Injury That Will Mean His Loss to Eleven BY A BATCHELOR LANSING Mich October Michigan removed a blot from her escutcheon this afternoon The process of erasure was nov easy by any means but it was none the less complete and for the first time in a year Michigan men are able to speak of A without feeliug a tug at their heart strings or the Wolverines today beat the fighting East Lansing team by a score of 3 to 0 Lorry Spiawn is the man to thank for the points that brought the victory and paid up for Michigan's defeat of 1913 Late In the fourth and final quarter after the two teams had battled like tigers with out either being able to cross Its goal line the tall full back kicked a field goal from the 20 yard line It wan the only way that the Maize and Blue could win for the Aggies positively refused to permit a touchdown Michigan had two chances to score by fighting her way across the final chalk mark but both times she found it impossible to breach the walls the home team's splendid defense Wa Great Battle At first glance it may seem to those who did not pee the game that this was rather a email score Some Michigan rooters will be dis appointed that the Volverineb did not run up a a lot of points and make their victory even more pro nounced than Was A season But anybody who viewed this desperate and even struggle which raged up and down the Lansing gridiron is willing to con cede that any victory over Mack team is a big one It took every ounce of strength every drop of fighting blood and the ultimate limit of cunning to win the game In fact it took all these things to stave off defeat for the Aggies were con stantly dangerous and once were cheated of an almost certain touch down by timekeeper's watch They had the ball on Michigan a five yard line with three more down to push it over when the first half ended Another play might have meant victory for them Two more almost surely would have done so for they had Michi gan on the run and there was no stopping them This was the only time that the home defenders had the ball within the real danger zone but they gained a lot of ground all through the game distinctly outplaying the Wolverines in the first half and never were beaten until the final whistle blew Toward" the (To It was well along in the final quar ter when the Michigan men who having once staved off defeat now seemed confident of a tie got their points They had begun to find themselves in the third quarter and played the better football of the two teams in this and the fourth But thy couldn't do any consistent gaining against that game and in telligent Aggie defense and even the most sanguine hardly dared hope for anything better than that the game would end scoreless In strength the Aggies were fully a match for their visitors and ordinary rushing tactics never would have beaten them Convinced of this fact Tommy Hughitt called for a forward pass threw the ball to Lyons and a gain of 30 yards re sulted when the right end caught the ball Johnny had a clear field and a touchdown in sight when he stumbled and fell But he had done enough to insure his teams vic tory ny the ariel route The ball was Inside the Aggies 15 yard line when Lyons stumbled and the break of the flame had come Three times Michigan hurled them back tor gains so small that there seemed no chance to make a first down Hughitt wasn't taking any risk here so he called on Splawn Larry responded splendid ly standing on the enemy 20 vard line and putting a drop kick right squarely between the pots But six time remained when shot went home and the delirious Michigan rooters knew that barring a miracle the honor of the Maize and Blue was saved A began a desperate assault as soon as the ball was kicked off and gained a big piece of territory Ixng before Michigan was really manacled however she braced and forced a kick and thus took away the final chance raid Heavy Penalty i But Michigan to win with out paying a frightful price for vic tory Jn the last three minutes of game fate exacted a toll that was more than just and more than any loyal Wolverine could have paid if given the chance to express his preference While stopping one or those frenzied dying apasms by A Tommy Hughitt sustained a dislocated elbow and internal hurts and was led to Hi sidelines bv a doctor who attended him on the field It is feared that
