Benzie was born in Ingham Comity this State January 29 184 3 His education was obtained in the com mon schools and by private study At the age of 12 he left home and engaged as clerk in a country store receiving for his services his boaixl and clothes and schooling during the winter months rom that time forward he maintained himself besides when a little older contributing to the support of his family In September 1861 he enlisted as a private in the Second Michigan Cavalry for three years and served his full time but returned home entirely blind having lost his sight by inflammation of the eyesand maltreat ment at the hands of unskilled army surgeons In 1867 and 1868 he recovered his eye In the spring of ISff he commenced the study of law with Judge Pratt atMason and in August 1872 was admitted to the bar and removed to rankfort Benzie County in October 1873 where he has since resided practicing his pro fession Immediately after being admitted to he far he was apiiointed as one of the Circuit Court Commissioners of Ingham County to fill a vacancy and in November following was elected to same office for the ensuing term receiving nearly 1000 majority He also held the oflice of Village Clerk of Mason for one term and Justice of the Peace from July 1S71 until his removal to rankfort In November 1S74 he was elected Prosecut ing Attorney and Circuit Court Commissioner of Benzie County by a unanimous vote there being no opiwsition candidates The latter of fice coming in conflict with his practice he soon after resigned 1876 he was re elected Prosecuting Attorney by a majority of seventy seven votes which was" the largest majority received by auy of the county officers He has also held the oifice of Supervisor one term since residing in rankfort The total vote cast for Representative in his district at the recent election was 1 151 of which he as Republican candidate received 713 the Greenback candi date 406 and the Democratic candidate 3 JOSEPH GIRAKDTN Representative from the hu st District of Wayne City of Detroit was born April 6 183S at Berthier District of Montreal On tario He received a good common school ed ucation and moved to Detroit May 10 1S56 Mr Girardin was engaged for many years iir the mercantile line but about three years ago 7 retired from active business on account of ill health In politics he has always been a Democrat At the recent election he received 5 company of Detroit serving cities from the ranks sion When'" the first was made in 1S61' Mr as a private in Company A Second Michigan Infantry and was directly elected by Second District of Van Buren County was born in Oneida County and came to Michigan in 18(56 Ho completed his education at Governenr Academy St Lawrence County st tidied medicine at Theresa in the same State and graduated from the tou Medical College Philadelphia He has been Township Superintendent of Schools and also postmaster of Bangor where he resides and practices medicine Dr erguson was a Hillsdale College and at tluj Law Department Of the Michigan Univer sity defraying his expenses at these institu tions by teaching He removed to Lapeer City in 1869 and was admitted to the practice of law in October of that year where he has followed his profession of lawyer since In 1870 Mr Moore was elected Circuit Court Com missioner for Lapeer County in 1872 was elected to the office of Prosecuting Attorney of Lapeer County aud in the spring of 18 4 was elected Mayor of Lapeer City bj the largest majority ever given a candidate for that office In the fall of 1874 Mr Moore was ro electcd Prosecuting Attorney which office he held until December 31 ISiG In the fall of 18n Mr Moore was nominated as a candidate for the office of State Senator but declined the nomiiiLtion liecause of professional engage ments xlu 1878 was elected Senator receiving 4709 vtes to 4283 cast for Wattles Democrat and 911 for atkins Green back JOHN PATTERSON Senator from the Eighth District (Calhoun County) was bom in tho Township of Ecktord Calhoun Co Mich March 27 1838 During boyhood his summers were spent worldng on his farm and his winters in attending the common school in his native town 7 He prepared for college at Albion Seminary and pursued the classical course at Hillsdale Col lege graduating from that institution in 1864 Immediately entering the law department of Albany University at Albany he com pleted his law course and received the honors of that institution in 1865 and was admitted to tho bar by the Supreme Court of the State? of New York He defrayed the entire expense of his education from his own earnings work ing vacations holidays and time not required on his studies for that purpose After two further study in an oflice he commenced practice in December 1867 at Marshall Mich where he still resides Mr Patterson is a lawver by occupation and has devoted his time exclusively to litigated cases in the differ ent State and Courts of Michigan' This is his first political office He is one of the trustees of Hillsdale College and also holds the position of Lecturer on Constitutional Law lie fore the' senior class of that institution As Republican candidate for Senator Mr Patter son received 3j414 votes John Powers Demo cratic 1511 Ed White National 2418 and John Richards Prohibition 26 5 RICHARD ROBBINS Senator from the Sixth District County of Lenawee was born at Kinghwood New Jer sey April 27 1831 He was admitted to the bar in Lenawee County in 1859 In 1863 he received from Gov