A PRGPER1Y bOSS $IOOCOO ONE HUNDRED AND ITY MEN O'JT EMPLOYMENT The Detroit Pipe oundry Works on Clark avenue near the Aiiehigan Car Works were completely destroyed by fire yesterday morning Night Watchman Nicholas Alooro was making his rounds of the works about 4:20 when he discovered a fire in the roof of the room in which the cores were dried The flames had gained considerable headway before they were discovered Moore called to rank Small and Iouis Alenzenfela two other watchmen and while they got the hose which is kept in the building ready for use Aloore turned in an alarm The watchmen soon had a stream of water playing on the building and the ire De partment responded promptly but their united efforts failed to check the fire which had spread to the building and was rapidly enveloping the whole chain of struc tures owned by the Pipe oundry Company The firemen soon saw that their etierts to save the works would be fruitless and they turned their attention to surrounding property There was a strong wind blowing that fanned the lire into a roaring blaze and tne sparks were taken up by the wind and carried almost to the Michi gan Car Works Cinders and sparks flew thick and fast upon the car works lumber piles cars and a num her of smaller buildings in the neigh borhood ot the burning structure and the fire men directed their efforts to saving them In this they were successful The fire was confined to the two and one hall acres ot buildings and sheds owned by the foundry company innum erable small fires started and at one time it looked as if would be impossible to save the Aiiehigan Car Works In about an hour after the fire was discovered the pipe foundry build ings were in ruins with nothing but a tali chimney a blackened mass nt wood piles of brick and bent and twisted machinery to mark the spot where they stood The origin ot the lire is not known The work of the watchmen was so arranged that every part of the buildings was visited by one ot the men every fifteen minutes Electrical buttons were placed in every quarter of the structures and it was the duty of the watchmen at slated intervals to touch the buttons when the exact time ot their report was registered in the office The office register show ed that the building in which the fire was di coveied was visited five minutes before Air Aloore saw the flames Hugh AicMilian Vice President and manager of tlie Pipe oundry Company estimates tlie loss at $10tU0o The insurance is This includes the buildings machinery patterns and everything used in and aboutthe build tigs The risks were placed by Davenport insurance agent at CO East Congress street Policies are held in ten diftereiit companies each company carrying $2000 The companies are: New York Alliance National Niagara Howard Rhode Island Scottish Peoples' Pennsylvania Union and Norwich Union The Detroit Pipe oundry Company is a new organization having been in existence but little over a year It was organized by James Mc Millan President Hugh AicMilian Vice Presi dent and General Alanager AIcAIilian Secretary and II Whiting Superintendent who are the stockholders The main buildings were completed in December last when the company commenced work with seventy five men tho first job being tho filling of a large contract for the city water works Tho foundry was the only one of its kind west and north of Cleveland and business increased faster than the projectors anticipated During the past fall tho capacity of the works was doubled and fully 150 men are thrown out of employ ment by the fire The directors of the company have not fully decided what they will co A meeting will be held this morning when the question will be settled Hugh Alc Alillan said to a 1'ttEK Pheas reporter last night that in all probability the works would be rebuilt once on the old site but that it would bo impossible to have them in op eration before spring Supt Whiting is exert ing himself to find places for tho men who are thrown out of employment but as most ot the foundries in tlie city are supplied with nil the help they need it is thought that a large propor tion ot' the pipe foundry men will have to look for work in other cities A Naval Sudilcn Demise On Wednesday lost Second Lieut Graham of the revenue cutter essenden was taken to the Alarine Hospital for treatment Ro was not considered seriously ill but
