facilities at hand but by the splendid work of the fire brigade and students the blaze was extinguished by 10 The saving of the church is pronounced by Dr Lancaster as little short of miraculous The The excitement in the city is much greater than at any time during the campaign November Suits were filed in the circuit court at Lima this evening by Attorney General Ellis against four subsidiary compan ies said to be controlled by the Stand ard Oil Co of New Jersey to prevent the further operation of the alleged combine known as the Oil The companies named as defendants are the Ohio Oil Co the Solar Refining Co the Buckeye Pipe Line Co and the Standard Oil Co of Ohio The petitions allege that the Stand ard Oil Co of New Jersey owns and controls all the stock of these four companies except an amount sufficient to maintain a directorate and a cor porate existence in Ohio It is further alleged that the control of these com panies is exercised in restraint of trade and in contravention of the anti trust laws of the state The petitions ask the court to oust the four companies from the assumed right to permit their stock to be con trolled by the Standard Oil Co of New Jersey and that they be prevented from continuing their operations as auxiliaries of the so called oil trust and for such other relief as mav be deemed proper under the laws of Ohio The suits are the outgrowth of the trial of the case against the Standard Oil Co at indlay during which the facts alleged against the subsidiary companies were brought out Lansing Mich November An in quiry from the city attorney of Kala mazoo brings out the fact that since the court declared the act in relation to itinerant merchants passed In 1905 "invalid the laity of 1901 is opera tive an this act a state as well local" license The act of 1905 held to invalid established the license fees' to be paid in cities of various sizes its defect be ing that the council was authorized to suspend such payment when it saw fit The act of 1901 now in effect provides that a transient merchant must pay $25 for a state license deposit $500 with the secretary of state as security against claims and also take out a to investigate alleged smallpox cases in the south ern extremity of the city A local" mall carrier tonight ad dressed the council and said that he had been turned back from houses where he intended to deliver mall the inmates telling him that they had smallpox but that there were no signs or placards upon the houses toindicate the presence of the disease Even the children bn the' streets he declared were brok en out with the disease Health Officer Cunningham says that there are about twenty five cases known of but that the people In that section of the city being largely of thepoorer working class suppress information of the disease in order to remain attheir employ ment It is declared that the dis ease was transmitted here by a number of men who came here to work from Saginaw At ager of the bank has been engaged in litigation which will be settled out of court with Thomp son a former stockholder in the Imperial Wheel Co The Poles con fused the name' of Thomp son who is in no way connected with the bank Thomp son its president and arrived at the conclusion that their money was in danger They are also parish ioners of St Polish church which at times has borrowed mon ey at the bank They got an ab surd idea that their deposits were liable to garnishee for obligations of the church which by the way is in good financial condition Other depositors in the savings department caught the alarm and all day two tellers were kept busy handing out money as the savings books were presented The bank did not close at the usual time but announced that payment would con tinue until the last man in the line had his money The bank was amply provided with cash to meet the run and was not obliged to call for assistance from any of the other city banks The depositors who have withdrawn their money will lose the semi an nual interest which would have been declared within ten days The run has not extended to any ex tent to the savings depositors in the other banks HOME operators was held here this afternoon for the purpose of receiving a request from the miners for a joint conference The request was granted and miners and operators will meet in city afternoon No ultimatum was served upon operators as it was reported would be done and the operators have had no official notice of any such proceed ings It is true the district board of the union has to stand by a demand for an increase from two and one fourth to seven and one third cents per inch in removing slate and all foreign substances from the entries but this action is not regarded as final This demand will be presented to the operators Wednesday At this after meeting the operators did not ciscuss it The situation here is not regarded as serious although there is always fear of a strike during mining contro versies Mining Commissioner Thomas Davis tonight said that the situation did not now appear serious and Pres ident John Harris concurred in this view In the event that a disagree ment
