workings of each department and to point out the advantages of the new building over the old one which they are leaving Most interesting of all the rest was the massive vault which is closed by a door particular class On the seventh floor of tlie building arc located what is known as the rooms These provide space for tlie stor age batteries which in modern telephone I exchanges have replaced the old batter ies distributed at the subscribers houses I and the large power plant required for I charging the batteries The ceils of each battery are very large each one being about the size of a small desk The lines first enter the exchange in these rooms terminating on what Is called a main distributing frame1' The lines terminate on one side of the frame while i the switchboard terminals are connected to the other side of the frame and the frame itself affords run ways for remova ble wires which may be so strung in the frame as to connect any switchboard terminal with any line One side of this frame is conioletelv covered with small lightning protectors which serve to discharge the lines of nnv dan gerous currents which might come upon them through accidental contact with mei wires or rnrougn lightning charges It is to these nroteiturs which tlie safety of modern telephones during severe storms is ascribed Guard Against aulty Service Wire chiefs who lest the lines also have their desks in the terminal room There are slij wire chiefs all equipped with delicate apparatus for accurately locating the exact position of any faults which may creep The clearing and testing of (lie toll lines is assigned to two other men known as "Toll Wire Chiefs who occupy jointly a desk arranged for this work This desk Is also located in the terminal room Besides tins one end of the room is com pletely filled with frames and racks which carry the auxiliary apparatus necessary for carmns out the functions of the switchboards These racks are known ns the "intermediate frame "relay 11 i4 desks and chairs which constitute the furnishings of the different depart ments where the bank's business will be transacted The large central lobby of the bank covers an area of more than 1000 square feet' It is supplied with cheek counters and telephone booths which are for the use of the public The lobby' is sur rounded by the bank counter which is placed between large columns of Georgia marble This cumiter Is of dark green marble and bronze which is arranged with a view to carrying out the Greek architectural effects The Merchants' National Bank was es tablished In 1865 and many of the men
