D- IC PHASED ALL EDITIONS Phoenix, Tuesday, Oct. 29, 1974 The Arizona Republic C-1 Obituaries Croaff, 56, dies; public defender Vernon B. Croaff. 56, an attorney here since 1945 and the first public defender appointed in Arizona, died Sunday in Doctors Hospital. Services will be at 11:30 a.m.

Wednesday in Paradise Chapel Funeral Home, 3934 E. Indian School, with burial in Memory Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Croaff, of 2034 E. Glendale, was appointed in 1965 as Arizona's first public defender.

Prior to his appointment, he was an unsuccessful candidate for Maricopa County Attorney in 1964. He had been Phoenix city prosecutor from 1961 to 1964, and chief criminal deputy for the county attorney from 1957 to 1960. Mr. Croaff was born in Phoenix, was graduated from Phoenix Union High School, took a master's degree at Arizona State University, and studied law at Willamette University, Salem, Ore. He became an attorney in 1945, and authored the retirement plan 1 for City of Phoenix employes.

He is survived by his wife, Velma; his mother, Carolyn B. Croaff; two sons, Evan and Adley; two daughters, Mrs. Ronna Franke Miss Marva Croaff, and five grandchildren. Harold K. Deady SUN CITY Rosary for Harold K.

Deady, 75. a retired mechanical engineer, will be at 7 p.m. today at Lundberg Golden Door Chapel, 11211 Michigan Youngtown. Mass will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in St.

Born in Rock Island, she came to Arizona in 1959 from Muscatine, and worked for 10 years in central supply at Tempe Community Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Robert: four sons, Robert Thomas, Richard and Stephen; two daughters, Mrs. Betty J.

Melcher Mortuary, 43 S. Stapley Drive. Carolyn Bendheim. Carolyn Jane Bendheim, 21, who was born in Phoenix, died in London, England, Oct. 22 of injuries resulting from a horseback riding accident.

Burial was in London. Survivors of Miss Bendheim, 6111 N. Palo Cristi, Paradise Valley, include her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Otto Bendheim; sisters, Vicki and Margo, and brothers, Paul and Fred.

Reuben H. Martin SCOTTSDALE Services for Reuben H. Martin, 56. of 16624 N. Second Phoenix, will be at 10 a.m.

Wednesday in the Thunderbird Academy School Chapel, with burial to follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Mr. Martin died Sunday at Tempe Community Hospital. Born in Cleveland, N.D., he came to Arizona in 1950 from Huntington Beach, Calif. He was employed as a farming and production manager for the past 18 years at Thunderbird Academy, and was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nerissa; two Comstock daughters, and Mrs. Mrs. Marilyn M. Champion; a son, Gene: his mother, Hanna Martin: two brothers, David and John; a sister, Mrs. Esther Hamilton and five grandchildren.

Hayden Road Norma Valenzuela MESA Funeral Mass for Norma Valenzuela, 16, of 615 S. Hobson, will be at 10 a.m. today at Queen of Peace Church, 36 W. First with burial to follow in Mesa Cemetery. She died Friday at Desert Samaritan Hospital from injuries suffered in an auto accident.

Miss Valenzuela was born in Tucson and was a student at Mesa High School. She is survived by her mother, Rita Medina; her father, Juan Valenzuela; two brothers, Juan and Sergio; three sisters, Glenda, Gravuela and Aida; grandmother Petra Avelard, and grandfather Eugenio Udiarto. Arrangements are being handled by Larry J. Melcher Mortuary, 43 S. Stapley Drive.

Dr. Van D. Clark dies; school counseling chief Dr. Van D. Clark.

64, head of the Counseling and Guidance Department at Camelback High School, died Sunday in Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Clark, 2326 E. Clarendon, came to Phoenix in 1945 after serving Air Force in World 'Warne and was employed in the Phoenix Union High School District since 1948. He had articles published in professional journals and made contributions to the field of children's literature.

He was president of Arizona School Counselors' Association, a member of the National SCA, the Arizona and National Personnel and Guidance Association, Camelback Teachers' Association, Parent Teacher Student Association, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Sigma fraternities. Dr. Clark received his early education in his native Deming, N.M., and earned the bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of New Mexico. He did post graduate work at New York University and received his doctoral degree from Arizona State University.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne; a daughter, Mrs. Vandi Schilleci; a son, Perk Clark; and sisters, Mrs. Grace Pratt and Mrs. Carrie Payton. There will be no services and the family suggests contributions to the Division of Radiation Oncology, Arizona Medical Center, University of Arizona, Tucson.

