22 Tint DETROIT REE PRESS SUNDAY OCTOBER 21 '1917 PABT Wolverines Believe That Nebraska Will Be Hard To Beat One Week Hence A 4 AAA AAA A A A A 'A A AAA' AAA CORNHUSKERS HAVE WEALTH MATERIAL SEVEN LAST VETERANS RETURNING TO SCHOOL AT LINCOLN THIS SEASON YOST EARS NEBRASKANS MORE THAN HE DOES THE TEAM OR PENNSY Mentor Has an Idea That Cornhuskers Are Coming to Ann Arbor Prepared to Give Wolverines Battle of Their Lives Next Saturday Aftesnoon Special to The ree Press Ann Arbor Mich Oct 20 Ths University of Michigan's football schedule is half over now that MA has fallen into the heap of the vanquished along with Caso Mt Union Kalamazoo Normal and the University of Detroit ive games remain to be played and the hardest of these accord ing to Coach Yost comes next Sat urday when the University of Ne braska Journeys to Ann Arbor' for its first tilt in many years The Cornhuskers have a powerful elev en and Yost fears them more than Penn Cornell or Northwestern The Kalamazoo college tilt which follows th Nebraska gome Is not expected to be a tough contest for although thia aggregation took the measure of A it is not nor has it evrr been considered any where near on a par with Michi gan The college may surprise the Wolverines by bringing up a team of stars as the Normal did and as 'the University Of Detroit did but Yost Is looking forward to the game as merely a resting place between the Nebraska and Cornell games Displayed Good Eleven Jn the five games that have been played Michigan has shown a pow erful eleven heavy fast and pos sessing some stars of the highest 'caliber Although at times espe cially in the Detroit game the at tack Jost Its punch the bftckfield is considered as strong as any that has worn the blue in recent years There is no man on the team who can equal the wonderful Jimmie Craig nor is there a line plunger of the class of Maiilbetsch but taken collectively there Is more power In this aggregation than there was In the combinations which boasted these stars The punch to the attack returns this week in the person of Sparks who since the Kalamazoo Normal tilt has been laid up with injuries Ife is expected back in a uniform Monday and his wonder ful end runs bls hard smashes off tackle his punting and general all around held generalship will put new pep into the whole team and give the men the necessary im petus to wonderful playing Sparks expects to last the rest of the sea son now that ho is back ana if he can do so stock will take decided upward bound Will Help Sparks Out To work with Sparks in the back field Yost has Wslmann Cohn Rye roemko and Genebach The first three of these are the possible first choices of the Michigan mentor for his regular backfield although the wonderful fight and defensive play of roemke in the Detroit game may win him a regular berth in place of Rve who has been absent from the game for so long a period that he is still somewhat Ignorant of the defensive part of his half back job The slowest man in this back field is Weimanji and once gets his 193 pounds In motion aud spreads his long legs bo is a hard man to stop short of a five yard gain Welmann has looked slow all season but he really covers a lot of ground with his big strides and he can hold his own with al most anyone in the backfield Cohn Is another powerful man with plen ty of weight and lots of speed and fight Cohn is a good defensive player Any one of these mon Is a capa ble hurler or receiver of the for ward pass and since it is expected that the aerial attack will form a large part nf offensive these men will do a lot to help along the general strength of the eleven The fact that Yost resorted to for ward pass plays against Detroit shows where he will put his re liance in tho tough places in the big games 'Will Ahl The return of Sparks will aid the punting greatly Weiniann who has been doing the booting since Sparks was forced from the game is capable of getting off long punts but his ends are scarcely ever able to cover them properly As As sistant Coach Douglass declared Hparks can make any end look good when he punts his kicks being high enough to enable the Hank ers to get down under them In rapid style Yost has never taken kind to a long low kicker of the Shiverlck style but has always fa vored a man who can get his kicks high no matter if they are 10 to yards shorter than the kicks of another man In the last Minne sota game on erry field Yost smeared open field run ning by having Lnwton kick in place of Thompson lnwton got his kicks high and the Minnesota star was covered with blue jerseys when the punts landed In his hands Advance dope on the Nebraska eleven was received from MacGiu his who coached the freshman eleven last year MacGinnls watch ed the Cornhuskfir aggregation play a week ago and sent a diagram of their formations to Yost who has been drilling the scrubs in them Assistant Coach Douglass left ri day for Lincoln Neb to watch tho western eleven play and he will be back Monday morning with a lot of information under his hat ear hl Defense Yost Is not fearing tho strength of his defense nearly bo much as ha is worrying over the "gimp" in his backfield The strength shown by the Wolverine forwards In keep ing Detroit University from a touchdown twice when tho ball was in the shadow nf tho goal post has made the situation a bright one while the return of Sparks ought tn add the jump to the backfieldwhich will bring It up to the