Only a few of these honors were being named Man of the Year in Arizona Agriculture, receiving the University of Arizona's Award of Merit, and appointment by President Kennedy to the Packers and Stockyards Committee in 1963. But of all the honors bestowed upon him, and of all the worthwhile programs to which he has lent support, Cowden is most proud and has received greatest satisfaction from his efforts on behalf of the Desert Mission and the John C. Lincoln Hospital. COWDEN DISMISSES the significance of his personal efforts toward the hospital's development. But he is lavish in his praise for those officers and board members serving with him.

THE MAN WHO HAS SERVED both the Desert Mission and John Lincoln Hospital as president for 17 and 14 years, respectively, and who has guided the hospital through its greatest period of growth is an unassuming businessman named E. Ray Cowden. Cowden's credo might be a paraphrasing of a remark attributed to Teddy Roosevelt: "Speak softly but carry a big load." In his personal business, and in his contributions of time and money to civic pi-ojects, Cowden has done just that HE IS A SOFT-SPOKEN rancher and farmer who has a firm handshake and a firm belief that those who attain success in a community are indebted to plow back into that community a large measure of work toward dvic betterment. Not easily excitable, Cowden will, however, speak out forcefully on issues in which he believes. He backs up his words with actions, as has been demonstrated many times.

A native of Missouri, Cowden came to Arizona at 21 in 1912. He immediately launched a career as a cattleman, first in Cochise County and later on big spreads in Yavapai County near Seligman. He also has farming and feed lot operations at Tolleson. A LIST OF HIS accomplishments, offices held, honors received, and services rendered would fill several pages. Congratulations John C.

Lincoln Hospital JHE PHYSICAL STRUCTURE of the new John C. Lincoln Hospital took 75 building trades craftsmen 18 months to erect at a cost of approximately $2.3 million. An additional $500,000 was spent for equipment and furnishings. Thirty-five sub-contractors performed their specialties toward building the hospital under the direction of the general contractor, Robert E. McKee, Inc.

Expenditures for concrete work and air conditioning alone totaled $760,000. Architects Varney, Sexton, Sydnor Associates, aware of the therapeutic effect of a light and cheerful hospital room, designed the structure with 270 windows. Each room has two precast concrete window frames weighing four and one-half tons each. They were hoisted into place by giant cranes. Twelve-thousand tons of reinforced slabs and a million pounds of reinforcing steel also went into the structure.

It has more than 400 doors, and lighting is provided by 3,000 fluorescent tubes. One of the first pleasant surprises for visitors will be the discovery that the hospital has adequate vehicle parking. There are 350 parking stalls for automobiles, and the hospital owns adjacent land on which an additional 100 autos can be accommodated WE ARE PROUD to have been the PAINTING CONTRACTOR on the JOHN LINCOLN HOSPITAL Congratulations to the John C.
