Bethany Home. Burial will be in Glendale Resthaven Park. Goren on Bridge by Charles H. Goren A spirited bidding contest landed North and South in a six spade contract which failed only because South did not take precautions in the play to guard against the unbalanced distribution which the auction had indicated were present, after the opponents competed all the way up to six hearts holding a distinct minority of the high cards. West's bid of six hearts was an obvious sacrifice and North's decision to pass was a two way call.

Normally, when both players have bid strongly and the opponents persist to a higher level, the pass is a strength showing call and indicates a willingness to go on, but leaves the final decision to partner. In the present case, North's values were primarily distributional and he wasn't sure to whose hand it was. While South could have doubled himself, he decided to forgo a smaller profit in favor of trying for six spades which appeared to be a reasonable shot. West opened the six of hearts and East put up the king, which was topped by ducks South's ace. Success or failure on the hand appeared to hinge on the location of the king of spades and, holding 10 cards in the suit, the odds favored taking a finesse.

Before testing the lie in trumps, South decided to lead his singleton diamond first. The ten was played from dummy and East was in with the ace. The deuce of clubs was returned, declarer put up the ace and continued with a small club, ruffing with North's nine. To his surprise, East overruffed with the king and though declarer had no problem in drawing the remaining trumps and discarding his losing clubs on the established diamonds, his contract had been set down by one trick. Had West somehow put his hand on a small diamond as the opening lead, enabling his partner to get the ace of diamonds out of the way immediately, a shift to either II veteran.

NORTH 409632 9 8 0 KQJ1075 49 WEST EAST A Void 4 K75 0 009762 0 KJ10543 0843 0 A96 42 SOUTH A A 1084 9 A 02 The bidding: South West North East Pass 10 19 4 9 59 6 9 Pass Pass Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: Six of 9 a club or a heart would have assured South's defeat, for the latter has no way of reaching dummy to take the spade finesse. However, such a course of events might have appeared to declarer as either the result of black magic or a wellcalculated peek.

With the normal heart lead, South can ward off any evil spirits by simply cashing the ace of clubs first before leading the singleton diamond. Now, when East is in with the ace of diamonds, he is unable to exit without placing his opponent in the dummy. A diamond return provides direct access, as does a heart, for South can sluff a club while he ruffs in the North hand. A spade return by East gives declarer a free finesse in the suit and after the king responds favor ably and trumps are drawn in three rounds, a club ruff puts North back in to run the diamonds for whatever discards are still required. Observe, that if East did have a second club to lead, that exit would also provide South with access to dummy.

Cashing the ace of clubs at trick two could lose only if East were void in the suit which was much less of a likelihood than his holding a singleton, ALMERIDA, Edward. Funeral Center. BARRON. Clifford Craig. Services today 2 p.m.
