Davie Avenue Sir Brawley died riday morning at 5:45 at his homeon Davie avenue Mr Brawley had 'been in failing health for the past six months his condition becoming se rious about six weeks ago or the past week he had been confined to bed and his condition for several days had been very critical Mr Ezekiel McNeely Brawley was a son of the late Daniel Johnston Brawley and Mrs Elizabeth Brawley and was born and reared at the Brawley home about six miles west of Statesville He had made his home in States ville practically all of his life and for the past several years had been in the retail grocery business Mr Brawley married Miss Mollie Reid of Asheville who survives him with two sons Messrs Clyde and Reid Brawley and three daughters Mrs Clyde Campbell and Misses Grace Helen Brawley The first case called after the open ing of the Iredell court at 10:20 this morning was against Lei Barnes colored charged with driyimr a car while under (influence of liquor the hearing result ing in a verdict of not guilty It took a minute or so to get start ed on the ease in which the colored pnan was involved the difficulty aris ing over Solicitor James Sharpe not being able to figure out the hand writing on the warrant The solicitor on first glance at the writing thought the defendant's name was Lee Borneo and called out for the man of that un familiar name No answer coming a deputy sheriff called out in open court only to be greeted by profound silence in the house of justice At this point the solicitor after looking further at the name tried calling for and this time the colored defendant came around thebar Before the hear ing was completed it leaked out that the name was Barnes Will ray colored who was up for larceny and receiving entered a nle of not guilty but Judge Starr found him guilty after hearing the evidence in the case Just before taking a recess for lunch at 12:30 this afternoon Solicitor Sharpe read from the evil records that Will Gray had plead guilty tb larceny in court in November 1927 and was given a suspended sentence of eight months on the roads sentence to become ef fective in case of any future law vi olations Jqdge Starr ordered that Gray serve the eight months of the previous suspended sentence and two months on the larceny an 1 re' count this morning of ten months to ie with Iredell force Barney Watt and who were apprehended last week in North Iredell having in their posses sion 13 gallons of liquor were found guilty of transporting and possessing liquor Watt the older man was sentenc ed to six months on the roads for transporting prayer for judgmentvas continued for two years on the fount for possessing Knox Brown 19 who told the court" Jie was only accompanying the other man and had never been in court be fore Springs orph anage who was seriously injured when she fell from a window at the orphanage infirmary Saturday morn ing remains practically unchanged to report from the Davis Hospital where the little girl is a pa tient Hee condition is considered serious The child struck her head against a concrete floor near the basement window of the infirmary when she fell and was rendered unconscious not two day tour of inspection of outstanding farm demonstration Work in Iredell county conducted by Coun ty Agent A Morow closed I riday afternoon in north Iredell Thursday was devoted to a visit farms south of Statesville many farmers from the northern pan of the county joining in that tour ri day the scenes were shifted to sec tion of the county north of States ville the majority of the farmers on this tour being from the southern por tions of Iredell Statesville business men were represented both days By making the trips in two days Mr Morrow found that time was giv en for more thorough inspection andthat it gave the farmers of the north ern and southern parts of the county an opportunity to get into closer re lationship with each other Therewore about 80 farmers in all who (joined the tours on the two days i Many of the farmers expressed sur prise at the excellent results which they observed in lespedeza aitalta and sweet clover crops used for hay soil improvement ami pastures The first stop on the riday tour was at the A Dulin farm just east of Statesville on the Salisbury road A field of alfalfa was observed here the ground having been broken deeply after wheat and given an ap plication of lime and acid phosphate Mr Morow called attention here io the importance of giving a crop alfalfa a top dressing every sumnn At Mr farm Chambersburg township fields of beans corn and lespedeza were see the fine crop of corn having followed vetch arm machinery was also ob served A feature of the stop at Mr attractive homestead was the exhibit by his boys of their club heifers poultry and equipment rof his pon Carter Beaver was also hn in teresting part of the stop here Be fore proceeding the group were treat ed to lemonade and were given a sack of cantaloupes to be used for lunch later in the day At Mr A farm the visitors looked over a fine herd of pigs that will be ready for the mar ket by grazing on alfalfa followed by ground barley Mr Beaver piled in the automobiles a lot of fine water melons for the tourists to use for lunch A short field stop was made on I he Yount farm now operated By Mr Bowling showing the enect cutting a part of a field of alfalfa leaving the rest uncut The portion that had lecn cut recently had a bet ter growth than the other A tour over Mr Crawford's estate revealed that Mr Crawford is a great believec in red clover rom his three arce plot of alfalfa he has had two cuttings making 14000 pounds from the first and 9000 pounds from the second His oat crop runs between 1000 and 2000 bushels every year Hi herd of 100 hogs were out on the pasture He al so fyas a number of sheep A most enjoyable feature of the plop herp was the lunch which was spread under the fine shade trees in the spacious lawn of the Crawfordhome The visitors carried lunch Thi was supplemented by milk cof fee grapes etc served by Mrs WB Crawford and thcwatermelons and cantaloupes previously donated by (the Beaver Brothers Before leavingthis attractive estate thc visitors en joyed a look at Mrs fine flock of poultry The next stop was at the home of V4r Dunlap who has found 'sheep raising a profitable line of agriculture pays the best of any remarked Mr Dunlap as the fine specimens of wool and mut ton producers were filed out of the 'barn before the visitors A field of Iclover showing the results of lime was next gone over 'Ihe field was 'limed five years ago two or three uul ttivated crops were grown and the good stand of volunteer clover ob served wa attributed entirely to the ilimc Going from Bethany to Union Grove township the visitors werenext making observations on the farm of Mr Huie Templeton near Jen nings Here in north Iredell cotton of the best quality is grown the 'best boiled we have seen in two one of the fanners remarked uur fteen years ago Mr Templeton bought Hope reports that officer have this 95 acre farm going in debt for far been unable to apprehend it and it contained oniy iu acres oi Jand under cultivation The rest was covered with briers pines gullcyer hillside and rocks He now owns oneof the most attractive places and most fertile farms in the northern portion of the county Hal