Blair a commission as sec ond lieutenant and raised a company for the Second Michigan Cavalry August 23 1863 he was promoted to major During the war Maj Bobbins participated in over 60 engagements and was seriously wounded at the battle of Kingston Ga May 18 1864 He was muster ed out of the service March 13 1865 with the brevet rank of lieutenant colonel for gallant ry He served three terms as Justice of the Peace and one term as of the Citi of Adrian He was twice chosen a member of the House of Representative viz inlS75 45and 1877 8 As Republican candidate he received 4576 votes a plurality of 1761 JOSEPH SHOEMAKER Senator Twenty fourth District was born August SO 1820 at Mohawk Herkimer Co State of New York He attended the district schooL until 1837 when his father and family removed to Joliet Ill and there attended se lect school such as tne country afforded at that early day In 1840 Mr Shoemaker joined his brother at Sandusky who was chief engineer of the Mad Lake Erie and Little Miami Railroads then in course of construction and remained one year with the engineers in locating the roads In 1842 he en gaged in merchandise and buying grain at Republic and in 1852 went to Covington Ky and engaged in manufacturing iron hav ing charge off a rolling mill In 1855 Mr Shoemaker came to Jackson in this State aud engaged in farming 7 In 1859 he was ap pointed Postmaster at Jaclcson held the office till 1861 when he removed to his present loca tion in Montcalm County and engaged in farming and lumbering was elected Jus tice of the Peace in 1866 As Democratic candidate for Senator he received at tho late election 5428 votes 7 JOHN TOOKER Senator from the Sixteenth District composed of Ingham and Clinton Counties was born in the Town of Tyrone Steuben Co July 71S36 He removed with his parents to Aim Arbor Mich in 1838 rom there he went to Woodhull Shiawassee County in 1840 and to Lansing in 1847 (the year the Capitol was lo cated at Lansing) where he has since resided" He 1'eceived a common school education and at the age of 18 purchased the foundry at North Lansing and was engaged in the manu facturing of farming implements for about fourteen years Mr Tooker enlisted October 11 1S62 in the Sixth Michigan Cavalry and 7 served as Orderly Sergeant for about a year i when his health failed and hs was discharged He has since been engaged in the drug busi ness and for the past five years until lately' in the boot and shoe business In the spring of 1872 Sir Tooker was elected Mayor of Lah sing re elected in 1873 and again in 1S76 As Republican candidate he received 5781 votes him and for Col Duffield to buy his own forage and provisions in the neighborhood Both Gov Maggofin and Gen Sherman twice ordered Col Duffield to evacuate this fort but lie disobeyed both orders and remained until Gen Buell relieved Gen Sherman in command of the Deportment of the Cumberland When the great difficulty ith Mason and Slidell occurred Gov Blair of Michigan fearing a speedy war with England wrote to know it Col Duffield would return on his order to aid iu defense of the State and received the re ply This answer found its way into the papers and Col I ry Chief of Gen Buell's staff was greatly surprised and directed Cel Duffield within twenty four hours to report whether he would obey the President of the United States and the Gen erat of the Department or not 77 Col Duffield replied that he should follow the directions of his own commission which compelled him to obey first the President of the United States second the Governor of the State of Michi gan and third the General of the Department Col Duffield was then ordered to report im mediately to Gen Buell in person and was at first severely reprimanded by that General Col Duffield defended his position by main taining that the Constitution of the United States recognized two very different kind of troops first the regular army of the United States whose officers were commissioned by the President and who 'were compelled to obey the articles of war and such army regulations as the War Depart ment might prescribe and second the militia oi the several States mustered into the United States service whose officers were commissioned by the States and who were compelled to obey the articles of war and such regulations as Congress alone might pre scribe United States Senator Guthrie and United States District Attorney Speed of Louisville both supported this position and Gen Buell so far from censuring this course immediately assigned Col Duffield to the com mand of the Twenty third Brigade and di rected him to proceed to Murfreesboro Tenn and relieve Gen Mitchell at that point rom MurfnJesboro Col Duffield was ordered to Louisville to take command as Military Gov ernor of all that portion of Kentucky lying east of the Tennessee River (the portion west of that river being in Grant's department) He remained in command of Kentucky until relieved by Gen Boyle then returned to his old command the Twenty third Brigade which was ordered to McMinnville Tenn and remained in this command until disabled by two gunshot wounds at the battle of 'Murfrees boro Tenn where he was also taken prisoner Col Duffield remained with the rebel Maj Money as a prisoner i until able to travel when'ho was paroled and returned home Be ing very kindly cared for by Maj while a wounded and helpless prisoner and unwilling to be outdone in courtesy by a rebel he sent from Detroit a set of silver for rs Maney