a question entirely with himself and it would seem inhospitable to press it upon him Incidents of the Polls! Revolt A We find in the Polish correspondence of the London My Bewe the following notices of scenes on the battle fields i Olescice about ten miles from the woods of Kobidanka where the battle of May 5tb took place we found Winnicki the chief of the staff lying wounded A ball had struck him in the head but happily only carried away part of the scalp without fracturing the skulL He described the battle as having been tremen dously severe and from all accounts the volleys fired at intervals of a few minutes by the Rus sians were more like a flood of lead than a mere shower of bullets the number of about eight hundred men the Russians poured across the moat at precisely the centre point in the bend of the bow and temporarily occupied the Polish camp On the left where Gen Waligorski commanded the Russians made a tremendous onslaught pouring a flank fire and from guns Slanted on Austrian territory Thus the Po sh position was assaulted from every side and but for the extraordinary bravery of its de fenders must have been effectually carried An officer who was present at the battle of reder icksburg assured me that the Are on that day was never so heavy as this Wyleryneki the as the com mander of the insurgent Cossacks is called lormed his aixty men in the side which form ing the base of the camp separates the Rus sian and Austrian territories and made a splen did charge between the double fire of the in surgents from the Russian woods and the Rus sians from the Austrian woods The cavalry was not stopped by the marsh but in the face of the guns planted on the other side rode boldly into it The Russian gunners seeing this at once took to flight and bad not the cavalry become hopelessly entangled in the marsh the two guns might have been captur ed Six of the insurgent Cossacks fell dead and the attaman was wounded Where the fight was the hottest a priest Bulsiewicz raising the cross aloft put himself at the bead of a desperate band and threw him self on the dense masses of tfle enemy In one of these charges young Waligorski a boy of 17 rushing madly forward was laid low by a bullet which struck him on the jaw Badly but not mortally wounded he was left lying on the ground when some Russian soldiers dis patched him with the bayonet filling his mouth with earth to drown hie cries I had dined with the poor tellow two days before and lit tle thought when left tfee camp I should nev er see him The officers of the insurrectionary army named Lorans and who have just arrived in Paris publish a statement of the atrocities committed by the Russian soldiers in PoJpii anj add some bits of evidence to show the manner in which Prussia aids tfie Qgar They sav the battle of Nowa Wies a body of Rus sians pursued by our column took refuge on Prussian territory they were devoid of am munition and could not have offered resistance for any length qf time The Prussian authorities billeted the Rus sian soldiers on tfee inhabitants a banquet took place in honor of them and two days after they were conducted to the frontiers supplied with Arms and baggage and wonderful to re late the very same troops which were pre viously devoid of ammunition found them selves solely owing to their visit to the Prus sian territory well supplied with powder and shot Moreover the Prussian frontier bristling with cannon the Prussian post pickets situated five hundred yards apart the garrisoning of all the villages bordering on Poland are a pretty sure proof of tfie operation of the convention concluded on the Sth ot ebruary last between cleetion It ie a pitiable thing that we are now to have a strife of men for a prize to be won a year and a half bence but so it is it cannot be helped and nobody is to blame but the cand idates and politicians Mr game would seem a difficult one and likely to be more difficult but he has thus far proved himself to be very powerful the Peo ple Vongress Wall street the army all sub mit to him He seized Vallandigkam and bun dlee Mm over the border and Ohio democracy daree not wag its tongue a small squad of his sol diers with muskets breaks up a democratic couven tlon'in Indianapolis and another squad suppresses the leading ojsposition newspaper in the West Under the plea of national peril and the necessity of saving the Union or as Gerrit Smith has it of putting down the rebellion ha igay proceed to severer extremes and having secured an endorsement by bis own party or by the loyal league into which it is easy enough to introduce a Trojan horse filled with office holders he may cpmpel the country to re elect him that is supposing that they are normally unwilling to do so 1 think it fair to presume that it in November 1863 the rebellion js not suppressed the people will not be witling to re elect the men who have tried for three and a half years in vain to suppress it It is not in human nature for a people to tolerate at least to admire and seek toper pp dafc such administrative skill as that proves it If on the other hand we have victories Mr Lincoln runs the immediate risk of meeting with a competitor who may be more powerful than himself with the people and tbe army also If he seeks to avald this aanger by proscribing all men of skill and energy he runs the risk of tiring the people out more and more every day His role is a difficult one bpi be flag resources One consideration not yet taken into the estimate of chances is tbe comparative strength of the ins and the outs In peaceful times and with free elections tbe outs would have the beet of it the history of elections since 1836 shows this but it is impossible to say what power may accomplish when it sets out One thing I reckon is certain viz: that William Seward will have a good deal to do with the next election more than with tbe last It he is content to be Mr great man four years longer and it Mr Lincoln stands a chance to be re chosen Mr Seward will take the loyal side if the radicals the anti slavery men