Somewhat startling, however, is the abrupt change in character of their playing for Schubert's Minor, "Death and the Maiden," Here the players advanced aggressively into Schubert's feverish essay with more than usual agitation. The serene floral moments were rapturously indulged, yet one thought the atmosphere menacingly alive with stinging, sharp discomforts. In Mozart, however, and in the formidable Tippett, with its inhospitable a Major key, a richly textured calmness prevailed amid excellent leadership under principal violinist Norbert Brainin's guidance. The players sat on small fragile-looking boxes the cellist on a piano bench and they are silvered-haired or balding, a mature, assuring contrast to the wave of youngish quartets prominently on tour. Warner refused to let Mervyn use Clark Gable in "Little Caesar," the film that immortalized Edward G. Robinson. But the Wamer-Leroy team had few other disagreements. Jack is said to be over the danger period.) Never have I heard of so many industry people staying away from parties on two successive nights Monday and Tuesday avoiding parties, much less to see a TV movie. At 74, Mervyn is one of the old Hollywood's prime image makers. Director Leroy noticed an actress named Sally Blane and renamed and remade her as Loretta Young.

He used Sophia Loren as an extra in "Quo "Mr. Lcroy," Sophia told him years later, "you are responsible for my film career." That, and more, comes clear in a jolly and anecdotal autobiography, "Mervyn Leroy: Take One," as told to columnist Dick Kleiner (Hawthorn; $10). Director Mark Lit has 'undertaken an ambitious project for the theater students' annual scholarship benefit production and some-limes it works and some-Mimes it doesn't.

The problem lies in the casting. Forrest Bachtell is a disappointing Tony. His acting is awkward and his movements clumsy. And his singing just doesn't sound like a Tony. This piece of miscasting throws the entire show off balance.

The 5-cent increase, effective Monday, is necessary because of skyrocketing costs associated with the production and distribution of the newspaper, Bauman said. Chita Rivera, but she is totally wasted in an inadequately staged "America" number. Lit also seems to be unsure of himself with the "Dance at the Gym," the show's big production num-' ber. It's over before it begins without really setting the stage for the entrance of Maria and Tony. But the "rumble" works very well, due in big part to Steidelc and Colosimo and their fight scene with the knives. The actors appear to gain confidence as the show gresses.

Where the chorus numbers were weak in the first act, second act numbers "I Feel Pretty," and "Gee, Officer Krupke," were minor triumphs. Greg Hubach's sets were very effective and Lit's use of the entire Lyceum provided for an overall effect of a much larger set. And of course everyone benefited from Gregg Tallman's musical direction and his players, Twit Clauter, Anne Detzner, Maida Richardson, Ron Schaer, Kent B. Van Cleaver and Julie Smith.
