the wonderful amount of respect accorded the American woman and the marvelous progress the world has made along humanitar ian lines Both facts were brougnt very forcibly to my notice and in each case 'I was able to make special observations Everywhere 1 went I found Americans and in making the trip over I was given an opportunity td witness three bright instances of the manner the ocean lines have of coming to the rescue of unfortunate ships or seamen "But the American woman! one could write volumes and Atill leave something untold She is the sweetest most gracious and bcst gowned of any I have ever met She has gained such a reputation for her endearing quali ties that she could travel unmolested all over the world American Excels "The American woman excels in the art of wearing clothes well This has been made possible because she is not an extremist Her gowns are all admirable fits and she is the best footed of any She carries herself with easv grace and has a sweet man ner about her that appeals to all who see her Added to all this her ex ceeding good taste serves to make a tout ensemble not often seen "On the trip over we had only been two days out when a man became de mented and cutting down a life pre server called out to his companions to watch him take bath True to his word he jumped overboard and it was seemingly but a second when the ship had stopped and rounded "to to get him During the Interval that elapsed between his jumping in and his rescue made a remarkable sight riding in evident security on top of the waves "We had been about three days out when a rench tramp steamer hailed us a distress signal about mid ocean We stopped and the exchange of signals then indicated that a doctor was needed A boat was lowered and the surgeon sent over On go ing to the attended a the ater to which King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra came unannounced I thought that some display would be made but wao disappointed They sat in the royal box without any public demonstration! found out after ward that oven though the audience had not risen en masse it was not out of I discovered that the king is very democratic andidol ized by the masses while 'the queen is equally well beloved "American enterprise is changing the situation: in England 'met a man one day who tolJ me that he afraid we Americans 'wo'pld soon buy! up his country: But it lsvafact that Zimerican money has made wonderful changes in every walk of life from the ordinary business to the theaters Street1 railway systems are being huilt under American "au pices and everything from a restaurant up is being installed American Money in England "I found out thait the Sqrosis shoe which is sold by us in this city hasa great demand not only in England but throughout all the largest cities In Europe As a business man that fact appealed to me with wonderful force and I was inclined to believe that there really is no end to the en terprise of the citizens of his coun try This impression was emphasized one day when I saw a crowd standing cutside an American restaurant watch ing the man Jnsideturn a batch of flapjacks It is only in England how ever that American money is making itself felt to such a degree rance and Germany have not been affected very materially by it yet "We came home from aris with a direct line of exclusive importations that will surprise the people of this city In the latest gowns and 'lingerie we have a lot that will surpass tall our previous attempts It is no exaggera tion to say that we made extraord inary efforts to outdo anything
