Mt'PUBLIG Castro's 'Little Brother' Raul Viewed as Heir to Guevara Mexican Notebook Pros, Cons on TV Bullfights Sunday, Oct. 15, 1967 The Arizona Republic B-3 By FRANCIS L. McCARTHY UPI Latin American Editor Big flap in the Communist world today and particularly in Moscow and Havana is who is to succeed the late Ernesto (Che) Guevara as field commander for "Operation Subversion" in Latin America. Best bet as of now would seem to be Raul Castro, 38, By GARY PICKARD "Would you like to see bullfights from Mexico on local television?" This was the question asked about 2 years ago in this column and the response was younger brother of Cuban Premier Fidel Castro News I and an alumnus with Guevara of the "Sierra Commentary! Maestra" of Eastern Cuba that the older Castro launched the Guerrilla campaign that was Guevara was a Marxist theoretician as well as a guerrilla fighter, a professional (graduate doctor) and. a self-made economist.

However, he never practised his profession. Raul never got out of college and never held a job. Guevara gave orders all his life in a field of action ranging from street fighting in Buenos Aires in his teens in the days of dictator Juan D. Peron, through active participation in subversion in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala and eventually, Cuba. RAUL GOT USED to giving orders only after big brother made him chief of the armed forces Guevara was the military author of the victory of the Castro revolution in Cuba, though through bribery rather than field strategy.

Raul held a field command of relatively minor importance. In the ideological tussle dividing the international communist world, Guevara was pro-Moscow; Raul, pro-Peking. Guevara was calm and deliberate and ruled by his head. Raul is excitable, headstrong, ruthless and cold-blooded. 1 but they should be grateful they didn't have Raul at the helm of government.

Which is, perhaps, the best insight into Raul's nature. Actually, Raul and Guevara had a lot in common during the latter's lifetime. Guevara was a little older, 39, but both men were of slight build; Guevara five-feet-nine and Raul, five-feet-six. They enjoyed the same fierce basic hatred of Americans. Both were of Spanish descent, but Guevara with a touch of the Irish; both were from middle to well-to-do country families.

BOTH ARDENT, practising Communists, each married to equally ardent party members. Both men of physical courage. There the similarities end, however. Those writing in make the point that large numbers enjoy the corridas and have the right to see them on TV, while those opposed have the right to switch off their sets. Don Thomson, president of KPAZ-TV, states the position of the station simply in these words: "We are here to give people the programs they want." He welcomes all comments by phone or letter, but prefers written, signed opinions which are more valid in arriving at a station policy on the televising of bullfights.

overwhelming both in the number and the intensity of the replies. Hundreds of letters and cards poured in to The Arizona Republic for several eventually to overthrow Fulgencio Batista and set the pace for Communist subversion in the new world. Raul Castro is Cuba's armed forces minister and heir-designate to his brother's top job in the Cuban Communist hierarchy. Fidel himself told the world in the first few days of his regime that Raul would take over for him in the event of his death. PERHAPS SIGNIFICANTLY, when Fidel made the announcement he added that his enemies might think him bad, EVERYONE WHO calls is asked to give his name and address, for both sides of the controversy will be invited to a forum where the subject will be openly discussed.

Invitations to the forum will be sent persons picked at random from among those who have written in or given their names over the phone. Hopefully, said Thomson, the program will be videotaped and aired on a Sunday in the near future. No matter what the outcome of this discussion turns out to be, KPAZ-TV is a welcome addition to our viewing, especially for Mexiphiles, sports fans and language students. The "novelas" or Spanish-language soap operas are a rich slice of the mores, attitudes and spoken Spanish of modern Mexico. THEY HAVE ALREADY captured an enthusiastic audience among Spanish speakers and Spanish learners.

Indicative of this interest is the recent evening when the audio portion of the program was lost briefly. As Don Thomson put it, the switchboard lit up like a Christmas tree. Pickard we reported at that time they were about 2 to 1 against bullfighting. Most were well thought out or emotional comments for or against the "corrida" or running of the bulls, but a small pecentage heaped curses on the head of this writer and-wished him bodily harm for even bringing up the subject in print. Bullfights from Mexico and Spain have now become a reality in the Phoenix area with the inauguration of KPAZ-TV, UFH Channel 21.

As was expected, the flurry of calls and letters began immediately. Again a small percentage of the comments were rather shocking in their vehemence. One letter and one caller even accused the station of being run by Communists. FOR THE MOST part the response was a healthy example of that good American tradition of "speaking one's piece." However, a breakdown of the calls and letters shows an interesting development. Most of the telephone comments are against bullfighting.

On the other hand, the letters are more than 2 to 1 in favor of the programs. AND A joy to sports enthusiasts is the heavy schedule of boxing, football, hockey, golf, Jai alai and auto racing each Wiik i rti a js Summing up their first weeks on the air, Thomson said: pi I 'tx 1 I-, I A I "Wis fuv 7yd i a urn WJ "We still have to work out a few gremlins out of our sys tem, but in general the re 1 VAX I A I 111 I I sponse from the public has been excellent and most grati Stevens Mrs. Stevens Half Century Of Marriage fying.
