4-E The Arizona Republic EO Sunday, Nov. 10, 1968 Auburn Surprises Tennessee, 28-14 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI) Auburn quarterback Loran Carter threw three touchdown passes, two of them to tailback Mike Currier, to lead the Tigers over fifth-ranked Tennessee, 28-14, last night and keep them atop the Southeast Conference standings. Carter connected on scoring Currier and on a 49-yard TD toss to end Tim Christian. Currier, who scored on three of the first four plays in which he participated, also ran a touchdown in from two yards away. Tennessee scored on a live-yard pass from quarterback Bubba Wyche to end Gary Kreis and a 37-yarder to end George Silbey. With 68,821 fans watching the second half of a double-header in which Alabama beat LSU, 16-7, in the afternoon passes of 10 and 14 yards to game, the Auburn defense kept the Vols bottled up most of the night. They covered Wyche's receivers and dumped the quarterback time and again behind the charges of tackles Jim Samford and David Campbell. TENNESSEE AUBURN More About Sun Devils Rout Utah Continued from Page E-l Utah led 7-0 after the first quarter, but the Devils blew it open with 29 points in the second period and 23 in the third. The second-quarter outburst was particularly gratifying for the Devils, who in previous games had been outscored 52-28 in the second stanza. The victory was ASU's fifth in seven games and left the Sun Devils 3-1 in the WAC race. Though their chances are slim, they're still mathematically in the running. NMS Romps, 47-21 LAS CRUCES. N.M. (AP) The running of New Mexico State University freshman Ron (Pol James and passing of quarterback Loy Hayes battered the winless Wichita State football team, 47-21, last night. Hayes threw touchdown strikes of 69. 23 and 28 yards. Rushing o. 4iiiun Poison ijroth Collins Tvier Sou Ids Passing Groin Collins P Receiving No. Ncsworthy ? Colorado State's Tarry Harrison won the individual title and New Mexico captured the team crown for the fourth time yesterday in the eighth annual Western Athletic Conference cross country championships. Harrison, runnerup in last year's NCAA 10,000 meters, covered the hilly, four-mile South Mountain course in 20:11, breaking the course record of 20:39.5, held by Arizona State's Jerry Jobski. Jobski finished second in 20:17 as the Sun Devils edged pre-meet favorite Texas-El Paso for second place. Trailing UTEP in fourth was Arizona, followed by Brigham Young, Colorado State, Wyoming and Utah. Fullback Noki Fuimaono did a yeoman's job on offense for the Wildcats, accounting for 98 rushing yards. And Nelson again led the UA defense with 11 unassisted tackles and four assists. In all, it was a good effort for Mudra's club and a key win. After all, Arizona hasn't won in Colorado since 1934, when it beat Colorado State, 7-3. In 44-degree weather, the Wildcats impressed the 32,196 fans attending. And they also had to impress a group attending from El Paso the Sun Bowl committee. They'll really be watching UA now with games coming up against Utah, Wyoming and Arizona State.
