Telegraphic reports of the Brighton trotting meeting make it appear thatthe first day under the novel condi tions imposed by that association was an eminently successful one Tho ob ject1 of the changes is to make the racing faster and to kill the laying up evil In the two in three events the winners of first and second heats go to the stable after their victories and the third heat ends 'the race The heat winner negotiating the fast est mile gets first money second and third being decided the same way ourth money is decided by the regu lar summary In the three in flve races a horse must win one of the first Hires heats or go to the stable when the fourth is called The association bars heat betting The changes as a whole arc more radical than any adopted by any other association and are better based than the half way efforts at racing reform that have been offered elsewhere 4 3 a dr 0 0 batted 3 4 5 1 0 2 2 10 ox 3: 4 Dutlicrl 4 Glea'nm 4 4 4 ro 1 ro AB 5 0 5 0 4 6 43 42 43 3 1 2 5 Rube Waddell at Bennett Park terday displayed his famed propensity for hogging the honors' of ball games in which he officiates' In this he was successful and then again he wasn't He succeeded in winning almost sin gle handed a contest that ran tor thirteen innings and in which no tally was scored other than the one that he himself coined from a long three bagger in the closing period But the players of both teams insisted on squeezing in for' some of the glory accepting 115 chances that were ot tered in the thirteen periods without a single misplay The Athletics gave a steady and consistent exhibition Detroit played brilliant ball pulling Siever out of three bad places and by theirfinc fielding prolonging a contest that looked to be taken irom them in several innings before the fatal oile Up to the ninth inning Siever pitched an article of ball that was perhaps a trifle better than that offered by Waddell though not so flasny Hq was getting no strike outs but he was one better on hits and he had not handed out a pass In the ninth he weakened and the Athletics began to find him Waddell on the other hand was better at the finish that at me start He had just as much speed and better control All through tie game he worked like a man that was jolly ing things along every hit that was made off him as well as three of the five passes that he gave coming with two hands gone Only two chances wefe offered to Detroit to win and neither was avail ed of The first was in the opener when with two gone Casey beat out an infield hit He stole second and made third on drive into left The hit was too short to score Casey so Barrett went down to draw the throw Casey made a dash for the plate on the play of Barrett but' was nailed by a return throw inence until tne ntntn opportunity Elberfeld ninth with one sone ond out put him at third Barrett walked and stole but McAl lister hit out of the infield Casey got on with none out in the twelfth but no one could get him by second The first and ninth innings were the only periods in which De troit visited Lave cushion Siever had men going one two three in the early stages Hart sel singled in the fourth with none gone but died on the sacks Waddell and Hartsei hit with one 6ut in the sixth and were stranded In the ninth if looked like all day ultz and Davis both hitting safely with one out Lave Cross was purposely pass ed and Elberfeld started a double play off grounder spoiling this chance Schreck and Waddell both hit safely in the tenth and both were left Unlucky was he thirteenth arid Mr' Waddell was the hoodoo With ona gone he reached a high one and smashed it out between Harley and Barrett Richard had been cutting pff two base hits all day but this was by iim Jt hit left field fence near the score board on the first bound and by the time it was in Waddell was at' third Hartsei walked and ultz went out to Gleason Davis the las chance got one by Beck into fight scoring Waddell Lave Cross be declared the winner Under the agreement made there will be few of the usual vexatious technicalities which have been partly responsible for the fact that these qualities have not been satisfactorily determined There is to be no time allowance oh measurement and the boats are to be sailed by the best men to be obtained regardless of whether they may be termed professional or ama teurs The rule as to amateurs as applied by the judges at the recent Put in Bay races was what prevented any decision at those events The agreement for the match signed yes terday is as follows: Aug 11 1902 is agreed that the yachts Detroit and Cadillac shall sail a match race at the Tawas Beach regatta for a special prize of $200 and a championship flag offered by Mr Hawks This match shall be sailed off in the regatta races provided for by the Tawas Beach Yachting Association on August 15 16 17 1902 both yachts to be entered in these regular events and their match to be determined by the regu lar judges of those events who shall de termine the relative positions of these two yachts The race to be boat for boat and under their regular sails as used at Chi cago