things that the present emperor of Germany has done for his empire probably none equals that of establish ment of the German navy' When he assumed the helm a few years ago Germany hardly knew that it had a navy A few out of date men of war only a very few of which were of met al construction and none with arma ment enough to withstand a modern torpedo destroyer constituted the en tire offensive and defensive naval force of the country The young emperor set about to remedy this weakness and he went at the work in a way that was most effective He had not only to build up powerful fleets but he had to man them and to man them he had to Inculcate in the bosoms of his phlegmatic subjects a love of sea life and arouse in them a desire for itC' He took up yachting as a pstime He sailed morning noon and night when not engaged in other duties and his subjects took an interest in the sport because the young kaiser took so active a part in it' The contagion spread and it was but year or two before the wealthier Germans to have their yachts arid them it was but a step to the common people The whole German nation got to love the sea 7 The first yacht of any real merit was the Thistle which tie pur chased in Scotland after she had b'efen defeated in the races the cup by tho Volunteer in 1887 "The Thistle was a handsome craft arid the Germans went wild over her She was sailed successfully for several years under the name of Meteor until the kaiser built a new yacht of steel and wood construction on the lines of Lord Valkyrie HI and the Prince of 'Britannia Trie boat was a cutter and has been successfully sailed by Capt Ben Parker and the emperor himself in scores of yacht races 'Last fall he decided to'agairt in crease the size of his boat and he or dered Meteor which has just been launched with such ceremony at island It Is probable that he came to Amer ica for the design and the craft be cause of the splendid success which he had with the Yampa a boat which Carey Smith designed for an American and which passed into the hands of the emperor three or four years ago' He called her the Idune and has raped her in schooner races whenever lit has been possible Schooners are not fancied in Europe and the opportunities for racing have been limited Larey siuiuu aLuuvners class by themselves No one has ever equaled them either from a racing or a cruising standpoint The