consigned to her relative A Murfree of Nashville The jeweler in De troit with an eye to business before shipping this silver exhibited it in his window as a pres sent from Col Duffield to a rebel major Sen ators Howard aud Chandler thereupon charged Col Duffield with giving aid and comfort to the rebellion Col Duffield reported to the Adjutant General the United States at Washington the facts and the Adjutant Gen eral approved of the entire transaction Six months after this he was compelled to resign on account of his wounds the war being nearly over and was appointed Chief Engineer of the Hudson River Railroad and completed the dou le track on that line He next took charge of seven collieries in Schuylkill Co Penn be longing to the New York Schuylkill Coal Company as the resident Manager in order to weed out the Mollie Maguires who had had the entire control of these mines for more than three years He had a two fight with the Mollies during which they murdered three of sub managers and burned up the stores and offices but he finally overcame the disorder Being appointed President of the Belmont Nelson Iron Company Gen Duffield went into Kentucky and took charge of that affairs and rebuilt the furnaces in Belmont and Nelson on the line of the Louisville Nashville Railroad and got them into good running order He was also appointed Chief Engineer of the Kentucky Union Railroad and surveyed and locateil that line from Paris in Bourbon Co to the Pound Gap of the Cum berland Mountains and still holds this position although Owing to the depressed financial con dition of affairs no progress has yet been made in its construction and no work of any kind been done for two years past In politics Gen Duffield was originally an old line Whig and being a strong conservative could never sanction the ultra radicalism of the Republican party He is one of the old sixty nine Whigs with Dr Pitcher Gen Wil liams and the other sixty nine Whigs who re pudiated Republicanism and joined the Demo crats as the only conservative 1 party left Since 1852 Gen Duffield has always been strong in the Democratic faith and finds that faith grows stronger with growing years The vote at the election was as follows: VVm Duffield Democrat 2873 Orson Curtis Republican 2710 Wm Duddleson Green back 1 1 1 GEO A ARR Senator from the Twenty sixth Senatorial District was bom on the 27th day of July 1842 in Niagara Co He removed with Ids parents to Monroe Co Mich in the of 1851 His early ad vantages of edu cation were limited It April 1861 he enlisted in the Adrian Cadets Company of the irst Michigan Infantry and participated with his regiment in the first battle of Bull Run Ho then enlisted in the ourth United States Artillery in which he served throughout the war leaving tho service as irst Sergeant At the close of the war he entered the State Agricultural College from whiclj he gradua ted in 1870 Mr arr was soon admitted to to the bar and removed to Ottawa County where he still resides aud is now associated ll Akeley in the practice of law Previous to the late election he was never a candidate for public offices His plurality as Republican candidate was 1491 HORACE HALBERT elect of the Seventeenth Senatorial District was born in Yates Co March 1 1827 His home was on the farm where born for nearly twenty years His ed ucation up to this date was obtained at the district school excepting a few months in the State Normal School at Albany and about one vear in Alfred Academy same State Inl850 he first came to Michigan re maining until the fall of 1852 In the spring of 1854 he again left his home in New York anc entered tho Michigan University completed tho scientific coursa and graduated June 1858 Tho same year after graduating he was en gao cd to teach mathematics in the Kalamazoo Hi School He held this position for four veal's declined the offer for the position for the fifth year and returned to New York remain in that State for five years Iu 1867 he purchased the farm in Conway Livingston Co Mich where he now resides The same year he took charge of the department of mathematics in Kalamazoo College remaining however but one year In 1870 1 2 he was elected Supervisor of his township on the Re publican ticket Elected County Treasurer in 1872 by a majority of 435 aud again in 1874 he was re elected by a majority of 320 The whole number of votes cast for Senator iri the Seventeenth District in 187S were 10370 Of this number Mr Halbert as Republican re ceived 5005 Lewis Meyer Democrat received 4 152 Abner Wood Greenback received 1210 HILTON HINE Senator from the Twenty fifth District (Kent County) was born at Meredith Delaware Co ebruary 2 182s where he resided until the autumn of 1847 when he removed to Can non Kent Co Mich and settled upon and cleared up the farm upon which he still con tinues to reside His education was principally obtained in the common schools of New York supplemented bv a few terms at a public school and the Delaware Literary Institute at ranklin He has always fol 1'wed th occupation of a farmer and has held the responsible position of President and Treas of the Mutual ire Insurance Co ip hi of Kent County tor the past eight vnrs Although a life long Democrat until th" organization of the National Greenback party has never been an aspirant for politi cal honor and very unexpectedly received the nomination of State Senator by said party which nomination was1 afterwards indorsed by the Democratic County Committee As
