ALL EDITIONS Extra 2 The Arizona Republic SW Wednesday, February 27, 1985 mnrii-mnii ji.j. Hispanic stars aid S. Phoenix event sitfterttairoers happy to Bend ttheir support to center tf und-raiser 1L Lji -'mm1 Esteban Veldz W' via Miguel Cancel, former lead singer of Menudo, was the youngest star. The 17-year-old Puerto Rican postponed work on an album, which was to have been released this week to attend the event. Establishing a center that will include youthful offenders among those served is important to Theresa Saldafla, president of Victims for Victims and star of such movies as Raging Bull, Sophia and her own life story.

"One reason I'm happy to be here is because I am a Hispanic actress. The other is because I am a victim-of crime," she said. "I feel that on both levels, I have a strong interest in what BHA is doing." Eddie Velez, who plays fashion' designer Julio Morales on the television series, Berrengers, said it is important for young Hispanics to have Hispanic role models. "Since I have had the opportunity to be an entertainer, like the others here, I think it would be wrong for any of us not to attend a function like this and to support, it," he said. Role models also are important to Veldz.

The new center will be. named for Ignacio C. Conchos. Conchos, a south Phoenix police officer, was killed July 1, 1982, in a shoot-out with a bank-robbery suspect in a bar. Conchos, a regular visitor to BHA's youth center, La Nueva Vida, presented workshops to the youths and counseled them.

According to Velo'z, he was on his way to the center the day he was killed. Several corporations in the Valley also are helping out. Prime sponsor for the event was the Miller Brewing Co. and its local distributor, Shamrock Distributing. It is important that a man leave his mark in this life.

Many leave sad or bloody legacies. Others leave beautiful ones. These are converted into seeds that grow and later flower to benefit humanity. Ricardo Montalban, actor One such seed received special nurturing recently. A group of Hispanic entertainers from Hollywood was in the Valley to help make sure an ambitious project spearheaded by BHA Community Corp.

does not die. BHA, a social-service agency based in south Phoenix, is trying to raise funds for a children's center in the area. Its president, Esteban Veldz, was able to secure the stars' appearance at a fund-raising dinner. Montalban, founder of Nosotros a group established to encourage Hispanics to enter the motion-picture and television industry and host for the event, was very clear, about why he came to Phoenix. "Esteban has planted a seed that long after he has disappeared will continue to yield benefits to children who deserve it," Montalban said.

"At the same time, and through Esteban's example, they also will be able to plant seeds." The efforts of Velo'z and others involved with BHA have been geared toward the south Phoenix community, which has a large Hispanic population. The proposed children's center would emphasize youth and family services as well as provide assistance for a variety of community needs. Other celebrities shared their reasons for participating in the Evening with the Stars Children's Benefit at the Hyatt Regency in Phoenix. i little bit of Hollywood came i to the Valley recently to benefit south Phoenix families. Hispanic celebrities joined nearly 600 local residents to raise money for a children's center that would provide day care, counseling, information and other services, all under one roof.

The Hyatt Regency was the scene for the Evening with the Stan Children's Benefit, to which actor Ricardo Montalba'n's Nosotros Inc. of Hollywood played host and which was organized by BHA Community a social-service agency based in south Phoenix. Those attending got to talk to stars such as Montalba'n, comedian Paul Rodriguez and singer Miguel Cancel, a former member of the group Menudo. Actors Julie Carmen (Gloria), Eddie Velez (Berrengers), Theresa Saldana (Raging Bull) and Jerry Velasco (El Makficio) also were part of the gala. The reason that entertainers and community members had gathered, however, was not lost in the glitter.

A documentary on BHA Community Corp. was featured, along with dinner and a dance. Esteban Veldz, president of BHA, said, "We are proud of the services we offer now, but they're (located) all over the city. "We'd like to centralize them." Currently, the agency's administrative offices at 1818 S. 16th St.

are leased from Phoenix for $1 a year. The agency also leases space at several other locations. The idea for a children's center was born two years ago at a conference sponsored by BHA. "We need to be in our own place," Velo'z said. "The city of Phoenix has been tremendous to us," he added, "but we need something ot our own, 10OFF with this coupon I 6 KITS BURGER FISH I 4141 N.

The state Department of Correc-J tions promised $300,000 if BHA' came up with a facility, so the agency set out to raise at least $60,000 in start-up money in one year.

Velo'z estimates the facility would cost $350,000, not including the land. Plans call for construction of a new building because of the difficulty in finding suitable sites in south Phoenix, Velo'z said. According to Velo'z, the funds being gathered will be used as "talking money" in negotiating the purchase of property and getting loans. The proposed center will provide several services, including: A day-care center. Primary prevention work to help make sure children receive an adequate education.

Family services, including individual and group counseling. Day-treatment program, where young offenders receive individual therapy and couseling for five to six hours a day in lieu of being incarcerated.
