THE BELLEVILLE TELESCOPE, Thursday, March 8, 1979 7A Girl Buffs Knocked Out Of Playoffs by SE Saline The Belleville girls basketball team bowed out of its season with a 38-31 loss to Southeast of Saline at Gypsum Monday, March 5, coming on the heels of a convincing thrashig by the Buffs of Minneapolis, 53-30, on Friday. The Buffs wera knocked out of the Class 3A playoffs and finish with a 5-13 overall record. They were 3-9 in NCKL play for coaches Gene Spannenberg and Ron Wells. The Buffs jumped out in front 8-7 on Saline in the first quarter Monday, but then sufferred through the short end of a 10-3 second quarter and were unable to make up the difference. "Our offense sputterred badly the second quarter," said head coach Spannenberg.

But behind the spark of Shelly Thayer, the Buffs fought back in the second half to tie it at 21. But then Southeast went on a scoring spurt and the Buffs never got close again. Senior Lisa Bridgman closed out her outstanding career with the Buffs by scoring 13, and Shelly chipped in eight points. Against Minneapolis, a team that beat the Buffs in tournament action earlier, Spannenberg credited good team defense for the win. And "we ran the offense well, giving us good shot selection," he said.

"Our shooting percentage was 57 percent, the best of the year." Lisa as usual led the team with 19 Johnson 0 0 1 0 points, and freshman Debbie Finley added Blazek 1 0 0 2 16 points. Havel 0 0 0 0 Besides Lisa, seniors who played their Goleman 0 0 0 0 final game for the Buffs included Michelle Pachta 0 0 0 0 Levendofsky, Jan Blazek, Kathy Johnson Popelka 0 0 0 0 and Sharon Havel. The Broncs of coach Eugene Johnson were led by Terry Thompsons 30 points and 22 from Jeff Dinkel to beat the The Vikes, who were topped by Bill Brummer with 13 points, got down 37-3 in the first quarter and the Broncs were super-hot.

Waconda East was the only Pike Irail League team to beat Lebanon in the regular season. Lebanon got into the Class 1A Regional Tournament spirit full swing by downing the Esbon Tigers 79-31. Playing inspired basketball, the Bronchos jumped to a commanding 20-4 1st quarter lead. A half court press applied throughout the game held the Tigers offense punch to 4-6-10-11 each quarter. Coach Schmidt of Esbon, decked out in a cowboy hat during the game, seemed to provide the Bronchos a little extra firepower on offense as they exploded for 41 points in the first half.

Nine players got into the scoring with three in double figures for Lebanon. Terry Thompson hit 12 of 17 from the field for 7 percent, Daryl Callahan was 6 of 15 for 40 percent, Rick Ohmstede 6 of 9 for 66 2-3rd, Jeff Dinkel 4 of 10 for 40 percent and Mike Landwehr 3 of 6 for 50 percent. Terry and Daryl both pulled down 11 rebounds. Cross-Country basketball between Kensington Goldbugs and Lebanon Bronchos clashed in the semifinals of the Mankato regional with the Bronchos improving its season's record to 18-2. Lebanon jumped to a 16-81st quarter lead with a two-hand slam dunk by the chos 6-0 junior, Terry Thompson.

A 12-point halftime lead, 31-19, seemed in doubt several times during the 2nd half, but it finally held up as the final margin of victory for the Bronchos 60-49. Kensington won the battle of the fouls with 25, but the Bronchos finished the game with 6 players with 4 fouls.
