Doily Gazette, Tuesday, May 10, 1966 Kell Wins Divisional Competition TED KELL Ted Kell, minister of the Church of Christ, 1344 S. Oakhill took another step Sunday toward the Toastmasters Club world finals in San Diego, Calif. Kell won the divisional competition in Stevens Point with his speech and next month moves on to regional competition in Milwaukee. That event is June 18. He gave it again last night for the benefit of members of the Janesville Toastmasters Club who could not attend the weekend contest. Children of Toastmasters were guests of the club at dinner in the Alpine Restaurant last night. Dick Kretschman gave the wining talk and other speakers were Dick Hopper, Dale Dopkins, Floyd Niedfeldt, Maurice Peterson, Walt Brueggemann, John Lasse and Dick Wiese. Say Successor to Willis Picked CHICAGO (AP) Unconfirmed reports intensified today that the superintendent of schools of Syosset, N.Y., would be named to head Chicago's school system. The reports were that Dr. James F. Redmond, 59, superintendent of schools in the Nassau County suburb of New York City, would be named to succeed Benjamin C. Willis as Chicago's schools superintendent.

President Frank M. Whiston of the Chicago Board of Education scheduled a news conference, presumably concerning post. But even during the speculative period, a "Stop Redmond" campaign was developing. The Kilbourn Organization, a Southwest Side community group, met Monday night to discuss ways of preventing the appointment of Redmond. At $48,500 a year, Willis is one of the highest paid public officials in the country.

Willis, 64, has pledged to retire on his birthday Dec. 23. He has been the center of a persistent integration controversy for the last few years. The Chicago superintendent oversees more than 500,000 pupils and 21,000 teachers in an area sprawled over 224 square miles. Sssh, Birch Society Is the Red' BELMONT, Mass.

(AP) Robert Welch, founder of the ultraconservative John Birch Society, says the society won't cut back its program although it is operating in the red. He acknowledged in a bulletin to members Monday that the society's income totaled slightly more than $4 million last year, one million less than its expenditures. He also said that membership had not grown to anticipated levels. But, Welch said, the society "has firmly decided against cutting back at all." The society, which says its primary aim is to combat communism, has come under heavy attack in recent years from members of both major political parties. Met Spared Wrecking Ball NEW YORK (AP) The old Metropolitan Opera House was spared the wrecker's ball undramatically. "No permit has been granted and none has been applied for," said Charles G. Moerdler, city buildings commissioner. It had been announced that demolition would start at 10 a.m.

to make way for an office building. Moerdler said no wrecking permit woutd be issued without careful scrutiny. He said he would consider reports that the state legislature plans to order a reprieve of several months to give a "Save the Met" campaign a chance to raise $8 million. That amount, four times what it cost to build the Opera "House in 1883, is what the opera company says it's worth now. But the opera company would prefer to rent the site near Times Square for $200,000 a year to a firm which plans to demolish the opera house and erect an office building.

The opera company will open next season in. a new $45-million theater in Lincoln Center. The "Save the Met" committee hopes to persuade the city to condemn the old building and turn it over to a nonprofit corporation, which would need another $8 million to rehabilitate it.
