Incorporated in "The Good Sound" is the best in music, news, sports and weekend programming, with strong personalities.

He made several organ recordings in the middle and late 1920s, including one never released in which he made versions of Bach's Fugues in Minor and Minor in straight and jazz fashion. Victor would do the public a service by releasing some of these records. Between 1934 and 1942 Waller recorded more than 400 nor part of the Vintage releases. Only two or three are being included on each album. The most recent Waller record, "African Ripples" (Victor LPV-562), contains a piano solo of the same name.

The piece, one of his most imaginative solos, is a jaunty combination of rag and song and has some sturdy bass-clef work. It moves easily from the ragtime section into straight improvisation and then into a formal written section. Waller's pianistic excellence came after long and hard training. He began piano lessons when he was 6 and by the time he was 16 his mentor was James P. Johnson, the dean of Harlem stride ings Waller made for the company between 1926 and 1943.

Already Victor has eight Waller albums in the catalog, and there is still much more that needs to be released. Most of the Vintage albums feature Waller with his rhythm (usually Herman Autrey, trumpet; Gene Sedric, tenor saxophone; Al Casey, guitar, and different personnel on bass and drums) playing insipid popular songs of the day. However, they swung the tunes into something listen-able. The mock tenderness or bawdy humor in Waller's singing are the most interesting things about some of the records. His huge hands, which allowed him to easily grasp tenths on the keyboard, moved fellow pianist George Shearing to say that shaking hands with Waller was "like grabbing a bunch of bananas." His capacity for liquor and food was unbelievable. He polished off more than a fifth of whisky every day and he considered 12 hamburgers and six bottles of beer "a snack." Waller was no glutton, it was said. He was part of the age which produced men with expansive vision and a multitude of talents. The large amounts of food he consumed were necessary for the lavish energy he spent NEVERTHELESS, his disregard of doctors' advice to stop drinking helped bring on his death at 39 in December 1943. Although most people may remember him as a great en-entertainer, Waller also was one of the great songwriters this country has produced.

Consider only a few of his tunes that have become standards: "Honeysuckle Rose," "Ain't Misbehaving," "Squeeze Me," "Blue Turning Gray Over You" and "Black and Blue." Waller was one of the last Harlem stride pianists. In his last 10 years, however, he began breaking away from the stride tradition of oompah bass and trebal arpeggios and started playing a smoother, more evenly spaced bass line and put increased emphasis on a treble line that broke more with original melodies. WALLER'S influence fell squarely on Art Tatum, who once said: "Fats, man, that's' where I come from." Contemporary jazz pianists Cecil Taylor and Andrew Hill listen closely to him today.
