Michigan territory Logan on the other hand handled yplawn'g twisters in great style and it was seldom that he failed to run them back from five to 15 yards On almost every occasion Hughitt would let by horde of Crimson shouters Wolverines gave an exhibition rooting and standing by their team that was an eye opener to Harvard There so very many lu the Michigan cheering section hut every man and some of the ladles too worked all the time Thus in the amount of din the westerners' showing was made to compare very favorably with that nt Harvard The Wolverines were in their seats early and they made a hit right at the start by giving Har vard a hearty yell When the Yost team came out the Maize and Bluo crowd went wild and during the game it did not Stop shouting single minute Ono thing that made a huge hit here was habit of yell ing tor a Harvard man who had to have time called No sooner was one of Coach Haughton's: galdla tors disabled than Cheer Leader Haft had turned him out a yelp that seemed to be just as enthu siastic as the yells Michigan gave tor her own Harvard quickly took the cue and when a Wolverine was In trouble the short Harvard cheer with the player's name attached roused the echoes Michigan's band was splendid Ar rayed in its gorgeous new uniforms with the yellow lined caped it presented an appearance that caus ed favorable comment on all sides The band wasn't content with lookt ing pretty however It worked In cessantly from the time It arrived on the field blaring "The Victors" until it headed a procession ot Michigan men back to town after the final whistle blew Harvard men hardly could believe that it was a student organization and not seme crack military band hired for the occasion But no mere collec tion of mercenaries could have worked as that band worked You have to have your heart in it to perform in such a fashion Between the halves the Michi gan musicians marched about the field playing Michigan tunes and finally it marched into a formation that made a big block with the legs ot the letter facing Michigan's side of the stadium This just brought down the house and the Crimson contingent clapped and shouted as heartily as the decided advantage and many former foot ball players as well as coaches who were present expressed the opin ion that Michigan erred by not at tempting what appeared to be an easy field goal on the fourth down after rushing the ball inside Har five yard line in the open ing period of the game It was in the finer points xf team play that Michigan lost to Harvard tor player for piayer the Ann Ar bor eleven was fully equal physic ally to the Cambridge combination Collectively however they failed to move with the same cohesion and smoothness shown by the winning team Both elevens played slow football but there was a certain indecision and laxness in handling the ball that was fatal to the Wol chances Individually the Michigan players earned unstinted praise by their clean hard and brilliant Maulbetsch proved to be one of the greatest line breakers seen in the east this season carrying the ball repeatedly through the Harvard line and Into the secondary defense with bullet like rushes that upset tack ler after tackler In these charges he was greatly helped by McHale who ripped open the holes through which Maulbetsch made his gains Hughitt also made repeated gains with his short rushes Inside or out side guard Captain Raynsford passing was excellent and he was in no wise responsible for the several costly fumbles made in the back neuu To start the second half Splawn kicked oft to Bradlee who ran the I ball back to his own 39 yard line I behind perfect interference He eluded the most of the Michigan tacklers and Hughitt and Cochran nitiking up the Wolverine rear guard alone stopped him i Hardwick skirted the Michigan left end for two yards and then punted to the Wolverine seven yard line the hall rolling along the ground with Hughitt watching it The officials ruled tho play a touch down and the Wolverines put the oval in play on the 20 yard mark Harvard spilled the next two plays for no gain and Splawn punted to Hardwick who was downed on his own 37 yard line The Crimson I right halfback failed to gain around the Michigan right end and Rei mann stopped Bradlee after a four yard advance on the following plunge Punt is Bad Hardwick punted poorly and it was ball on her 35 yard line Maulbetsch shot into the Crim bun line but made only one yard Lyons repeated the performance and then Splawn punted to Logan who was brought to earth on his 36 a ra tion Bradlee reeled off five yards but Michigan stopped Jlardwick on the following play for no gain rancke punted but the ball was brought