Saints belt Broyles may lead uprising Phoenix, Sunday, July 18, 1971 The ArizonaRMrlic D-9 Hawaii Islanders nip Salt Lake, 6-5 over the Spokane Indians in the dramatic opener of a four game scries containing an important bearing on the Pacific Coast League's Northern Division pennant race. Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY The Hawaii Islanders jumped off to a 6-0 lead in the first five innings and then held off some late inning Salt Lake Angel rallies to come away with a fi-5 Pacific Coast League baseball victory. said Friday he thought major college football schools might have to pull out of the NCAA if scholarships are limited, put on a "need" basis, and coaching staffs are limited. Coach Charlie McClendon of Louisiana State told The Times Herald, "The Southeastern Conference is bitterly, bitterly opposed to the cutbacks, and Bob Devaney of Nebraska has told me the Big Eight voted unanimously to oppose it. It would be a big step withdrawal, but a lot of schools in our conference would be in favor of this.

We can at least use it as a threat." Associated Press DALLAS. Tex. Arkansas Coach Frank Broyles said yesterday the Southwest, Southeastern and Big Eight Conferences might leave the NCAA if drastic cutbacks in athletic expenditures are voted in by the organization at its January convention in Florida. Broyles told writer Bob Gait of the Dallas Times Herald 'We all think alike. We pretty much stick together on everything.

I've only talked to two or three people in each conference, but 1 have the feeling we'd all go out together." Texas Coach Darrell Royal 8 .1 I 110 000 0 0 1) 0 0 000 000 I 0 Tacomi Oliver Jackson box tomorrow Chuck Olivera, Arizona's state heavyweight champion, meets Walt (Razorbladcs) Jackson of Texas tomorrow in the ten-round main event at Riverside Ballroom. Jackson recently lost a split decision to Sonny Moore for the Texas heavyweight title. Three other bouts are also on tap, with Jesse Corrales of Phoenix clashing with Transi-to Allegria of Mexico in the eight-round welterweight sem-imain. Two four-rounders will see Mike Avans meeting Selestino Morales and Allen Hutchinson, Arizona's 1971 Golden Glove lightweight champ, making his pro debut against Nino Arrias of Mexico. First fight is 8:30 p.m.

Bluej ays SUN CITY Billie Harris pitched and batted the Sun City Saints past the Huntington Park Bluejays, 6-2 and 2-0 last night before 2,500 fans at Sun City Stadium dedication night. In the opener, Harris hurled a four-hitter and stroked two safeties. Ginger and Barbara Quijada knocked in one rbi apiece. Harris then came back in the nightcap to blank the Bluejays on a one-hitter, while hitting safely three times. Krutz helped the winners with 2 safeties.

Tonight the Saints face Huntington Park, 7:30 at Sun City Stadium, 11th Ave. and Grand. Another SEC voice, Alabama assistant athletic director Charlie Thornton, said, '1 think the time is ripe for the formation of a separate organization, away from the NCAA." If a proposal to limit scholarships, put scholarships on a "need" basis and limit the size of coaching staffs is put before the NCAA body in January, Broyles said the American Football Coaches Association will be an active body at the. convention. "The coaches association will be organized," said Broyles, a past president of the group.

"There'll be some work done before the convention. We'll know how much support we have." Broyles said some of the leaders in the AFCA already convention, which will be held in Hollywood, Fla. "We'll first try to gain enough strength to defeat the measure on the floor," he said. "If we see we can't, we'll have to be ready with as many major conferences, as possible, ready to withdraw and form our own organization." Royal expressed the thought there could be two sets of rules in the NCAA one for schools that want to continue big-time operations, another for the school that would like to reduce their programs. "That's a sound idea," said McClendon.

"Let's have a major college division and a college division. If a school doesn't want to compete on a major level, let it drop into the college rank." Hawaii Ml Sail Lake 000 ooo i 230 i 000 Scdrnti (71, EUiPT-n (I) and Rubles; Rodriguez. Colbom (W and Hiobs. Rodriguez (11-4). Stephenson (6-10).
