about tlhe time when there was a prospect of' a great deal more baseball and much less liti gation in connection with the national sport the magnates have again broken loose and have begun a line of tactics calculated to further loosen their weakening grasp upon the public By this time it should be plainly evident to the men who con duct the business end of baseball that those Who follow the sport have' sick ened of the complications that have tied up the game this spring and that have necessarily lessened the interest in the sport And yet the past week has noted a great revival in activity along legal lines John I Rogers and James A Hart are mainly responsible for the latest developments Col Rogers through the action that he has taken to Induce the Ohio courts to declare Lajoie and Bernhard in contempt and Mr Hart through his declaration of intent to begin suit against t'he American Ieague for its refusal to turn over the pick of its playing talent to his club The St Louis American club threat ens to add to the present troubles though just how much ground for be lief there is in the stories told of that hope of securing Wag ner and O'Connor is notyet known It Is certain however that If these men are induced to jump the Pitts burg club will make a legal fight that will be more deterrpined than any yet made and that will be better conduc ed than most of those of the past It is to be hoped that St Louis does not think seriously of grabbing the two men The action cannot be justified any more than wasrthe taking of Harper who Is legally the property of the St Louis National club The American League cannot afford to welcome any more deliberate contract jumpers The only justification thus far offered for the alleged attempt on the part of the St Louis management is that Dreyfuss 'has been dickering for services for next sea son If he has he has been anting within his rights There is no earth ly reason why Tie should not attempt to secure any American League star whose contract will expire this fall Col action however is rather painful His attempts to make the Pennsylvania decree cover the whole earth look a bit ridiculous It is idle to attempt to forecast the de cree of a court of law but it seems hnrdly probable that the Ohio bench will Interfere It will be remem bered however that the Detroit club officers when they sent to Philadelphia to attempt to secure Lajoie were con vinced that there was an excellent chance for Rogers to gain something outside of his own state bv continu ing his procedure against the second baseman Col Rogers does not hid his club any by course he is pur suing and has already injure its drawing powers In its own city by his actions of the past He Is mak ing no end of bother besides spending much good money to secure a player that he might easily have gotten in much more simple manner There was a difference of a few hundred dollars only between Lajoie and Rogers The terms were exorbitant' of course But he was in a position to dictate and Rogers would have been wiser to submit Lajoie would have drawn more than the difference in the two figures in a very few gaihjs The attendance figures from Cleveland during the first week of cn pxuve Lina talk is given much less atten tion He has dilly dalleyed too long He get Roscoe Miller last year and he never saw fit to bring action in that case So far as known he has never made any formal demand for El berfeld and Isbell the men whom he wishes this year The contract under which he says he will sue is an old instrument executed in May two years ago and has been much discussed in the past It was the instrument under which Comlskey's team then a mem ber of a league that recognized the National agreement was allowed enter Chicago Under its provisions conflicting Saturday and Sunday dates to be avoided nine was not to be known by the name of the city that it represented and Hart was to have his choice of any two players in the league each season pay ment of 1000 being all that neces sary on his part when he made the demand for the man Detroit would make a lot of money turning over its stars to settle debts owed to Hart by the White Sox De Haas Rob ison is said to hold a contract some what similar to in connection with the taking of Cleveland territory Mr Robison has said nothing about litigation in connection with his con tract He probably had all of the le gal procedure that he cared for In St Louis where he was twice nut to sleep by the courts In connection with the Wallace and Harpejcases With the season nearly one third gone it would be better for the mag nates to let the documents rest awhile and pay "more attention to the playing end of the game That's what the fans sickened of the whole round of suits and injunctions and applications have done In the National there is a pennant chase that is not sufficiently exciting to be engrossing but in the American the hunt for the flag is al most as exhilarating as it was a month ago White Sox are threat ening to change this by their great run of home victories the teams being spread out more now than they have been at any time pince the season opened men have struck their stride' and their chances for a third pennant on the present showing look remarkably bright The team is not hitting as well now as it will later on so that the effort that will be necessary to check the mad rush to the flag pole is easily apparent Detroit has played some fine base ball since it came home its efforts in all of the games only excepting the second Baltimore engagement being all that the fans could ask for The team was dutluckcd in the home run battle of last Sunday it resting for a chance to decide which nine should be the victor The first game that Baltimore won' went its way on bad baseball of that there no question The loss of game was de plored but it was a well earned Balti more victory Detroit hit Shields often enough but it couldn't hit him to safe territory The fielding as inxmost of the games this home series was above reproach and pitching was after the first Inning gilt edged When games are lost as this one was the standing is of course but the defeats do nrt call for adverse criticism Just now the club is playing the fastest game that it has shown since the season opened It has still a long run of games at home and continuance of its present speed with a continuance of the spirit the rooters have recently shown will bring the team well up in the first division before it starts out on the road again The Tigers are hitting better now than has been the case in earlier weeks of the season and are running the bases speedily and headily So good a judge as