he has inspired wherever he went IL Taft made this statement: "The State of New York is the most Republican port of the United States even more Republican than the State of Pennsylvania Thrc is every indication through that part of the state above Bronx that there will be a majority the Republican tiqket nearly equal that of Mr Roosevelt four years ago Democratic majority of the city of New York will' probably not exceed 70000 votes This will be overcome by the Republican vote above the Bronx with such overwhelming force as to give the Republican ticket in the Empire State a clear majority from 100000 This roseate view of the nominee has neon reflected in each or tne speeches he made today Mr Taft had cordial receptions In Elmira Waverly Owego Lesterehlrc Binghamton Whit ney's Point the spine is frac tured so tlif) and in 1900 the rinsing odds the night before elec tion were the same In 1904 at the Hoff man the night before de feat tho odds wore 6 to 1 and a few bets were made at 10 to 1 the overwhelm ing defeat of tho Democratic nominee thus being accurately foreshadowed in the bet ting At this late hour it would take a sen 1 nation of the first magnitude probably to change those odds They have lengthened Instead of shortened since Mr Rockefel little interview was published Perhaps no previous campaign has ever been as short as this the Republicans waiting until Oct 1 to go Into action Democratic confidence which was In cvl den ha at the Denver convention grown by leaps and bounds until that time and in some quarters has been con tinued Confidence Based on Panic At the Denver convention and at the time the campaign was mapped out much of this confidence seined to be based on the panic of last fall and the number of mon out of work The blank demanding guaranteed bank deposits was looked upon as a drawing one for voters by reason the panic and particularly effective for campaign pur poses in tlie middle West The panic as a campaign weapon in the minds of some has not come up to expectations mainly because tho localities most affected by it have had a chance to recover and more men than perhaps was calculated have undoubtedly gone back to work The Republican's soft spot lias been largely the middle West and a good chance for defeat lay too in the factional contest's which at tho beginning of this campaign existed in almost every Tb'pub llcon state Those who are predicting Republican success next Tuesday after a careful survey of the country base such predictions largely on the remarkable manner In which Republicans got to gether on the hnrno stretch tho friendli ness of the business interests again for the party a friendliness which has be come more marked as the campaign has proceeded tho immense power of the fed eral patronage and the great reduction in the number of unemployed in the last month Both Nominees Are Busy Mr Taft has talked in twenty three states made 409 speeches and addressed two or three million people since the call came to him to get busy and abandon he plan trr a rront poren campaign Bryan has talked a great deal more has not visited as many states as Taft who invaded the South a bit of work Mr Bryan did not think necessary for obvious reasons The munbor of speeches the two men have made in ft day have been about the same but as an endurance test it lias broken all records and tho future in this respect may never see an other such grilling run lost Judging from the talk of those who have been watch ing it While the Republicans are confident of carrying New York the re election of Governor business men up Broadway for Taft in which it is estimated 55000 men participated and a speech delivered at Riding Academy before an enormous crowd by Elihu Root secretary of state Mr Root confined himself al most entirely to citing reasons why Mr Bryan should not bo elected to succeed Mr Roosevelt Mr Taft wound up bls campaign in tills state with a tour through the southern tier of counties ending at Rochester to night but like Mr Bryan he is to keep up the endurance contest Monday and so is Governor Hughes who will make speeches In this city on that day But for all Intents and purposes the campaign is closed and naught remains but to cast and count the votes and se6 how near the official and unofficial fore casters came to it once more Never at any time has tiic present po litical contest had the sensational features of some of those of the past Unusually dull at its beginning it has continued so save for tho letters read by Mr Hearst which resulted in the elimination uf Senator oraker and Governor Haskell Rockefeller In inal Sensation Mr Hearst has not come up to the hopes of sensation lovers in unloading letters more interesting than his first batch contained and it has apparently remained for Mr Rockefeller to inject the sensation of the closing days without which a presidential campaign bo a campaign at all But for Mr interview sup porting Taft the campaign might have closed as dully as it began but now both sides are busy over it Chairman Mack for the Democrats is out with a statement that the interview followed ten days' negotiations between the Republican managers and I lie Stan dard Oil to get tile support and 11000000 contribution and the latest White House utterance calls the Interview a Rockefeller trick done with the con nivance of the Democrats Naturally it has enabled both Mr Bryan and Mr Taft to make new speeches with Standard OH and Mr Rockefeller as their text in their heart breaking speech making finish Nothing has come from Mr 'Rockefeller to show which side is right It la perhaps significant to look im partially that despite the strenuous at tempts being made to use the Rockefeller interview as a coup de grace the