expectations Nebraska Is known to have seven veterans the team which will face Michigan and these men are of the fast rangy heavy type tho kind of players which make for the best elevons these days Yost coached Nebraska In 1898 and has always looked forward to these games with a great deal of relish Jt is only natural that he should consider a team be once coached as the strongest opponent for the sea son Michigan's line though still some what weakened by Injuries ought to be hitting along In its top stride In another week There is plenty of weight and power in the for ward wall and the men when play ing together form a strong defen sive and a powerful offense Boyd Is tho star of the line hla play be ing the feature of tho Detroit game Tills boy came to Michigan abso lutely ignorant of football and in two years Yost lias made a won derfully aggressive player of him Severil times in the Detroit game Boyd broke through smeared the pass to of the backs and then recovered tho ball Twice this play by Boyd saved thd situation when It was beginning to look desperate for the Wolverines All Good Linemen Lambert Culver Weske and Good sell are all good linemen Lambert has been putting up a stellar game at center both on offense and de fense and If ho puts on tho weight this week that he declared he would he ought to be a star before the season ends He is a fighter and although he has not played much football in the past two years he has shown a knowledge of the game and an aptitude for messing up plays Though tho first half of the Michigan schedule has shown Mich igan weak in ends Yost expects to havo tho problem solved in time for the Nebraska tilt Goetz and Ban ish who are now the first choices of the Michigan couch are good players In tho making Goetz has always played In the line up to this season and Yost has had his hands full teaching the big boy the es sential of a flanking job Goetz is learning rapidly however and Yost ought to have a star In him soon Banish Is an experienced halfback and although ho wont Into the De troit game after only a few min utes practice at the position he acquitted himself well while play ing Haniah is on the hospital list at the present time but will be back in condition for Nebraska TOOLOS GETS CHANCE WITH THE Giant Greek Meets Lewis Next Wednesday on the Moose Temple Mat Tofolos the Greek wonder has been showing so strongly in the preliminary matches at the Moose temple that the public Is anxious to see him test his skill with "Strangler" Lewis and so this Wed nesday the big fellow will trade holds with the Kentucky bred champion Because of his enormity alone Tofolos Is a tough customer as it Is extremely difficult say experts to secure leverage on his bulky per sonality Then tou he Is so heavy that If he gets on top he saps the strength of Ills opponent by just lolling on him Lewis under estimate the worth of Tofolos and will train harder for him than he did for Dr Roller for Tofolos Is a tnuhr younger and far stronger foe although perhaps not ns well versed In tho game as the physician grap pier A Motorcycle fandom has right to expect a great race at the State fair grounds track Sunday afternoon when 17 riders who are classed among the best In the middle west circle the dirt oval 100 times in a century race for the Michigan state championship Saturday three new entries were added to the list two Detroiters Earl MacComber and Running and Edwin Taub of Toledo bring ing the total number of riders to 17 Six of these boys come hero from other states In an efrort to out speed the local title aspirants and the Detroit Motorcycle as sociation is to be congratulated on the preliminary success of the meet in total entries which points to some fine competition ffay Break Record It will not be at all surprising if the fans who are in attendance see a new record set for the 100 mlle distance There are two reasons why this expectation may be realized irst Jim Davis pres ent holder of the 25 mlle mark for dirt tracks will compete on a new high powered Indian and he is out to add to his laurels by surpassing the present record set by his fel low townsman Ray Creviston which is 84 minutes 402 5 seconds Secondly the track will be In fine shape barring more rain and Davis will be opposed by such fast men as Don Klark and Archie McLean of Detroit: red Meyers of Akron Charles Blaine of Ellsworth Ill red Helnikeman of Cleveland and Hazen Kamp of Chicago These are the men picked to set the pace and It is bound to be a hot one If the machines do not get balky Detroit has a fine chance to cap ture the honors from these out siders with Don Klark Archie Mc Lean and Henry Dougherty as Its star entries while some of the oth er local men are dangerous and well mav be considered dark horses Hut this trio has had the benefit of ex perience on both dirt and board tracks and for this reason Is fa vored Klark formerly held the 100 mlle mark and still has the mile record of 49 seconds On the local track to his credit Archie McLean set a Canadian record of 48 seconds recently and is a newcomer In first flight ranks but none the leas dangerous Also I0 Mlle Race This race at the 100 mlle distance will follow one of 10 miljes which will be the opening race of the af program and will start at 2:15 All of the riders in the dis tance affair are also entered In tho first combat The century race Is run on tho firize money system special cash purses being given for the