Connie Mack man ager of the Athletics says of the De troit nine: the present composition of the different clubs In the American League Detroit ami Chicago lead the other organizations in playing the most scientific game The players on these two teams are very fast and know the game thoroughly They will keep their opponents guessing contin ually as to what to look for when liext at bat They will often hit the ball hard when it would appear as though a sacrifice hit would be the best play and bunting when least expected It is by these means that many games are won that otherwise would be Little lias been heard of late about the agitation against Sunday ball in Detroit though they are still battling over this issue up the state Thus far the Sunday ball people have had all the better of the argument Ex Judge Person has announced his intention to ask the governor to remove Sheriff Hammond from office if the latter does not prevent the game advertised for Sunday at Lansing This past week a case was tried in that town in which a lint player was charged with violating the law in participating in a Sunday game The player was acquitted It is difficult to induce pop ular sympathy with movements against the Sabbath day game in this section of the country at least Spring wells people have not manifested any great opposition to the Sunday games and certaiply had no 'cause for com plaint last week when the saloons were all closed tight and the base ball crowd melted out of the township with great speed as soon as the con test was ended On this Sabbath day there will prob ably be more noise than nas been heard at any of the earlier contests and should Washington make it a fighting game it is pretty certain that there1 will be sufficient cheering and blaring to almost bring the game into the realm of nuisance The opening Washington game promises to be next RHEUMATISM Almost as Common in Summer as in Winter GOT PROMPT RELIE Louisville Ky April I 1902 Gentlemen or the past twenty three years I havejtised in my this day and this game Mr Postal has never made any proud boasts about the ability of Evart brass band to win medals at a musical festival but he does maintain that no organization in the world of similar size can exceed it in noise productive ness Hence the battle of the oppos ing clans of rooters at to game promises to exceed in Interest the struggle on the diamond 'Pittsburg continues to hold its easy lead in the National though it is no secret that the team has already dropped more games than some of its devoted boosters expected to see it lose during the entire season Just why is not apparent The luck of baseball be looked to to take ten games in a season from a pennant team no matter how brilliantly it may play even if that brilliant work be done in every contest A few defeats will do the Pirates good success hav ing gone to the head of Clarke's men On one occasion at least the Pirates have turned to dirty bail 'when they saw a game slipping away from them and this has brought upon the team a roast from about every sporting writer of any prominence in Pitts burg A few more defeats and a few more roasts may bring the leaders down from their pedestal Nothing has beep heard lately of that $5000 side bet for a series of ten games between Pittsburg and any American league team Mr Dreyfuss made the proposi tion and both Hedges of St Louis and Connie Mack of Philadelphia have offered to take up the wager Connie used Dreyfuss rather roughly in acknowledging his readiness to take up the challenge remarking that in his opinion' it is a shame that Pitts burg is not in a major league and arguing that the Pirates would have a fighting chance for the first division were they members of the American That the McGovern Corbett bout will be allowed in New London the place now selected for it does not seem to be fully assured Conferences between Promoter Crowley the authorities of the Connecticut city are the order at this time The State Law and Or der League threatens to take a hand in the game Mayor Dart is with club and has assured them that while a prize fight will not be tol erated there will be no opposition to a scientific glove contest which is of Course what this bout like all other ring affairs is intended to be There be a test of strength between Mayor Dart and the law and order people with the possibility of the sheriff and the governor being called on to stop the go It is asserted posi tively that even if the fight is allowed to go on the society will have repre sentatives at the ringside prepared to call on the officers to stop the bout at the first demonstration of brutality As there are various opinions as to the exact stage of roughness that may be declared brutality this declaration is not calculated to reassure the sport ing gentlemen who contemplate long trips to witness the bout so that the announcement of the law and order people may have its effect on the gate There has been some talk of a change ir the date of the other cham pionship contest that of the heavy weights but it is probable that noth ing will come of it The men are slat ed to box in July but both of the fighters would like to have tho match go over for a time The club will stick to the original date however believ ing that any change made would prove costly to it This bout is expected to prove to be a money winner in itself and to make possible an even greater coih getter in the shape of a meeting between the winner and Corbett Jef fries and Corbett are both Califor nians both popular at the coast and would of course draw well itz simmons and Corbett are ancient ri vals and fotmen and would be equally good Corbett Is now a dead one in the fistic sense but would doubtless prove to be a good gate attraction with either of the men who will fight in July The former champion really believes he has a chance with Jeffries and will rush to his doom if given opportunity by the coast people Root and Carter have both been anxious to meet but he laughs away such a match saying that it Is the championship or nothing with him in which he shows very good sense Young Corbett still keeps the sport ing chroniclers guessing with his many changes of dates He has can celled Abe Attell and now it is an nounced that he will meet that youth in Denver on June 27 on the heels of this comes the announcement that the champion has signed to box Broad in Philadelphia on June 28 In ahead of either of these two bouts there is supposed to be a meeting with Joe Bernstein slated for Corbett One date that was set for this was June 18 What the champion will do is now never predicted from one day to an other by the