Wednesday in St. Anthony's Church for Leo A. Bivens, 27, of 6229 S. Sixth who died Sunday in a Phoenix hospital. Rosary will be at 8 p.m.

today in the Whitney and Murphy Funeral Home chapel, 330 N. Second Ave. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Mr.

Bivens was a four year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Marine Reserves. He was a member of St. Anthony's Church. Surviving are his wife.

Wortham Mary E. Wortham, 49, of 3008 E. Larkspur Drive, a housewife, died Sunday at John C. Lincoln Hospital. Services will be held at 7 p.m.

Francis Xavier Church for George Walsh, 57, of 4620 N. 10th St. Mr. Walsh was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today in Arcadia Funeral Home chapel, 4800 E. Indian School. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.

Mr. Walsh retired after 30 years with the Southern Pacific Railroad as a car inspector. Later, he worked for the Arizona Sash and Door retiring last June. He was a member of the Southern Pacific Brotherhood and St. Francis Xavier Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; two sons, David and James; two daughters, Mary Frances Walsh and Mrs. Patricia Weeks; a brother and three sisters out of state; and seven grandchildren. Willie McReynolds AVONDALE Services for Mrs. Willie M. McReynolds, 88, will be at 2 p.m.

Stapley Drive. Eda Belle Snyder A memorial service to follow private cremation for Mrs. Eda Belle Snyder, 86, of Sedona, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Valley View Cemetery in Sedona. She died Saturday at Marcus Lawrence Hospital in Cottonwood.

Mrs. Snyder was born. in Chicago, and came to Arizona for the first time in 1921. She moved to New Mexico, then returned to Arizona in 1934. She was a member of the Church of the Red Rocks in Sedona.

She is survived by a son, Ted; a daughter, Mrs. Eda Belle Crawford, and five grandchildren. Local arrangements are being handled by Camelback Sunset Chapel, 301 W. Camelback. Forest W.

Spencer Forest W. Spencer, 65, of 4639 E. Almeria Road, died Saturday in John C. Lincoln Hospital. Services will be held at graveside at Greenwood Memorial Park, 2300 W.

Southern Ave. Mr. Smith, of 2330 W. Monroe, died Saturday in Good Samaritan Hospital. He was president of BluSapphire Pools and a recognized builder of Olympic diving and swimming pools.

He was a commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America for 10 years. Survivors include his wife, Edna; two daughters, Mrs. Wayne Watkins and Mrs. Frank Estes; his mother, Mrs. Edna Ester Hegman; two brothers, George Smith and Dick Smith; and two sisters, Mrs.

Dorothy Creed and Mrs. Rita May Munn. H. V. Renteria WINKELMAN Mass for Hermenejildo V.

Renteria, 86, who died Oct. 24 in the Kennecott Hospital at Kearny, will be at 9 a.m. today in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery at Hayden. Mr.

Renteria was a retired copper caster for American Smelting and Refining Co. Survivors include his wife, Reyes; his children, Ralph, Nasario, Mrs. Angela Perez, Beatrice Fuentes, and Mrs. Minnie Ross; 22 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Griffith Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Spectators applaud concession robbery OMAHA, Neb. (AP) A crowd shouted and cheered as a gunman robbed the concession stand at the city auditorium of an undetermined amount of money, police said. Officers said a crowd of about 40 to 50 persons were around the refreshment stand when a man produced a gun and demanded money. They said the crowd watched the robbery and cheered as the suspect fled. Jay Datus Ettie Ryan Ettie Young Ryan, 83, who had been a teacher 35 years in the Murphy School District until retiring in 1958, died Saturday in Desert Terrace Nursing Home.

Mrs. Ryan, 3114 E. Earll Drive, came to Clifton in 1898 from her native Texas and lived in Phoenix since 1919. Survivors include a son, Dow B. Ryan; a sister, Mrs.

Carrie P. Lawrence: and four grandchildren. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in A. L.

Simon and Jude Cathedral, 6351 N. 27th Ave. for Alfred Perrone, 54, who died Sunday in John C. Lincoln Hospital. Mr.

Perrone, of 9609 N. 42nd Drive, worked as a design engineer for Sperry Flight Division for 20 years. He was a native of New York, coming to Phoenix in 1965. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Sts.

