where he regaled the trusting physician with a story of his being the son of the president of the Bank of Canada at Hamilton Ont Mr Bessey's old home He then confided to the doctor that he was without money and did riot want his father to know it The sympathetic doctor invited Mr Roach to spend that night at his house and Mr Roach invited himself to spend the following night departing on the third day it is alleged with a few little souvenirs in the shape of a gold watch valued at $175 a scarf pin val ued at $10 a watch and chain valued at $10 and a pair of bracelets valued at $15 The first barrel of su gar ever made in the upper peninsula and is now in full operation The plant is situated on the bank of the Me nominee river and was erected by the Kilby Manufacturing Co of Cleveland It is owned by the Menominee RiverSugar Co and is supplied with beets from territory as far north as Escanaba in Michigan and as far south as Green Bay in Wisconsin Seventeen counties in the two states contribute beets The factory has a capacity of 1000 tons of beets a day and is as large as any in the state It is the pioneer beet sugar manufacturing plant of the upper peninsula and northern Wisconsin and citizens of several other cities are watching closely the outcome of the experiment If this factory proves a success there may be one at Green Bay Wis and atSault Ste Marie in a