back and given to Michi gan when a Crimson player was de tected tripping Maulbetsch hit the Harvard line for a one yard gain and Lyons fought his way through for four more Maulbetsch was just short of the necessary distance tor the first down when he was stopped after a five yard smash Weston was laid out on this play and time was called till he could be patched up "Muuuy came right back and made it first down oji the next try The ball was on 27 yard linn Lyons advanced for three yards but Michigan was holding tn the line and a 15 yard penalty was asreseed against the Wolver ines Maulbetsch dove into the Crimson line for a flveard gain and Benton was laid out when some one hit him in the ribs A gain of four yards was the ault of next plunge following Play with Maulbetsch carrying the ball on a fake for ward pass formation resulted dls AStrouly when Smith nabbed star for a 10 yard loss Splawn made things safe by punt ing over the goal line Maulbetsch Gets irst Dow Lyons reeled off two yards be fore he was downed and Maul betsch repeated the performance of his mate for three more The came right hack with a first down on the 86 yard lino and then carried the ball again for a four yard gain He evidently hit Interstate Three Cushionist Take on Detroit Represen 70 yards from the point where it was kicked ere it was downed and Michigan was Immediately placed on the defensive The Crimson had what advantage there was in the matter of handling kicks Played Safety irst Both sides were strong for the "safety first" method of letting the ball drop and comparatively few punts were caught Hughitt was instructed to save himself as far as possible anj the Harvard toe artists placed their drives to such gaud advantage that Maulbetsch was seldom able to grab one on the ffy There weie several fumbles of kicks but in each case the man who had muffed recovered with tno more serious loss than that of a few yards Harvard covered punts better than Michigan getting three ahd four men down on all the short ones The game was divided in rather a peculiar way so far as the ad vantage was concerned Michigan made a regular show of the Crim son in the first and third periods while Harvard outplayed her oppo nent in the second and In the fourth though not In so pro nounced a manner The Wolver ines gained 98 yards to seven for the first period and 68 to 13 in the third Al together the westerners negotiated 11 first downs while Harvard got nine ive of these went to Michi gan's credit In the first period Had Cause for Joy Right off the bat Michigan's ad herents had cause for joy ol him this time and when the offi cials sorted out the struggling mass of players the leather had not been advanced the necessary dis tance Again Harvard hud met tnetest with the courage of despera tion and star had set Then Punted Ont of Danger The Crimson of course punted out of danger and took good care not to get into any more In the fourth quarter Harvard seemed to be fresher than her guests and at very of the game she was engaged in a campaign that seem ed likely to result in anotner touch down Taking one of punts on her own 27 yard line the Lyons and Maulbetsch first down on two plays to start the period and the ball wds on 35 yard line It like another advance was when a Wolverine was holding and the ball wa back 15 yards The Michigan backs mussed up the next play woefully three men In succession fumbling vard A double puss with Maulbetsch carrying the ball around the Crim son loft end put the bull bn the 11 yard line the Harvard players being completely fooled by the for mation The Michigan stands were tne scene or a wuo aemunstraiion with tne "Hurry can imploring the fighting Wolverines to score But Harvard spilled the next play for ft ioQ of two Vfirds Meulbet sell retrieved the lost ground and some more too when ihiuuh toe Marvara rignt tacKie tor a six yard advance The fighting Crim son stopped the next play dead il it was the fourth down for Michi gan with the ban stHl four ynrus from the goal line Cantnin Raynsford called for a consultation and then Splawn lrop ped oac as if ror a kick Tne ball was passed to HtiRhiit who in turn passed to Larry But Harvard mussed up the play completely when missed the signals and tried to run instead of forward pass Tacklers Biiug Him Down The Wolverine fullback was pounced upon by three Crimson tacklers for a loss of three yards and the ball went over to Harvard The Crimson rooters Immediately rftSw tin out nf their and went crazy while the Michigan supporters sank back disappointed itn on ner own seven yard Hne Harvard was penalized five yards for off side play in the next formation and the oval went back to the two