the men who are in earnest and mean to suppress the revolt and slavery with it no matter what breaks the men who want a house with all the modem improvements bear sway in the republican counsels Mr Seward will give tbe country to the copperheads as he gave New York to Horatio Seymour He and hisclifueof corruptionists are strong enough to control New York and Pennsylvania if not other States except as against the President himself I believe on the whole and as at pre sent advised that Mr Lincoln if be wants to get re elected must look outside of tbe repub lican party unless he js willing to dispense with the services of Mr Seward That ought to be the ultimatum of every loyal man for there can be humanly speaking no success either in the work of suppressing the rebellion or in of reconstructing tbe Union and Southern society while political a(heiam bears sway in Washington House and lot for sale On Howard street between 3d and 4th st Apply to Pennsylvania and other Northern States Correspondence of the Times HSADquABTBBS Abmy or ths Potomac 1 Monday June 8 The reports about the proposed great raid of the enemy have taken some positive shape Information has been received within the last three days which fixes the character and de signs of this body of the enemy quite accu rately or several weeks since the battle of Chan cellorsyille Jeb Stuart has been massing and drilling and supplying a large force of cavalry at or near Brandy Station five miles north of Culpepper This force is the largest body of cavalry that the enemy has ever got together It consists as near as I can learn of the two original brigades of Lee aad Wm itzhugh Lee several regiments of Virginia cavalry part of brigade one brigade of North Carolina cavalry General guerrillas from the Shenandoah Valley who have recently been rendezvousing at Harrison burgh since their return from Western Virgin ia and in addition two brigades of mounted infantry one of them being General old brigade of Texas and Mississippi troops The total strength of the force is estimated at from twelve to fifteen thousand men This force Stuart has been getting ready to make a grand raid into the North and it may well be thought that such a body of these desperate men will make their presence felt as soon as they get into Maryland On Saturday he had a grand review and those who witnessed it give it as their estimate that he had from fifteen to twenty thousand men in line This is doubtless exaggerated I cannot bring myself to believe that his total strength reaches 10 000 One month ago the entire effective force of the cavalry east of the Blue Ridge did not exceed 4500 men and I doubt if the resources of the enemy in the respect of horse flesh have been sufficient to enable them to treble that even by catching and training all wild guerrillas of Virginia Of the probable direction of march my information is not definite It is probable relying upon the main strength of his force that he will attempt to break through our lines in the vicinity of Warrenton and Manassas and pass close along the front of the Washing ton defences and thence into Maryland above that city But that would give us too much notice of his coming It is far more likely that he will pass directly into the Loudon valley or even into the Shenandoah either of those at this season will afford excellent grazing for horses apd thence into Maryland and Pennsyl vania fiilt is not the intention of this force to fight unless compelled to do They go on a rail ripping horse stealing expedition and to bring the horrors of war to our own doors as they express it Dnce well on wing and pursuit as is always the case will be vTSl nigh uselees This army may be depleted of its cavalry and fail to capture more than a few drunken stragglers Stuart will doubtless move in a very few days and the only way to effectually interfere with this dashing arrange ment is to pitch into him where he is So Gen Hooker thinks And it is not improper for me to add here that ere to morrow night the mettle of this grand aggregation of raiders will be tested a force believed to be equal to theirs of cavalry and artillery backed up by several thousand picked the veteran regi ments of this army selected with reference to especially hazardous service is now well on the way and will be at the appointed rendezvous to night At daylight to morrow morning they cross the Rappahannock and then comes the fray Pleasanton is fitted for this work and with him are Kilpatrick Buford Davis Gregg Dufie and a host of other superior cav alry officers Gen Bussell of Massachusetts and Gen Ames of Maine are in command of the infantry Unless the enemy has already flown which is not probable to morrow will witness Sergeant Young at the detective office and stated that there was a plot on foot to murder and rob a jeweller in Broadway which demanded tbe immediate at tention of the police Upon questioning the informant it appeared that he had been induced to enter into the conspiracy by a man named Zenos Curtis whom he bad met at Lancaster fa some six months previously Curtis it was who made the proposition and for fear of an accident he refused to let Hock know the name until the last moment He represented that it was a to use his own words and would pay them about $10000 but it only required a little nerve to carry out the plan Sergeant Young on being satisfied that Hock was acting in good faith instructed him to go ahead with tbe con spiracy and that at the proper moment Curtis would be arrested The following day the con spirators met by agreement when Hock insist ed on knowing the name ot the jeweller and all the facte connected with the scheme Curtis was not willing to be communicative at first but finally took his confidant to the office of the diamond broker in question on the second floor of No 512 Broadway and there disclosed all bis plans Tne broker was to be visited by Curtis and asked to exhibit his stock ot diamonds when at a favorable memen snuff was to be thrown in his eyes he was to be knocked on the