and several' mines have been compelled ta stop work Yesterday forenoon a person passing along the track of the Detroit A Milwaukee Road found between Antietam and Chestnut streets the body of a child about six weeks oid The body with the exception of a small portion was frozen into the lee and when dug out bore undoubted evidence that a murder had been committed The body was entirely naked but tound 'the head was wrapped a piece of cloth which had evidently' been drawn over the mouth so tightly as to cause suffoca tion There were also marks on the neck of the child which looked as if the little one had been choked Coroner Griffin was called and took charge of the body and of the scores who viewed it no one put the age under four weeks while the physicians thought it must have been six weeks or two months old at the time of the murder It was thought it had lain in the ditch several days and from the way it was imbedded in the mud the wretch who carried it there must have given it a toss from the track above The child had struggled and moved as wxs shown by the cramped position of tbe limbs The case seems to be one of de liberate murder and it is hoped that the efforts to bring discharge those responsibilities in a faithful and judicious manner They se lected as a location for a public park the best site in their judgment that was attainable and as far as they were able to make pur chases thereof they succeeded in making such purchases at a most favorable rate and at prices far below tho then and the present market value of the property contracted for which contracts affairs THE IMMEDIATE DELIVERY THE VLR GINIUS NOT TO BE PRESSED The delay in the delivering of the Virginiua occasions much disappointment The em barrassments surrounding the home govern ment in the matter are appreciated and therefore without formal prolongation of the time the administration will wait until the delivery can ba effected in a way that will give the least offense to Spanish pride It is believed from what has been privately said in official quarters that it was not agreed between Secretary ish and Admiral Polo that tne Virglnius shouldbe surrendered at the port of Havana but that the vessel should be taken tram the harbor and conveyed beyond its jurisdiction and then delivered to such United States vessel os might be sentto receive it preparation being made to give timely proceedings of tbe Society at the meeting in 1872 at which "the proposition to change the name of the Society was voted down President Dyckman said that the subject was one which came up at every Professor GL Whitney contended that the designation was toa narro and that the 80 ahnnid emarrex lts sphere so ns to in clude arboriculture floriculture etc auu that the name of the Society should embrace its Merriman objected to any cbange'of name tbiaktng the object desired could be well enough accomplished by an amendment to the donstitutloa Mr Dietrich replying to tbe insinuation of Secretary Thompson that horticulture In its derivatives meant cultivating a garden said that away back in history there was a garden which included more than a small and so might Professor Whitney suggesting that a name fully including the purposes of the Society might be too long for practical men to use said that be should propose an article to pre cede the constitution giving a definition of abundantly but latterly bad been much degenerated and al most sterile producing but little fruit Mr Windows ot South Haven thought the trouble might arise from neglect to enrich tbe soli but Mr Merritt answering that tbe plants grew luxuriantly Mr Windows gave an opinion that the trouble might arise by replacing the plants trom the original stock Prof Whitney of Muskegon gave in stances of the degeneration ot the Kittatining and other' blackberries and also of some species of strawberries but knew nothing of the Lawton Mr Brown of Battle Creek dwelt strongly on the necessity of winter protection eulo gizing the Lawton above all blackberries President Dyckman had hinuelt had no ex perience with blackberries but was aware of the fact that the Law ton' was the favorite at South Haven He thought the difficulty might be removed by procuring fresh stock from other localities Mr Merritt observed that the cutting away of the young growth bad improved the bear ing qualities ot the older
