gentlemen of this city who spent a portion of last week at the Oakland enjoying the fishing had a startling experience last Thursday night of the dangers attending an excursion In email boats In strange waters The Prt consisting of four ladies an equal number of gentlemen and one child with a punter in each of the three boat that had been engaged left the Oakland in tbe afternoon and beaded toward Lake St Clair Instead of keeping the busts in the main channel the punters pulled down whst li known as the lost channel ami immediately lost their bearings To make matter worse it began to rain and as a matter of course the occupants of the boats were thoroughly drenched having no protcc I After several hours hard pulling in tbe darkness the punters sighted a light some dis tance away and when they came up with it found it to be that of Harris Newberry's hunting boat the Vinetta on board of which ere Henry Hart of this city and a number of friends who had chartered the craft ror a duck hunting expedition The members ot tbe party were anxious to return to the Oakland as soon as possible that they might quiet the fears of their friends there and receiv ing directions from Mr Hart as to the proper course to lake the party started on the return trip and finally reached the club bouse all thoroughly fatigued and nearly famished from exposure The steward of the club Mr bitney exerted himself to make the party comfortable and although it was late In the eietilng went to the trouble to serve a bounti ful supper Word was sent to the Star Island tiiue where the steam yacht May wa en Baged to convey the party to tbe Oakland Not withstanding the discomforts of the trip the ieulers ot the party consider they were exceed ingly lucky in having made the trip across Lake Clair in solely as the rain shower was ac co'iipauied by a brisk ind which in tbedark ih mi made the passage of the frail and heavilv iadened boats dangerous even Inthahmu experienced lake navigators Bei'e of September 3 Speeiakl The Beatin and Kinslow matter In hich Detroit and Cincinnati are directly interested has as sumed serious proportions and a special meet ing of the Arbitration Committee baa been called to meet in Philadelphia next Tuesday to consider this subject Young Kog er and Day are the league representa tive this committee While the Chicago were in this city Anson stated emphatically that he had never staled that he intended to protest the Detroit games in which Bealln pitched It is fair to presume that the league will stand up for its President and confirm his decisions that the two players properly belong to Detroit on the strength of the Allentown i management and the tv players telegraphing Mr SMearus their acceptance of the terms Le offered them prior to the negotiations with the Cincinnati President received to day a telegram from Capt Ansoa announcing the signing of Bob Pettitt Wllkesl arre's craek third baseman by the Chicago Club Burns has for tone tin past been considered the weak spot of the Chi cago Club und Pettltt is said to be a first class fielder as well as a good batter aua base run ner arrell and Daely were each given an oppor tunity to display their ability ss field captain for the homo team but as neither of them seemed to take the required amount of interest in the welfare of the club they were deposed and Donnelly the hard wor'ing little third baseman is captaining the feenalors He celebrated bls promotion by playing a perfect fielding game to day which helped materially to win the only victory of the series just closed with the Pittsburgh The poor showing ot the home club during the week has put an end to all talk about buving out President Hewitt's Interest the Wash ington club 1 heir work against the Pitts Lurghs during tLe series which c'o ed this af ternoon has been exasperating to their friends and admirers and has had an lnuriou effect upon the receipts Cliff Carroll has been laid off and Schock has been given a chance in the field While the latter may not be as good a Sia er as Carroll he works harder and proves ims elf equally as valuable Washingtonians have given up all hopes of seeing their club end better than seventh and there are a few low spirited citizens who predicted that Indianapolis will beat them out finally President Hewitt to night is in favor of the league returning to the percentage system but there is no certainty that he will be among its advocates at the next meetingot tbe league He says the Washington Club would have fared much better this year from a financial stand point had the percenta7e system been in opera tion in New York Boston and Cbicaco't hey have drawn almost as well as any other clu fn the league Of course within the past month they have not been as attractive asjn the earlier part ot tbe season but under all he circum stances ha thinks his lub treasury wo ild now be in better condition bad the percentage sys tem prevailed Standing ef the Ohio Percentage and a Strong Clnb INDIANAPOLIS September 3 Special President Brush is In New York on mercantile business While East he has incidentally given some attention to base ball matters and he writes that there will be no opposition to the re tention of Indianapolis in the league next year On the strength of these assurances the direc tors will at once take steps to improve Athletic Park and make it second to none in the country The grand stand will bo moved to the south west corner of the grounds and enlarged Up holstered chairs will be purchased and arrange ments made for better street car facilities It is proposed to spend $19000 in such improve ments The present season has proved conclus ively that Indianapolis will support a league club The average attendance has been 2U01I and on thefew occasions when the Hoosiers have struck a winning gait the patronage immediately Increased to 3000 and 3300 On holidays the accommodations have not been sufficient for tbe crowds Despite the poor work of the clnb there wlllibe a good balance at thdcloso of the season President Brush is an earnest advocate of the percentage system which lie believes ths league must sooner or later adopt He says that Indianapolis now has the nucleus of a pennant winning team and that by a generous expendi ture of money the management propostia next year to have a club that will be one of the finest drawing cards in the league It has been determined to secure the best of players how ever great the cost and while the Hoosiers do not boast ot capturing the championship they confidently expect to stand near the head it Is the firm belief of President Brush 1 hat the season of 1888 will find the percentage system in vogue in both the league and association ive successive defeats have been sustained the past eek ehleliy on account of a lack of pitching material One game would have been taken from the iiants but for tho bad umpiring of Brady The fielding has been first class but in pitching and batting they have done miserably 'they averaged six actual hit to a game during their present trip McGeach reported for duty at Boston and the club lias now a surplus of outfielders in Seery Brown McGeachy Johnson and Gardner Tbe last named was obtained' while he was en route from Haverhill Mass to Washington to join the Senators Johnson will likely be sold Shorn first base play is wretched but as he leads the club in batting he cannot well be spared KeaelVg Poor Arguments Against Percent age Philadklph tA September The percentage plan now the uppermost topic among the offi cials here finds no favor among the magnates of the Philadelphia Club Speaking of the arrange ment to The ree Press correspondent to day Al Reach President of the Philadelphia Club said: "I think that the game demands it The American Association has no use for per centage and you know the club there have been run successfully for eats I think how ever that it would bo an advantage to clubs in smaller cities but it would certainly be a posi tive detriment to clubs in larger cities if a guar antee was made large enough I would approve of the percentage plan that would insure us what we fail to receive now when we go not the present system nnjust to the clubs that prove to be the most This was asked of Mr Heach 1 think so will take the De troit Club for Instance They prove to he one of our greatest attractions but then 1f the De troit Club was not the leader in the champion ship race they would net prove so attractive Next year it may be different Detroit may not be on top and then the interest to see them play would not be so great Why for years the De troit Club came to Philadelphia and thev never did prove a drawing card I want to impress upon your mind one thing If Detroit had not succeeded in getting some of her Lig men Phil adelphia would have gotten at least two of them and then the Philadelphia Club would have probably proved a much greater attraction than at present No the percentage system ill not Le adopted if New York Washington Boston and i hiiadel phia maintain eir present attitude in regard to it and 1 am pretty certain that they will It takes a three fourtha vote or six clubs to make tne '1 he Phillies leave to night on their last tour of the season if they are as successful as upon their lat tour the club wiil be atNew York sure for thrd place and it is quite likely that Chi cago will have to go back too Second place would look just too sweet for anything to the Quaker City public The Chicaqos seemed to be all broken up to day Baldwin
