Sims open exhibitions vs. Bucks without Lay toW UBUC ITY By DAVE HICKS Republic Sports Writer GREEN' BAY, Wis. It was strictly a collaborative effort over the summer, but Phoenix' Suns and Milwaukee's Bucks go their selfish ways beginning tonight. They meet at 6 o'clock (Arizona time) in Brown County Arena here as both National Basketball Association clubs barge Into preseason exhibitions. During the "off" season, several Suns and Bucks blended talents to dart unbeaten (19-0) through the Southern California Summer Pro League.

One of the summer sparks was Mike Bantom, Phoenix' No. 1 college draft choice, who was named that league's top rookie. The 6-9 forward from St. Joseph's may well be a starter before the 1973-4 season concludes. Meanwhile, a onetime Suns starter, Mo remained in Phoenix to become an ex-Sun.

Layton, who averaged seven points in B5 games last season, will be placed on waivers unless the Suns can negotiate a deal for him. General manager Jerry Colangelo continued to pursue trade possibilities Tuesday, but had no success in discussions with fifteen teams and Portland remained the lone opportunity. The Suns Thursday are matched against the Virginia Squires in Norfolk in one of 28 NBA-ABA interleague bookings in preseason. The NBA ruled such confrontations 15-8 in 1971 and 27-9 a year ago. While the Suns under new coach John MacLeod are seeking offensive balance and defensive respectability, the Bucks under Larry Costello are eyeing a fourth consecutive 60-win season.

They became the first club to achieve a string of three such seasons when they went 60-22 in 1972-3. Although forward Bobby Dandridge has yet to report, Milwaukee's usual arsenal of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Lucius Allen et al has been complemented by Fritz Williams (acquired from Golden State) and rookie forwards Harry Rodgers from St. Louis and Clyde Turner from Minnesota. The teams were an identical 6-2 in preseason contests last year, but what ensued wasn't all that pleasing for the Suns. They lost a coach Bill van Berda Kolff and finished a disappointing 38-44 in the NBA Pacific.

Second-year forward Corky Calhoun was excused to attend the funeral of his grandfather Tuesday, but is expected to be a starter tonight along with Connie Hawkins and Neal Walk in frontcourt, Charlie Scott and Dick Van Arsdale in backcourt. Koadranners join WHA or '74-75 The ArizonaRepubiic Sept. 19, 1973 (Section D) Page 1 'Nice to be Wells Phoenix becomes 15th city in hockey league By FRANK GIANELLI Phoenix' Roadrunners announced Tuesday they will operate in the World Hockey Association next year. And side effects surfaced immediately. They include: Possible cancellation of a scheduled exhibition game here Oct.

3 by the National League Toronto Maple Leafs; Shift of the present Western Hockey League franchise, under which the Runners will play out this season, to another site next year possibly Tucson; Long-range retention of now-shelved hopes of joining the National Hockey League, that possibility resting on ultimate merger of the two rival major leagues. Roadrunner president Jim Wells made the joint announcement in Phoenix to coincide with one at Santa Ana, by WHA president Gary Davidson. "It's nice to he wanted," Wells said. "And the WHA wanted us now. There was no question we would have been granted National League franchise ultimately but that could have been three, five, or seven years in the future.

Our studies of fan reaction showed us Phoenix wanted major hockey now." The going rate for a WHA franchise reportedly is $2 million. The last NHL expansion rights cost $6 miilirm. There have been indications future grants will be $1 million or more greater. As 15th WHA member, Phoenix joins the Los Angeles Sharks, Vancouver Blazers. Alberta Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota Saints, Chicago Cougars, Cleveland Crusaders, Toronto Torus, Quebec Nardiques.

New England Whalers, New York Golden Blades and Houston Acros of this year's lineup plus Cincinnati and Indianapolis, which were granted franchises last week. Wells noted "I'd be lying if I said there haven't been some phone calls about our scheduled game with Toronto. What Toronto intends to do, I can't say at this time. I can see Jim Gregory's (Toronto general manager) position. It may be they would be embarrassed in their own league if they came down and played us.

That has not been decided." In jumping to the WHA, thejRoadrunners become the first team to move in toto. They've had six prior seasons in the Western League and last year won the league and Patrick Cup playoff titles. "Sandy Hucul will remain our coach," Wells said. "I've been on record that so long as I occupy this chair, Sandy will coach the Roadrunners. As for other personnel all jobs are open.

The guys who can earn a job will stay with the club. We think we have a number who can play in the WHA." At Tucson, where he's preparing the team for a set of exhibitions starting 25 with the Los Angeles Sharks, Hucul said "there were a lot of smiles when I told the guys about the WHA. I look forward to this as a real challenge. We have a few who can make it in the majors a good nucleus of a major league club. It'll be interesting to see how we measure up when we play Los Angeles, and if we get to play Toronto." As for shifting the Western League franchise, Wells noted "this will be determined after discussions with other members of the league.

