WILLIAM A THROOP hungry miners A Sad Prospect for Some of the Ar gonauts in the Black Mills A Black Hills correspondent of the New York Heraldhas serious forebodings of com ing suffering amonT the miners there Be says The increasing number of mlnere in this country is a subject for serious philan thropic attention I have remarked the suffering which many of them have shown a willingness to undergo by reason of the in fatuation under which they labor They con fidently expect that In a few months there will Dea dense population and that a market will be established here for its convenience The companies best provided with supplies have sufficient to sustain them for only two mouths Many who at first were so provided have allowed their provender to become exhausted before thinking of replenish ing It Several miners have at the very verjre of starvation determined to turn their steps homeward The problemwhich stares them in the face is to pro cure food to sustain them on the jour ney The commissary regulations are en forced with severity in this command and no civilians 'can procure provisions unless through the charity of offleers or the dishon esty of soldiers Those miners who are well supplied hold on to their stores with a phari saical grip aud refuse to sell any part of them for even fabulous prices It is easy to foresee if the government does not force the to retire from the Black Hills during the summer and autumn that there will be terrible suffering amongthem after the com mencement of winter There is no military or Indian post in such proximity as to make It oj nnooca ond flwwft whff allow them sGnoio ka chrit Tin In thft vaDevs DV ti The government would do well to express its authority if for no other than a benevo lent purpose in preventing 'such a sad re sult Tbe miner always trusts to a super stitious degree to tack and this peculiarity renders him still more careless of the present and unconcerned for the future This afternoon two men formerly resiaent in Kentucky and Missouri eame into the camp from the upper valley and represented themselves as destitute of food and anxious to return to ort Laramie They were dis gusted with the meagreness of the gold pro duct in this country and said that there were many others equally disappointed They offered some of their bedding in ex change for rations of which they succeeded In obtaining a small quantity A IXulued City In Massachusetts The Springfield Republican has the follow ing It will be no matter of surprise that Cape Ann like Arizona has its ruined city The architectural remains of Dogetown are not on so grand a scale as those of the de serted Pueblas but there is quite a sense of melancholy about them for all that This old settlement of Dogstown lies in the center of the cape on a wide and desolate hilly plateau whose skv line is a weird huddle of bowlders of strange fantastic shapes resembling more a Stonehenge fastened a dance than anything else It la reached by rude roads grass grown and lon deserted except by farmers who have hoj to feed and cows to herd on the abandoned ground which has long been used in com mon Bordering these roads are the cellars the door stones and other evidences of some forty dwellings that once made despised Dog town a principal settlement of Gloucester Around many of these quite a plot of land had been cleared and shows to day signs of the benefits of cultivation The sheep penS are in 1 front of these house sites most of them were not very large houses but some were the last of these was taken down within the memory of many now living There were stories of witches of course around the abandoned hearthstones and it is true that the last in hMfjint of the lonely hill driven bv the un merciful miseries of his forcscore years went cut and killed himself one day seventy years ago and was found dead under one of the great rocks It is all conjecture why attempt to set a city on such an in hospitable hill was made Some say it was io be remote from pirates but the view of the sea from the old walls is very fine and fr A Singular River in the Black Hills A New York Herald correspondent writing from the Black Hills says A most remark able stream was discovered and appropriately named Amphibious CreekiItsJwaters sinkinto and rise from the earth many times la their journey from their original spring to the south fork of the Cheyenne A well worn bed extends all the way showing that in thewet season a torrent flows on the sur face but at the present time not a vestige of the current may be seen for miles after it disappears until it suddenly bubbles "up again from the rocks and rolls onward to the next point of descent into its subterranean channel Streams of this character are so common on the great plains that they are not thought remarkable but they are rarely found among mountains for the reason that the sub strata is usually composed of solid rock 'lying not far below the surface and af fording no room for a sub passage through the sand if that should happen to compose ths soil' 7 ront parlor and bedroom furnished or imi urnis neo ao iw bAfi'U Ti front rooms in
