Detroit Boys ELMWOOD AVENUE UMBLES ABE COSTLY Ohioans Thrice Are Held for Downs With a Touchdown Apparently Inevitable Some great defensive play and one brilliant dash by Capt Spiegel enabled to score a victory over the husky Oberlin academy team yesterday afternoon The score stood 6 to 2 when the final whistle blew scoring a touchdown and the resulting goal while points were se curd through the medium of a safety by the Elmwood avenue quarterback Huntington The condition of the field which was vile beyond description made luck a big factor in the contest With firm footing it is likely that the Red and Blue team would have run up a considerably larger score Under the conditions that prevailed however Coach people were well satisfied with one Lake Erie itself couldn't have been any wetter than the gridiron The higher spots were a bog and the low places pools of water several inches deep umbling naturally was to be ex pected and in this respect DftU was woefully weak The home boys managed to make a mess of nearly all their attempts to catch punts and their inability to squeeze the slimy plkskln kept them in con stant trouble Oberlin's grasp of the leather was not any too secure but its fumbles were both less frequent and less costly than those of the Detroit team Game Defensive lay No gamer exhibition of last ditch fighting ever has been given by a local eleven than that furnished by the Red 'and Blue Three times the Oberlin backs and tackles tore their way to within a foot of the Elmwood men's goal line and three times th eball went over to on downs With less than two yards to go at the very end of the game Oberlin could not make the grade the back being stopped in his tracks just as the final whistle sounded On another occasion Ober lin fumbled and lost the ball when well within the danger zone The Ohioans seemed to gain at will through the line until ft the five yard line was reached but after that point they wore stopped as effectually as though opposed by a stone wall Poor judgment on the part of the visiting quarter back together with the fact that the Lacks played entirely too closa to the line was partly to blame for the lack of gaining ability when the pinches came The bulldog tenacity of the defense completed the obstacle umbling Makes Trouble Constant fumbling kept the Elm wood avenue outfit on the defen sive and with the exception of tho time when its touchdown was scor ed the home team never really threatened to score Oberlin had an excellent punter and his kicks ef fectually kept the opposition out side the danger zone Considering the condition of the ball the Buck eye backs handled Capt spirals in fine form The play that gave Oberlin its score happened about tha middle of the first half" Standing about on his own 45 yard line the wisiting''kick ers drove a low hard puht toward the goal 'Huntington played the ball for a bound and it went over his head almost to the goal line The little quarterback tried to pick up the leather when he finally overtook It and in so do ing made a fatal error An Oberlin man charging down the field threw him bodily over the line and thereby earned two points the visitors The half ended without' further scoring on either side though Ober lin constantly threatened kicked off to open the second half and held the visitors so that they tVere obliged' to re turn the ball The Elmwood aver nue team received the leather in midfield and Capt num ber was called on the first line up Shaking off half a dozen tacklersrunning twice across the field in the bewildering dodging sprint that is all his own Spiegel raced half the length of the gridiron and planted the leather squarely be tween the goal posts Oberlin Loses Pepper Oberlin seemed to lose its pepper for the next few minutes and was correspondingly spry ap parently being on Its way to further points One of the in evitable turned the tide however and for the remainder of the game Coach men had to devote themselves almost en tirely to beating off attacks on their goal That they were able to do so was due to a fighting spirit that in previous games had been lacking in the team' Individual honors went to Capt Spiegel Tuomy the Sullivan boys and Brush for the Spiegel A showed defensive that he either has not possessed or has not had occassion to exhibit previously breaking Up plays time after time Dunbar Sullivan made one of the best gains of the' only forward pass that was able to negotiate successfully Ends Are Alert The alertness of ends in covering punts and taking advan tage of the fumbles was a big fac tor in the visiting showing Thfe flankers followed the ball re 4 markably 'considering the terrible footing ullback Gray and Capt 4 Reillv of Oberlin also played i stronglv each making some big gains through the line The Ober lin forwards had all the better of 4 their opponents in the first hair 4 opening big holes for the backs but toward the close cf the game waked up and held Its own When the Crucial tests cams Inside of the home five yard the forwards always were there the help of the secon dary defense which was able to draw in closer than when the play was in midfield apparently being the necessary sustainer showed a nice variety of plays but could not make many 4 of them work on account of the heavj going and the fumbling OBERLIN 1 Bruh iLL Kllner Barrett Gradi