We may move it to another Western city (Tucson and Albuquerque being prime sites) and continue to operate it as a development club, or we may sell to interests within any city that qualifies and desires a franchise. Wells said "There is great interest in Tucson. I can't think of a better place to base a franchise. Whether the Roadrunners should operate there will require some study." fft'iirii'iiiiiiiaimmiiiMirtiiii mv mi naH-na iail a1) ft I I i I t) 1 i iT i. Giusti then went to 3-2 on Hahn before the Met pinch hitter stroked his game-winner. The Pirates scored four of their runs in the fourth.

Bob Moose's walk, Dave Cash's infield single and a walk to Al Oliver loaded the bases before Richie Zisk singled home a pair of runs. Manny Sanguillen then lined a double down the left-field line for two more. The Pirates staged a counter-rally in the ninth which fell one run short. Bob Apodaca, making his first major league appearance, came in to pitch the ninth for the Mets. The rookie hurler immediately walked Gene Clines and Associated Press PITTSBURGH Don Hahn singled in two inns to break a 4-4 tie as the New York Mets rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night.

Hahn's one-out single up the middle capped a five-run Met uprising in the ninth inning. The defeat. Snorls Today Associated Press MEMPHIS-Bill van Breda Kolff, new coach of the Memphis Tarns, met his players Tuesday and said he could not pass up a chance to coach the team that had the worst record in the American Basketball Association last season.

Believe me, I'll be scanning cut lists of other teams to see how we can help ourselves," He has 10 veterans in camp, two signed rookies and several free agents.

Seven of the veterans were unsigned Tuesday and Van Breda Kolff said signing them "is something I'll have to contend with as soon as possible." No amount of glossing will cover up a few points: The Devils played their usually sloppy game, with mistake piled on mistake; Woody Green had a terrible night; ASU's offensive line certainly has plenty of room for improvement; Thank God for Danny White. He and a couple of the defensive hands were about the only standouts. Foot-speed again carried the battle. Kven Woody admitted "I sure played bad." lie sure did his worst game since donning a Devil uniform. I am convinced that no football team in the country can make as many mistakes as Arizona State and still In.

Speed will erase a lot of misctics, except when you play a good team. Then those undisciplined ways catch up with you, as was the case last year against Air Force. The Devils' schedule this year is one of their weaker ones. There may have been quarterbacks at Arizona State with more physical attributes than White. But I question whether there has ever been a smarter one or a cooler head under fire.

Oregon completely dominated the first half and could very easily have led 14-zip at intermission. White moved the team 81 yards in two plays just before the half to forge a deadlock that allowed ASU to regroup. It is a tribute to Arizona State's rise to national prominence that I am nitpicking over a victory. Back in the days when 1 covered the team, a win any kind of a win was sufficient. But now the Devils are poll and bowl conscious and Green is trying to convince one-and-all that he is the best running back in the country.

The Devils long ago outstripped their schedule. When you go into every game expected to win, the only gauge is how well you perform. The Devils did not particularly distinguish themselves in Eugene. It is a testimonial to their potential that they won in spite of that. Associated Press ATLANTA Henry Aaron resembles the eye of a hurricane.

There is a constant swirl of activity around him as the 30-year-old Atlanta Braves' star closes in on Babe Ruth's career home run record of 714. But the man himself is so calm you wonder if he realizes what he's about to do strike down the most revered baseball record in the game. Autograph seekers are everywhere. Broadcasters and writers press him for interviews. Photographers are constantly wanting one more shot.

The pressure on an ordinary human ould appear to be impossible to withstand. But, Hank Aaron is an extraordinary individual. His accomplishments prove it. He was asked about pressure, especially that kind that might be on him this winter if he fails to break the mark in the final 10 games this season. "The same kind I'm under right now," Aaron said.

"None." lie moved another notch hearer Monday night when he smacked No. 711 off San Diego's Gary Ross in the eighth inning of a 7-0 Atlanta victory. "I still have a shot," he said. "Yep, it enhances my chances. "I'd like to hit 714 this year, but it doesn't bother me," he said.

"If 1 can't, I feel next year should do It. 1 just do the best I can at all times, whether I have 713 home runs or 730 or none. It's a job I have, my job, and I go out and do it." Aaron's latest home run came before a crowd of only 1.362 a record low In Atlanta. Among those in attendance, however, was Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, who had announced that Aaron would throw out the first pitch at the 1973 World Series. "I was ciuilc surprised." Aaron said of the offer from the commissioner.

"Usually opening day belongs 'o the President or the commissioner himself. It's been a long time since I've been to a World Series. I'll cherish this one." "I feel like the 1.3011 who came arc entitled to see you play ashardasyoii can," Aaron said. "You hit 'em whenever- you can, whether there's 52.000 or 1,300 at the game." Sun Angel head resigns Miles W. (Mike) Casleel, the Sun Angel Foundation's executive director since 1949, will retire soon.

Casteel, 78, will step down in favor of ex-Arizona State assistant football coach Gene Felker. Casteel was head football coach at the University of Arizona from 1939 to 1948, winning 46 losing 26, and tying three before becoming head of the foundation. Many of the Tarns veterans had been working out on their own in preparation for an exhibition schedule that begins Thursday.

"I'd rather be here preparing the team for a while longer before playing exhibitions right off the bat. but that's a necessary evil," Van Breda Kolff said.