yard murk With the goal line again in imminent peril Hardwick immediately drop ped back for a punt sending the ball far out of the Harvard danger tn th 43 vard 1in HutrhiH caught the pigskin and was downed by Coolidge before he got started pet the Wallace was Injured In this I am lald out and while he wa and the Michigan rooters scored a lepalred James went in tor tremendous hit with the Harvard i A cohorts by giving Crimson cen Respite the fact that he had been ter nine cheers It wrs the first himself into the Harvard time the Maize and Blue men had tj waY 30 the field had a chance to show their cour Maulbetsch came ripbt back and tesv in thft Hnrvnril hnnrh at It had been badly hurt and Bigelow replaced him On tho first plunge Bradice made it first down on 30 yard line In the piny Splawn was in jured and the Harvard rooters had their chance to return the Mich igan courtesy by yelling for the through the Crimson line on the next play and threw Hardwick for a loss with a pretty tackle The Harvard backs got mixed up on the following pl and only one yard Tries orward Paas Right here Harvard tried the first forward pass of the game and it worked beautifully Hardwick shot the ball to Smith and the play was on the Michigan 19 yard line This successful execution of the play which Michigan had thought all her own seemed to take the heart out of the Wolverines tost long enough for the Crimson to get her touch down rancke smashed past the Mich igan left tackle for a gain of two yards and followed suit with a plunge which took the ball to the It Wnc fha fhiril with only one foot to no were im hold the Crimson Trumbull pretty hard in thia smash for the Crimson field cap tain took time out tor repairs Once again Maulbetsch cam through with a Michigan first down Smith being the man who prevented hia going all the way through Iyons was stopped dead on the next plunge and Cochran took time out Michigan was on her second march up the field and the Wol verine rooterg were going wild with delight On a fake kick for mation Maulbetsch smashed Into the Harvard line for 1 tour yard gain and followed suit with a smasn which made It first down on the Crimson 13 yard line On the next play in which he made three yards the Michigan battering sensational If It worked she could have saved the day and if it hadn nothing more would have been lost than was gone already The work ot the Michigan ends was not up to standard though Ben ton contributed a lew good tackles and Dunne who went in for him later was very active Both Wolverine flankers were blocked olt entirely too often Staatz now and then smeared a play In finished style but in gen eral he was not reliable Reimann was defensive star He played a really wonderful game making more than half the tackles It seemed and being harder to tool than any other Wolverine He upheld the honor of the left side of the line in fine style and did a good deal more work than anybody had a right to expect of him It was very early to see that Har vard's Brie was more experienced than Michigan's and this experience is what told on the two occasions when the Wolverines apparently were about to ecore The Crimson for wards outguessed and outfought when the battle raged under tne goal poets ne wolver ines couldn keep their opponents at bay at the very times that It was most desirable they should dl so In strength the Michigan forwards easily held their own but they were outclassed in the tricks of the trade They failed utterly to open up holes In the two last fights Cochran Defensive Star Big Bill Cochran Is entitled to credit for his fine work In opening holes for Maulbetsch Repeatedly he shoved sainebody out of the way to let the German dreadnaught through and Parsons who was v's a vis with Cochran when Michigan had the ball finally had to quit the game on account of the rough hand lnc he received One fact of which Michigan men have reason to be proud of Is that their team fought all the time Op posed as It was to an eleven that probably will be champion ot theast this fall and that is made up al most entirely of rugged experienced men the western boys refused to grant Harvard an Inch that was not earned In the last quarter the Wol verines seemed to be tired but they were Just as game as ever and they might have stopped the Crimson avalanche before It reached the goal line even If the whistle handn't ter minated hostilities when it did Defeated but a long way from disgraced ie a fair way to sum It up A bunch of green men who gave the best It had were forced to bow before an adversary which had Justhat finesse which comes with foot ball experience It was a good fight all the way through and there Is honor
