine bby boy from the general fund This is a matter of economy because if the city were to float bonds for $35000 the interest paid out would be greater than that now accruing on the funds in the banks But to get back to the subject Contractor John Carland of To ledo agreed to complete the work by January 1908 a forfeit of $10 per day being payable for everv day required over the specified day for the winding up of the work At that rate he would now owe the city of Port Huron over $8000 How ever he has not yet been asked to settle this item in the contract The first contract was signed ebruary 10 1902 between Port Huron and the Cuyahoga Contract ing company of Cleveland to con struct the canal for $81443 This company commenced work at Lake Huron but after proceeding a few hundred feet toward the Black riv er gave up the job and work came to a standstill Walt of our Years was almost four year before canal these but their numer ical proportion on the two lakes is probably about the same as in the case of the steam tugs There are fewer steam tugs on Lake Superior now than in the past No tugs are now operated out of Ontonagon while last year there were two In commenting on this condition of affairs August Anderson oper ator of the tug Columbia stated that the reason fishing was so much poorer in Lake Superior than in the other great lakes was that the government was not replanting fast enough to take the place of those fished out each year Lake Superior Is now declared to be the poorest of the great lakes as far as fishing is concerned and this in the face of the fact that it is fished the least Until the states and the federal gov ernment began planting by the mil lions and billions
