I think "Harry and Tonto" is a good movie and Art Carney is excellent. The most wonderful memento one takes away from the charmingly sophisticated and sagacious wise tale of an old man's cross 23'swivel base consolette at the price or $EQQ95 iLI I under the influence, his cellmate is an Indian medicine man (well done by Chief Dan George), busted for practicing without a license. Harry tells him about his cat, Tonto, who's named after The Lone Ranger's red-skinned aide. "Who's The Lone Ranger?" deadpans the Chief, who says he never had a radio but owns a TV. It is one of several laugh-provokers in this episode. The supporting cast is studded with delightful cameos.

They range from Herbert Berghof's park bench socialist to Ellen Bur-styn's oft-wed daughter (who provides the reason for Harry's Chicago sojourn). Zero Mostel's son, Josh, remembered as Herod in "Jesus Christ Superstar," is good as Harry's grandson who sheds a Zen-macrobiotics-silence vow existence to head to a Colorado commune (from the scene lensed in Sedona) with a 15-year-old runaway to whom Harry gives a ride on the way to Chicago. The latter seems to be spontaneously episodic as Harry encounters assorted characters on his journey across the United States after leaving New York. But it tends to get a mite draggy in the last half-hour of the film.

Not enough, though, for critical nitpicking. Producer director co-writer Paul Mazursky is to be commended for this wonderful portrait because too few movies deal with the elderly and contain the wit and originality as does this one. Which leads to the regrettable fact that an unnecessary scene (though funny and enjoyable and not really improper), when hitchhiking Hary's given a lift to Las Vegas by a horny hooker, and a four-letter expletive uttered by Harry's grandson in a fun context, give this film a very unfair R-rating. Young folks should see it If only to better understand oldsters and to understand through the young adults In the movie that it is more than possible to communicate on an equal and wide scale with senior citizenry. There's a moving segment when Harry finds his semi-senile first love (a marvelous cameo by Geraldine Fitzgerald) in an Indiana rest home.
