6A WWW.FREEP.COM THURSDAY, DEC.29,2011 Headlines WASHTENAW COUNTY Norovirus is going around, officials warn Norovirus, a gastrointestinal illness, is circulating in Washtenaw County, the county Public Health Department warned. Several outbreaks of the illness have been reported in the past month, according to the county department. The department did not say where the outbreaks were reported. Noroviruses are highly contagious viruses that cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Some people also experience headache, low-grade fever and body aches.

Symptoms usually last 24-48 hours. According to the department, norovirus is transmitted by eating food that was prepared or handled by another ill person, by touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching the mouth, or by having contact with aperson who is infected and showing symptoms. To prevent spreading the illness, officials recommend washing hands frequently, staying home if ill, disinfecting with a bleach-based solution and not preparing food for others if ill. Anyone who believes an illness occurred after eating at a specific restaurant can call Environmental Health at 734-2223800. REGION Listeria prompts recall of cheeses The state Department of Agriculture has announced the recall of two cheese products from Green Cedar Dairy in Dearborn because of possible contamination with Listeria bacteria.

The recall covers packages saying All Natural Ackawi Cheese and All Natural Chives Cheese with a sell by date up to July 1, 2012. The products are distributed in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. The department said the Michigan Department of Community Health and the Wayne County Public Health Department are investigating two recent cases of human listeriosis in people who may have been exposed to Green Cedar Dairy products. The agriculture department says its lab has found Listeria in samples of All Natural Chives Cheese. The victims include cousins Renisha Landers, 23, an assembly-line worker at a Chrysler plant in Sterling Heights, and Demesha Hunt, 24, of Detroit, who left behind a 10-month-old daughter. They were found dead in the trunk of Chrysler 300 on Dec. 19 in the 14900 block of Promenade.

Police said there were no obvious signs of trauma to the bodies, and toxicology results are pending. On Sunday, the bodies of the two other women were found in the trunk of a 1997 Buick Le- Sabre parked in a garage in the 14900 block of Lannette. After eight years as one of the dogs in the K9 unit of the Oakland County Office, Rudy the German shepherd now spends his days relaxing. He has the run of his family home and 9-acre yard in Fowlerville.

And life is good when he plays with what only a dog could consider the best toy in the world a green tennis ball. that what retirement is all about? For the dogs in the canine unit, work is often grueling and intense. Rudy has chased down robbers and thieves, stopped suicides, tracked down marijuana, heroin and cocaine. Once, he ran four miles after a guy who ditched his car and ran off from a traffic stop. And even though Rudy has gracillis degenerative muscle disease, he still trots to the front door every day, hoping to hop into the SUV, when his handler Deputy Dave Roddy, 42, puts on his uniform and leaves for the night shift.