wise man He ought to hire somebody to edit his route card and to look out for his business af fairs Over on the other side the fighters are getting ready for the coronation week festivities Torn Sharkey is re ported to be so confident of defeating Ruhlin that he has already booked a tour that Includes the more important places in' Ireland Johnny Gorman who Is In the same stable and who meets Tommy Ryan will accompany Sharkey on his trip It 1b a fine bunch of second raters that will pose as America's best at the English carnival It will be something to wonder at if there is not a lot of framing up with a consequent cleaning up by wise men of the American colony before these bouts are concluded Tommy eltz who Men Chicago Ha Thirty five Who Have Paaaed the Ediaon't Newest Storaae Battery A WOMAN AS A CHAU EEUSE 8 a IIETHER women may be I trusted to drive automobiles WW remains an unexhaustible subject so much more diffi cult to decide as long as daily occur rences throw some doubt on the fitness of men in this respect Some time it will becomS self evident that women are better fit to drive automobiles which never require muscular effort beyond a certain limit well within the strength of any adult person than to drive horses that are liable to be rme frenzied and are then amenable only to those of great muscular pow er and determination It is now some what generally acknowledged that whatever be the limitations of the average: woman's presence of mind an automobile is safer in her hands than in those of a male cbfnpanion who admires her and is anxious to find out if the admiration is mutual The most Important factor of safety in women machinemanship lies doubtless in the fact that only vigorous self reliant women will' undertake to guide an automobile and that their relatives will provide them with more complete instruction in the art of driving a ma chine than they usually think neces sary for themselves In Chicago where a public examina tion and a license are required of automobile drivers most women who come to take the examination are ac companied by male escorts The ap plicant for license goes first to the health department where the health test is imprsed This examination is to determine chiefly whether the ap plicant has a weak heart and whether she may be color blind Color blind ness may be a most serious after dark when a swung bridge showing a red light might bo mistaken for the green safety light and bring disaster As for a weak heart every automobile driver can testify as to the shock that may come to the most unsuspecting and iron nerved of men who drive these machines through the crush and jam of down town The dis position of women in an emergency to faint and let a machine run where it will is one of the serious aspects of a weak heart arid this in women has made the heart test of first import ance IWhen a woman has passed the health test she appears at the office of the city electrician at the appointed hour to take the me chanical examination In such case she gives In the type of automobile which she is to run whether it is to be steam' gasoline or electrical Per haps she may take the examination for all classes of machines but it will be required of her that she name the kind of machine that she is to run and the license will be issued for that kind of machine only If for any reason she chooses to change to any other style of automobile she may have another license on application at which time she will surrender the old one Of the thirty five women who hold automobile licenses in Chicago about half are single women and almost without exception all are young Wizard Thomas A Edison has at last solved the storage battery prob if reports are to be believed He has come out with an unequivocal claim that his new nickel iron electric storage battery has at last reached the perfect point after three years of hard work on his part and he declares that it will outlive three or four automo biles and make the electric vehicle as useful on country roads as it is now on city pavements is now up to the manufacturer of automobiles to produce a cheap car he is quoted as saying have after three years of hard work solved the problem of an electrical storage battery which can be used for long distance work and which will wear three or four automobiles out be fore it will succumb itself batteries will run for 100 miles or more without charging They can be charged in a few hours They require no attention for all that is needed to replenish the liquid is to pour in a little water every now ana then to take the place of that which has evaporated I do not know how long it would take to wear out one of the batteries for we have not yet been able to exhaust the possibilities of one of them But I feel sure one will last longer than four or five THINGS AQUATIC Their Rudder and Cleveland Yachtsmen Want to Race One Design Dories Arc ircttr Centerboard That Pingjee Bowl IN CONNECTION with the opening of the handsome new club house of the Detroit Boat Club next month' a series' of regattas has been but recently little "has been heard of them One of the most interesting events that could be arranged for this event would be: a series of races between the new one design boats of the Yachtsmen and the sailing dories of the Lakewood Yacht Club of Clever land The members of the Lakewood club would bring up a number of their little and the races would be extremely interesting The Lakewood gentlemen are anxious to bring their boats up here for a race the local yachtsmen JThese sailing dories are pretty little craft They are clinker built with graceful lines and are almost aS un steady as a canoe A centerboard stiffens them somewhat however ana with a catspaw breeze blowing oh Like Erie they get out of Rocky river Where the club has its head quarters and furnish lively sport for the members These boats are handsomely built With mahogany strakes and excellent oil finish Their sail plan does not call for as much canvas as the boats but as the craft themselves ere lighter the two types ought to be about evenly matched The Lakewood club is a new organi zation It has been in existence only two or three tears and as yet has no club house It has the most beautiful anchorage on fresh wat3" however and plans for a pretty little club house have been completed and work will begin this summer Being a new organization the finances would not allow the club to build the boats themselves our or five members ordered them from the same design however and others continued to order them until now there are nine dories in the club exactly alike It 13 the Intention of Com Vorce and a number
