incident occurred in our city yesterday morning A regiment of volunteers under the command of Gen Patterson had just irone through their evolutions formed in line and with colors streaming and music playing were marching up Chesnut street when two af frighted horses attached to a barouche came galloping down the street at the top of their speed A vast crowd had collected in the imme diate vicinity several thousand persons we should say in addition to the regiment The appearance of the horses was almost instantane ous and although every effort was made to turn them from their course they still gallopped on directly down the middle of tho street The panic and confusion of the scene may be better imagined than described Gen Patterson saw the danger and quick as thought gave an order with the object of evading it Maj com pany and one or two others succeeded in filing off and thus leaving room for the furious beasts The great mass of the regiment however found this impossible and were compelled to rush pele mete against each a universal shriek of alarm and warning rising up from the vast mul titude in the meanwhile The scene for an in stant was fearful indeed and all the spectators who hail time to think at all supposed that more than one life must have been lost Providenti ally however no one was seriously injured and a burst of astonishment and congratulaion broke from the assembled thousands Thetvo lunteers itnm ediately reorganized while the hor ses galloped on exciting terror and consterna tion tor eight or ten squares further A blind man was knocked down and somewhat bruized but this we believe was all? A more provi dential escape or a more exciting and alarming scene we never witnessed It seem almost a miracle that such a large body of men ach car rying a musket could nave been rushed upon ao unexpectedly by two mad bones and a chariot attached to without the loss of a single Philadelphia Intelligencer: Iav68Tn Physiol0giiita and phyriciahs have demonstrated that lamjiter in proper quan knowledge in this ty which goes to verify the correctness of hi remark Some days since a gentleman ar rived Cleveland in pursuit of a fugitive debtor and having here learned the rimaway could probably be found in Detroit went in pursuit to that place He there discovered the 'i'" object of his search and with him a very beau and interesting younr female who was li vingwith him as his wife Knowing that he'st had a wife residing at the east our friend was somewhat surprised at this new accession to the 1 ftomestic circle of the fugitive' and still more so when she assured him in a manner too sincere add innocent to leave room for a doubt that she had been legally married to the person with whom she was found Not troubling hitnseR however at the time with aav inquiry into the matter the creditor arrested his debtor and brought him to this city where he was lodged in jaiL Hither the lady followed him and here the circumstances were disclosed winch have doomed a pure young creature to a broken heart and will probably terminate in her early death or a life more horrible than the grave She was an orphan and it is said inherited a large fortune which was under the care of an uncle her guardian Delicately' bred and ig 1 norant of the world it is no great cause of 'won der that het feelings were strongly tinctured with romance She was young too only six teen and in addition to extraordinary beauty possessed of every accomplishment of intellect and education The villain who deluded her was introduced to her relatives as a gentleman of standing and respectability and by his per sonal graces and consummate tact was well cal culated to win the affections of an inexperien ced and unsuspecting bosom Unable to accom plish his object by any other means he proposed marriage and contrary to the remonstrances of her uncle and friends she listened to his en treaties and finally eloped with the fascinating stranger to whom she was married in Detroit It was not until her arrival in this city that she dis covered the fatal secret of her former marriage The person who gave her the infor mation states that he never witnessed a more heart rending scene The conviction that she had been duped by him upon whom she had pla ced her richest affections with whom but a moment before she had expressed a wil lingness to die in prison together with the thought she was not his wife produced an alter nate struggle between pride and love such as can be only understood by those who have learned its horrors by experience Nature ever kind to her tenderest flowers left Miss Jong insensible to her fate Another and per haps little less bitter affliction was in reserve 4 The unprincipled villaiu had circulated far and wide a report that they had never been married and that she was only one of the many whose love he had won without the ceremony of legal union This story too reached her ears and tbe conviction of its truth gave another and deeper pang to her wounded spirit i or him she had given up all the home of her fathers the associates of her childhood the friends she loved and how had the wealth of her heart been repaid He for whom all had been sacrificed determined on a still further sa crifice of her only remaining treasure her Sood name and by a pitiful and malicious false ood endeavored to complete the ruin his arts and wickedness had devised In the mean time the author of her sorrow and disgrace having procured his liberation from prison has gone we know not whither and es te caped for a while the consequences of his of fence But though the law tardy and utterly impotent as it is in matters of this kind may be ineffectual to inflict upon such a being the pun ishment his crimes demanded there is an avenger in his own conscience if there is one spark of humanity yet left which sooner or latermust award him a retribution more fearful than any human tribunal can dispense Miss contrary to the orders of her physi cian who considered her removal in the present state of her health hazardous has returned to her home in Canada Poor girl If sympathy can heal the wounds of the spirit no honest heart will refuse her the balm of its pity andcompassion rom the Jour of Commerce THE ROCHESTER MURDER CONESSED i Rochester Oet26 1837 Gentlemen I wrote you on the 24th inst in haste giving you some particulars of the "murder of Lyman and of the arrest of three individuals whose names are Octavius Barron Peter Phil well and Thomas Bennett Our po lice and others connected with them have been indefatigable in their endeavors to ferret out the whole matter Tuesday and ednesday were spent in examining the prisoners with but little effect until last evening You will recollect I stated in my other communication that three individuals were arrested at the depot of the Tonawanda1 railroad It appears that while search was being made for them and their trunks that Barron jumped out of the car he was in and ran about one hundred rods to the second depot and from where the train is taken west by the engines He was so far a'ead of the officer in pursuit that when he arrived at the second depot he was out of sight He went in to a large pile of wood where he secreted $400 which was found last evening and recognized as part of the money received by Lyman on the 23a qlt The money was wrapped up in a white linen handkerchief which was found to 'belong to Barron This morning at an early hour Barron finding himself so closely pursued by tbe testimony and no doubt the work ings of a guilty conscience that he confessed the whole matter He states that Philwell shot Lyman and that be took the money Here we hare another proof that murder will out The have had another good effect and have caused the arrest of others and for other offences and have put our police and offi cere justice on tbe track and resort of other dene of infamous characters rom the well known efficiency of many who have the charge of affairs Of this kind it is fair to conclude that We have not finished up this business yet One fact more I would mention relating to the wife and her sufferings She states that he Wu in the habit of returning to the house at an early hour in the evening that is about 9 when the hour ui his return had arrivec and passed by she became uneasy and had the revolntion repeatedly formed of going for some of neurhbors to look for her husband butdii Ml Hour stole upon nourtewnui uw uuig aboon daylight appeared or very soon afterhe went to tne window looking in that direc hf would or should have returned The first object that met her view was her unfortu uate husband extended upon the ground where the ruthless hand of a worse barbarian hid deliberately murdered dragged and left him The sufferings of the wife are not to be descri bed The reflection that be was murdered within a few yards of his house that she beard distinctly the report of the pistol but too de liberately aimed gives rise to feelings that none ean describe and much less any one but herself the PhHoSetjAia 8 STEAMBOAT EXPLOSION TWO LIVES LOST 7 5 As the steam feriy boat Delaware Captain Downee plying between ferry at the foot of Market street in
