very popular since tho Amateur Athletic Union took over the control of this branch of sport In 1914 and the A A female champions have made such fine reenrds in awlmmina anrf Ing that invitations are continually being extended Ao these champions to make trips across the continent to take part in national champion ships and special races As many of these girl swimmers are under 21 years of agerthey have Invariably been compelled to de cline all such invitations owlna to tlie fact that the present A A rules do not permit a registered amateur to ask for or receive ex penses for trainer coach relative or friend fo accompany them onsuch trips This rule was placed on the books to cover male athletes and was in effect before women were allowed to become registered in tlie A A It is felt however that this rule works a hardship on young girl swimmers and secretary red erick At Rubien is offering an amendment allowing women swim mers under 21 years of age to ask for and receive actual travelling expenses for a chaperone A change is also proposed in the hlght of the platform In the high dive for women The present rules were framed for men and provide for two platforms the highest one to be not less than 24 feet and not more than 27 feet above the surface of the water The new rule which Is proposed will make the hfght of the highest platform for women not less than 20 feet and not more than 22 feet Otto Wahle chairman' of the swimming committee proposes an amendment to the swimming rules which if passed will permit of the holding of outdoor swimming cham pionships in outdoor swimming pools According to the interpre ration placed on the present rule by the championship committee outdoor swimming championships could not be held In such pools as the role now calls for such championships to be held In still open waters or in tidal waters at high tide Owing to the temperature of the water on the Pacific coast ocean bathing Is not popular while on the other hand the open air pools which are built right on the beach and containing salt water of the proper tenpeiature are very popu lar especially among the non swlm mers women and children Pool of ths kind on
