better paid after the next Congress adjourns It the plans of Senator Quarles of Wisconsin carry as he intends them Senator Quarles has announced the intention of introducing a bill providing for raising the salaries of the carriers from $600 a year and he promises to use his influence to get the measure through Congress A disposition to favor the bill has been evinced by Postmaster General Payne and It is thought that a majority of the Indiana members of Congress will sup port the bill Senator airbanks who has been one of the most prominent of Senators In advocating the extension1 of the service throughout the country is said to favor increasing the pay of the carriers Senator Beveridge is also supposed to favor It Mr Beveridge seldom talks of legislation or announces' his intention of voting for or against a bill but it is understood that ho would like to see the rural mall delivery pushed to the fullest extent The two Indiana Senators have worked hard for the extension of tho rural mail delivery service In Indiana In tho Second and Twelfth districts Seuiator airbanks has personally supervised the establishment of routes and in the other two Democratic districts the Third and ourth Mr Beveridge has worked along the same linos In tho other congres sional districts of th State the repre sentatives in Congress have built up a rural free delivery system not excelled by any State in tho union Senator airbanks has also favored the telephone service for rural delivery He secured the adoption of nn amendment to the postal appropriation bill which allows the Postmaster General to expert ment with telephone stamps for tho de livery of letters in rural districts by telephone by postmasters of small1 towns near the ndresse of the letters The Indiana rural delivery carriers re cently adopted resolutions asking for an increase in pay Copies of the resolu tions were sent to the Indiana Senators and will be presented to the committee which will receive Senator Quarles bill Other States have adopted similar reso lutions and the sentiment to raise the pay of the carriers is general in the Postoffice Department 1 John Shldeler assistant postmaster in the Indianapolis office said yesterday that the carriers are not well paid be cause of the expense incident to their of fice in maintaining a horse and wagon for the delivery of mall He