last year and either may be sailed by either Corinthian or professional I McLEOD or Detroit 7 SHAW or Cadillac it will be one of the greatest races ever seen on fresh said Mr Gillman last evening boats met at Chi cago but the result was not definite enough to satisfy the Detroit yachtsmen and the Put in Bay racing was equally unsatisfac tory This time things have been ar ranged in such a way that the argument ousht to be settled? Th character of the men backing each boat is such that a fair sportsman like contest is guaranteed and look for a fine "The yachts started for Tawas Beach last by rank letcher Bach with his Steam they nee1 tOw or My furnTsh it Ietcher will be In position io Total BOWLING ANAT'VSTS Balls Maidens Wkts Runs 3 Aitken 96 7 A SECOND INNING Dr Tye Johnson Beddow rerun Stuart POSTING Babes Uncovered the Leather Cleveland August 11 Cleveland won a slugging match from Baltimore to day making twenty four hits eight of them twd baggers Hale lasted but one inning and Wiltse was equally easy Wright with a rest opened for Cleveland but had neither speed nor control and was succeeded Clark an amateur from Wooster score: CLEVELAND 3 1 Hapover August The final round of the international chess tournament was played to day Gott schall won against Levin Tscriigorin lost to Mason Pillsbury beat Swider ski Janowski beat Popiel Gunsberg went down before Wolf and Cohn and Suechting drew Atkins beat Marshal Napier won from Olland and Mieses defeated Bardeleben The urize taken asl follows: 3 i Janowski first prize $300 Pillsbury second prize $225 Atkins third nrize $150 Mieses fourth Napier and Wolf divide fifth and sixth nriztS $6875 each Tsehigorlnw seventh $6250 Olland eighth nd last INNING Beddow 10 Beddow 0 9 0 13 $24 00 $35 20 1 760 $32oo Sparks Weakened In the Ninth Chicago August It was an even play for eight innings to day but Sparks weak ened in the ninth and a single two passes and a long fly gave Chicago the game by one run Jones' batting and fielding and great cutches by Dougherty Stahl and Mcrtes were the features Score 4 I A I AB Jonesm Green Daviss Mertesl Isbelll Daly 2 Stranff3 Griffith Marblehead Mass August Ik The re gatta with which the Eastern aJrt clu entertained the New York 1 acht Club day was one of the largest yachting ever held in Massachusetts bay jn started in a light breeze from and had not sailed more than an boJ fore a fierce 'squall from the sout caught them disabling sevemi an masting one The large gered through it however anu had a gra race the Rainbow leading the way She won by the short lrPnU 21 seconds In the schooner class the bi mina won again over the Muriel three yachts started Terms of Sale Positively Cash Purchases held until wanted We close at i jn on Saturdays during August and a large assortment ot other cakes fresh every day AU kinds' of fountain drinks the' purest 1 lee cream At Our ountain Order ice cream for your Sunday dinner Yrom us WAGNER 'Baking Co 327 Woodward Ave The Grand Trunk system has perfect train service for St Law reuce River tours Montreal Queberi Saguenay Portland and Whit'e Mouni tains Summer Resorts full particulaiU City Office 124 Woodward New seaside Trotting Brighton Beach under favorablO au spices The track was fast and 5000 spectators saw the sport The big feature of the card was the $10000 Benner Memorial purse for trotters of the 2:12 class for which there were 12 starters The blind horse Rythmic who has won all his races down the line from Detroit was the choice at $50 to $40 but eventually sold at 2 to 1 on He won In three straight heats The 2:15 phee was on what is named the novelty plan pleted in three heats the the the and while the fourth goes to the horse holding the next position In reality each heat is a distinct race Prince Direct was the favorite at 2 to 1 in ail three heats but he was not able to get to the front till the third The fastest race of the day was the 2:06 pace for which Dan was the favorite at 2 to 1 taking first and third heats Under the Brighton Beach rule only the two heat winners could start yet the deciding heat was the sensation ot the day The two pacers went to the thfee quarter pole to gether when Dan broke so badly that anny Dillard distanced him Under the rules anny Dillard will walk over for her third heat Summaries: 2:15 CLASS PURSE $1500 Novelty race each heat a race horse malting fastest time winning nrst money rduiut vr um in uy voiiiiii jiier (Snow) Carl Wilkes ch by Wilkes Nut wood (A McDonald) urince uircct oix oy mrect (Mc Henry) i Alice Mapes (Snyder) Schley Pointer (Nuckols) I Sutieet blk (Benyon) Baroletta (Miller) I Mercury Wilkes ch (Devy) I Josh br (McMahon) 2:11 2:09 2:12 2:12 CLASS TROTTING (BONNER MORI PURSE $10000 Rythmic br by Oakland Baron'1 (Hudson) 1 Lady Thisbee blk (Kenny) 3 Major Delmar (A McDon ald) 2 Alice Carr blk (Garrison) 5 Miss Whitney (A McDonald) 6 ieoia iBauuuers) Dan 'I (Manville) Alcy blk (Lazell) Silver Sign br (McHenry) Bells Kuser br (Rites) Alfred Starr hr (Cahill) Ruth (Miller) 2:09 2:09 2:12 2:14 CLASS TROTTING PURSE $1500 Novelty same conditions as first race A lit?
