10 p.m. Deckers vsltheir families by surprise andjWeru 2. Muiim. Fred MendeU Bobo Newsom probably has written finish to a long and eventful baseball career. Ol' Bobo, as he effectionately calls himself, refused to board a train with the Chattanooga Lookouts Thursday, after saying "There is no future in minor league baseball for me." He had been playing with the Southern association team.

President Joe Engle, of the Chattanooga club immediately warned Newsom that he faces suspension for the rest of the season and a fine. Newsom tried out with the Washington Senators this spring, but the old master of the "blooper ball" failed to catch on. In years past he's been on more major league mound staffs than any other Newsom playing both in the American and National circuit. He belonged not to a club, a league or a farm just to baseball. Apparently though, Bobo has set his foot down.

He bummed around from one major league club, to another for many years, with Chattanooga as long as there appeared he might have one more shot in the majors, and then cut himself adrift. What he may do now, only Bobo knows. It's another lesson for young ball players. Baseball is a grand profession, but one in which offers little old age security. It's a good idea to prepare for another job even while you're developing youthful skill, speed and a batting eye.

The young ball player who studies his baseball lessons and takes the game seriously can move up the ladder in big strides if luck comes his way. Only a year ago Del Crandall was giving Hutchinson Cub hurlers a bad time in games at Carey park. He jumped to Evansville, a Class Brave farm at the start of this year, and a few days ago was called on to Boston, where in short order he was seeing action for the Big Braves. He's a red-haired 19 year old from Fullerton, Calif, and likely will be Boston's No. 1 backstop next year.

Wilbur C. Goodman, Kinsley, reports a movement underway to start a good Softball program in Kinsley. "One thing that puzzles us," he said, "is what is being done to slow the pitching speed. I know the rule was changed but are they having much luck in enforcing it? "At Hays college one summer, in order to reduce the advantage of a team with a top grade pitcher, the rule was made that each team had to use a different pitcher every three outs This proved to be a lot of fun, and surprising as it may seem the number of runs per game was, on the average, only two more than the previous year." The obliges the pitcher to pose on the rubber with feet together and the ball touching both hands in front of him before starting a "horseshoe pitching" had only slight effect on game scores. In fast competition, softball scores still run uniformly low.

One effect, however, has been to eliminate the "side arm" delivery, which to all intents and purposes was a baseball submarine throw. Actually pitchers who conformed to the written rules in earlier years have merely been obliged to come to a "pose" before firing. They're just as fast as they ever were. of the doldrums. Dick Pahmahmie, who replaced Alex Grieves on the mound for Topeka in the ninth, fanned three batters to end the game.

Both Grieves and Ralph Rosengarten, Leavenworth hurler, pitched six- hit ball the first eight innings. Topeka 000 000 11 1 Leavenworth 200 100 6 1 Grieves, Pahmahmie (9-won) I loser eliminated).