head with an iron weight which usually laid upon his table and then the pair were to rifle his person and decamp with all the movable property they could lay their hands on Hock was to be pro vided with a yoke or piece of wood constructed so as to prevent any person entering the room while they were engaged at work The yoke was intended to fasten a side door which led to an adjoining tailoring estab lishment and is quite an ingenious contrivance After the robbery was effected the conspirators were to meet at the corner of Hudson and Dommick streets and in case they should be hard pushed they were to meet each other at Hotel Jersey City or at Arms Philadelphia just as circumstances per mitted Sergeant Young having been ully posted in regard to the plot detailed detectives Maedou gal and Bennett to the conspiratois and report what they discovered twice each day Hock had a daily interview with the police and communicated all that transpired between him and Curtis On Monday Hock informed Sergeant Young that Curtis was hard and wanted to raise a little money before entering in the Broad way as he termed it The de tective anxious to humor the fellow handed Hock eighteen dollars all of which was mark ed and told him to give seven dollars of the ftrpnnni to did uuuipauiwu liu vauwwmcu however not to give him the money until just before the attempt waa made to rob Mr Piumb Curtiz insisted on having some money however to buy steel saws with so that in cose of their arrest they would be able to extricate themselves from prison and a portion of the money was invest ed at a hardware store in the Bowery The saws which were very fine and well calculated for the purpose of cutting through prison bars were ingeniously concealed in the legs and sole of their boots and in the inside lining of a meer schaum ppe case There were a dozen saws in all which were equally divided between Curtis and his traitorous confederate Yesterday being fixed upon for the consum mation of the roocery Curtis called upon Mr Plumb dirk knife which he had thoughtless ly left exposed when Curtis sprang forward and tried to grasp the weapon A scuffle immediate ly ensued between the and the would be assassin which resulted in Mr Pl him by Hock was found in his possession Between the sp)e of bis boots and in the legs were found ths steel saws already referred to while the case of his meerschaum was similarly ornamented Hock also Richmond Sentinel discusses the relations of the rebels with political parties in the United States It says So far as we are concerned there are bud boo parties in the United States those ieho are for war and those who are desirous of peace With other distinctions we have no concern nor should we regard the different views of the advocates of war cr the classes into which the friends of peace are aiviaea It is generally agreed that there is no prac tical difference between the republicans and the war democrats They dispute among them selves as to how the war should ba waged and by whom it should be conducted but both agree that it should go on aud with both we have one argument only tne ultima ratio or kings and peoples A difference of opinion however prevails in the South as to whether the various advocates ot peace in the North can be classed together with equal propriety: and a distinction is made between those who desire peace uncondition ally and those who like Mr Vallandigham advocate it as the best means of restoring the Union So odious to us has been the idea of reunion with the North become that there are not wanting those who oppose peace itself when proposed in tbe hope of restoration and denounce the party of which Mr Vftljandig ham was the chief as bitterly as they do the disciples of Lincoln and Van Buren While it is admitted that such a party is not in all re spects ideatlcal with the friendfi of peace for sake a little reflection will show that so far as we are concerned the difference is more nominal than real and we should beware that in so grave a matter we flo nqt give that heed to the promptings of feeling wTsich can only be safely accorded to the teachings of un prejudiced reason In onesense those who Jawsr peace ata meatts of restoring the Union are as much our enemies as those who seek to accomplish the same object by war because both are hostile to the government of our choice nnff both ffcsjre its overthrow If it be true that the return of peace would lead to the downfall of the Confederacy then those at the North who would adopt a pacific policy toward us are indeed our most dange rous enemies for they would most certainly accomplish our national ruin The Sentine! then controverts this idea and Bays There is no reason why we should not trust tbe fate of our independent nationality to the influences of peace with as much readiness and confidence as we have displayed in sub mitting it to the trial of arms But it may be said if peace shall prove ineffectual aa a means of reunion its advocates will again resort to uosiuiiiie 4 UCy flowever hold that war has already been found unavailing and would hot be inclined to repeat the vain and ruinous attempt But suppose they do In what respect would we be injured fry a respite however brief from the horrors of the present gHflggle? Is it nothing that the voice of reason ana justice be heard even for a moment above the dreadful diri of war 1 There would be little danger of a relapsp The eyperiiept of peace bright even show the Northern people that they have been misled as to tbe practical effects ot the dissolu tion of the Union They would discover as gngland did after the separation of the Colo nies that their true interest is not in our des truction but in our prosperUy rapff that the latter wul be greatly enhanced by our national existence The foreign interests of the North and South would be identical for they would be the interests of America as against Europe and tflpy can assuredly be better main tained by tfla combined power two strong nations than by the uncertain efforts qfa 'forced and jarring
