Gaines has reported to the department tha the Mexican forces are rapidly approaching the bor der thet he anticipates that as soon as they have reached the vicinity of the Indians the latter will join in the contest that the Indian force will respect no boundary line and that the operations in Texas as descriged by General Gaines cannot fail to produce a favorable effect upon the disposition and iTH ih inc oiute iiuuhuh laid out and established a state road Ironi Ed wardsburgh in Cass county via Cassopolis Voli nn and Paw Mills to Allegan in Allegan ciunty and David Crane Jacob Silver and John Siearerbe and they are hereby appointed commis suners for that purpose Sec 2 That Albert Bull Nathan Thomas ard Alexander Copeley be and they are hereby ap pointed commissioners to lay out and establish a sure road from Schoolcraft in ilmnazoo county to the village of St Joseph in Betr en county Sec 3 In laying out and ustablishing said roads the state shall not be liable for the expenses incurred thereby and in case the roads are not laid out with in two years then this act shall be void and of none effect Approved March 26 1836 between 7 and 8 years old vith calf Any person re urning and the public generally Detroit May 10 1836 lx Convention begun at the city of Detroit on Mon day the eleventh of Al ay 1835 By the ordinance of Congress of July 13 1787 providing for the government of the territory of the United States northwest of the river Ohio and for its division into states and their admission into the Union on an equal footing with the original states in all re specie whatever it is declared that there shall not be less than three nor more than five states in the slid territory: and that if more than three states should be established the additional state or states should be formed in the north of an east and west line drawn through the southern bend or ex treme of Like Michigan In pursuance of this pro vision Congress did determine that there should be more than three states By the act of Congress of January 11 1805 it is de clared that al! that part of the Indiana territory which lies north of a line drawn east from the southerly bend or extreme ot Lake Michigan until it shall in tersect Lake Erie and east of a line drawn from the said southerly bend through the middle of said lake to its northern extremity and thence due north to the northern of the United States shall consti tute a separate territory and be called Michigan and that its inhabitants shall be entitled to and en joy all and singular the rights privileges tin! ad vantages grunted and secured to the eople of the territory of the United States northwest of the river Oh by the ordinance aforesaid among the most important of which is the right guarantied therein oi admission into the Union whenever the territory shall have sixty thousand free inhabitants within its limits as established by Congress By a census taken on the day of 1834 pur suant to law it was ascertained that there were within the territory of Michigan as constituted by the actof Congress of January 11 1805 eighty seven thousand two hundred and seventy one inhabitants: And by an act of the Legislative Council of the ter ritory of Michigan the question was submitted to the people of the said territory whether they would proceed to the formation of a state govermnennt and make application to Congress for their admission in to the Union and the said question was decided by a very large majority in the affirmative We therefore the people of the territory uf Michi gan do by our de egates in convention assembled mutually agree to form ourselves into a free and in dependent state by the style and title of State of and do ordain and establish the fol lowing constitution for the government of the same The said state ofMichigan shall be bonnded by a line drawn east from the southerly bend or extreme of Lake Michigan until it shall intersect Lake Erie and east of a line from the said southerly bend through the middle of said lake to its northern ex tremity and thence due north to the northern boun dary of the United States: Provided however And it is hereby expressly declared that in claiming that so much of the southern boundary of this territory as adjoins the state oflndiana shall extend south of an east line passing ten miles rr rth of the southern ex treme di Lake Michigan as fixed by the act of Congress fur the northern boundary oflndiana the people of the state of Michigan do not claim posses sion and jurisdiction of that district of county until they shall be awarded to them by the proper tribunal: And provided also That the legislature of the state of Michigan shall be and they are hereby authorized to assent to such changes in the said southern boun dary as the interest ot butchered by the soldiery i sight of the vessel the schooner es caped to Matagorda NAVAL The Texian armed schooner Invincible Captain Brown fell in with the Mexican schooner Montezuma at anchor oil Brasos Santiao An action immediately took place with a running fight of several hours which terminated in the sinking of the Montezuma before she reached tlm shore to which she was running hen lasteen her varda were under water She was pre oarin to convoy to Galveston 2000 men the expe dition is now destroyed The Invincible was some out in her sails and rigging but had not a man woun dcd The fate of the crew is not known Improvement in Steam have seen in oneration the mode! of Doctor Blanton steam boat fc canals and from careful examination of his new plan and principle of displacing the water by his bow cylindrical wheel (which displaces it under the bottom ofthc boat and creates no resistance no wav in front at the sides nor behind the boat but a strong current under it and seems in every way to Md velocity) we have no hesitation in concurring In opinion with some distinguished navigators that it is well calculated for navigating canals without i jurmg the banks as well as shallow some one of the 89 members of the conven tion cannot designate the individual The fact of having introduced such a proposition carries with it no imputation It was referred to be cause it was thought to have a bearing upon the question oi the intention of the convention as to a very important part of their proceedings But as Mr Nor his friend appears anxious for some rea son to repudiate this fatherless proposition the mem bers of the convention who made the allegation complained of would doubtless cheerfully retract it if they could be satisfied that they were in error JOHN BIDDLE Th The Colorado had I overflowed its banks and the 1200 Mexicans can Mr Clay's favorite Land Bill passed the Senate the United States on the 4th inst by a vote of 25' to n0 There is not much prospect of Representatives of the State of Michigan 1 hat the act to provide for the assessment and collection of territorial taxes approved the 22d of April 1833 and the act to amend said act approved the 24th of De cember 1831 be so amended that the taxes to boas sessed and collected from and after the first day of January next on each commission merchant selling or vending ardent spirits twenty dollars on each other merchant or trader selling ardent spirits fif teen dollars on each other person thana merchant or trader who shall vend or barter ardent spirits by wholesale or retail by the authority of any incorpo rated city or village according to the provisions of any existing laws the sum ot fifteen dollars on each tavern keeper in any incorporated city vil lage the sum of fifteen dollars which