Simon and Jude Cathedral. Rosary will be at 8 p.m. today in Grimshaw Bethany Chapel, 710 W. Bethany Home, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Jay Datus, 60, who was nationally known for his portraits and murals and was founder and director of Kachina School of Art Phoenix, died Sunday in Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr. Datus, 3801 N. 30th was listed in Who's Who in American Art, also Who's Who in America, Illinois and the Southwest and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts of London. Among his works is "The Pageant of Arizona Progress," an eight panel mural in the Arizona State Department of Library Archives, painted in 1937-38, and "Foundations of Confidence" in the Arizona Public Service main office, formerly the home office of the First National Bank when that mural was painted in 1955-56.

Mr. Datus attended the Worcester (Mass.) Museum School of Fine Arts and Yale School of Art and studied portraiture with Wyman Adams in New York and London. He formerly wrote an art column for The Arizona Republic. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Masonic Lodge 43, Scottsdale, York Rite and El Zaribah Shrine. Survivors include his wife, Edette; a daughter, Mrs.

Cynthia Wilkinson; two brothers and a sister; and a grandchild, Private services and cremation were arranged by Paradise Chapel Funeral Home. Vernon B. Croaff Elmer M. Foster APACHE JUNCTION Elmer M. Foster, 91, of Apache Junction, a retired farmer, died Sunday in a Phoenix hospital.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth: 0.K. Foster; and Clinton B. Foster: a daughter, Mrs. Stanley Lowell; a sister out-of-state; five grandchildren, and one. great-grandchild.

Services and cremation will be private, GibbonsBunker Garden Chapel announced. Jessie Maneely Jessie K. Maneely, 56, a microbiology technician 15 years at Phoenix Indian Medical Center, died Sunday in Phoenix Medi Center. Miss Maneely, 6320 N. 16th was graduated from Arizona State University and had served in 1 the Womens Army Auxiliary Corps in World War II.

Born in Brewster, Ohio, she came to Phoenix in 1952 from Youngstown, Ohio. Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Margaret Maneely; four brothers and three sisters out of state' and 12 nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Glendale Resthaven Park, 6290 W.

Northern. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Lundberg Golden Door Chapel, 11211 Michigan Youngtown. Joseph W. Latapie PRESCOTT Services for Joseph William Latapie, 57, who died Oct.

23 in 1 Prescott, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ruffner Funeral Home. Private interment will follow. Mr. Latapie was a truck driver for Concrete Services.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he moved here 1969. Survivors include his children, Robert and Mrs. Joanne Arias: his mother, Mrs. Mary Walker, and a sister and brother out of state. Karen M.

J. Calvert PRESCOTT Services for Mrs. Karen Marie Johnson Calvert, 83. who died Monday at Whipple Veterans Administration Center, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Ruffner Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso. Mrs. Calvert was nurse and served as an Army nurse in World War I with two years service. After the war she was a nurse with the newly created Veterans Administration was with it from 1921 to 1956.

She had served at Whipple from 1934 until her retirement in 1956, and made her home in Prescott all that time. Survivors include two nieces out of state and a half brother in Denmark. Friends may call from 5 to p.m. Wednesday at Ruffner Funeral Home. The family prefers contributions to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Ruth E. Stevens SUN CITY Services for Ruth Eleanor Stevens, 79, a registered nurse, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lundberg Sunland Chapel, 15826 Del Webb Blvd. Burial will follow at Sunland Memorial Park. Mrs.

Stevens, of 10337 Caron Drive, died Sunday in Boswell Memorial Hospital. Survivors include a brother. Elbert G. Stevens, and two sisters, Mrs. Harriette Bellinger and Mrs.

Lulu S. Wood. Cecil Schuster Mrs. Cecil Schuster, 69, of 1120 E. Lawrence, a Chicago native who came here from Milwaukee in 1950, died Sunday in St.

Luke's Hospital. Survivors include her husband, Maurice, two sisters and a brother. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sinai Mortuary, 4538 N. 16th St.

Family court's process absurd, says NY judge NEW YORK (AP) After six months on the bench, Simeon Golar, former New York City commissioner of human rights, says the family court is "an absurd process" with a noble mission it can no longer fulfill. He told a symposium here that because of recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, defense maneuvers and administrative procedures, tens of thousands of youngsters who reach juvenile court are neither punished nor rehabilitated but are educated in disrespect and contempt for the law. He recommended that "we start talking again about right and wrong and about accountability" and that "we acknowledge that punishment within limits can be appropriate." Californian is killed in collision of 2 cars RIVERBANK, Calif.

(UPI) A two-car collision Saturday outside this Stanislaus County community killed Robert T. Hix, 21, Oakdale. The California Highway Patrol said Hix died when his small foreign car collided with a station wagon driven by Keith E. Hootman, 35, Salida, at an intersection. The five persons in the Hootman car were not hurt..
