Wednesday evening at Morrison Hall Division No 6 Ancient Order of Hl berians will celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Commodore John Barry now officially designated by Congress as the "ather of the American The local celebration is in response to a circular issued by the national president of the Hibernians Matthew Cummings of Boston John Barry was born in Wexford Ire land and came to this country when a small boy He was the owner of a mer chant vessel when the revolutionary war broke out and he made a gift of the ship to the revolutionary fathers He was the first commander of the first does not believe that it would injuriously affect the business of the commission merchants He said: far as rotten fruit is concerned the city now has the right to confiscate such stuff when it is the insti tution and applauded the support which has been given so loyally by its friends He spoke of the benefit of Institutions of its kind in general to a city and to human ity mentioning tne musical program was given by the City Band Several selections were also sung by the Llederkranz and children of the home Religious Service The morning program was in the ture of a religious service It was in charge of the Rev Peters opened the program with a short address of welcome There was congregational singing and also an anthem by the choir of Zion's Church The principal address was made by the Rev Hitz who en couraged hearty support of the institu tion Others who took part in the pro gram were the Rev A Keller and the Rev Edward Vornholt Had it not been for the threatening weather it is believed that 5000 persons would have been on the lawn of the in stitution during the evening As it was the crowd was one of the largest ever present at one of the annual festivals At the completion of the program most of the visitors paid a visit to the various buildings of the Institution which had been thrown open for inspection The rain late in the afternoon inter ferred to some extent with the attend ance but many of the visitors remained at the grounds and partook of supper which was provided by the women of the Walsen Verein Nearly 1000 persons were in the big refectory at noon and half that number dined there in the evening The annual report of the officers which was presented to all the visitors showed the institution to be in a flourishing condi tion MRS MARY ANN VAN SICKLE Dailey found a friend in a man giving the name of red Ken ned' and when he failed to overtake Chorhi who ran like a deer he returned with Kennedy When the crowd of Hun garians saw the two approaching their bravery born of barrel house liquor van ished and they fled Dailey and Kennedy overtook one and as they reached him he threw away a big six shooter After a severe struggle he was arrested and Dailey and his friend finding Sawyer lying bleeding in the street gave their attention to him Dailey suffered several painful blows in his struggle with the man arrested Chief of olice Metzger says that the case is another one which illustrates the difficulty which the police encounter in dealing with criminal foreign popula tion A determined effort is being made to fasten the responsibility for
